So I'm using Wargame-Model-Mods Industrial terrain using Pringles Cans which I designed. I've had a cheap airbrush kit since Christmas and I have not had the time or the place to use it until now. I don't think it cost my wife more than £60.00 for the kit. No flaming about my equipment please I wanted something inexpensive incase I don't enjoy using an airbrush. So far I'm enjoying it although the compressor overheats in about 40 minutes or so. The gun feels good in the hand and the dual action gives a lot of control (or will once I've gotten to grips with it). I still have my Mega Paint Kit from Citadel that I got back in 2009 so I mixed that up 1:1 with airbrush paint thinner. A few times I added distilled water into the paint holder attached to the gun to thin it down a bit more.
I got a bit close with the yellow on one of the tanks but I'm not too worried. This is why I'm practicing on terrain first. This was only my first coat and I still have a few more coats to go yet.

Nice looking terrain. Are the small fuel tanks, just the smaller pringle pots? They'd look great on my Necromunda table.
What are they topped with?

Wow dude really cool!
What kind of airbrush paint are you using that requires paint thinner? is it oil base?
You sure eat a lot of Pringles

Yes the small tanks are the Pringles Snack Size. All the walkways are 2mm laser cut MDF

I actually answered this in the first thread. All the paint is Citadel Paint. All paint for an airbrush must be the consistency of milk so paint thinner is needed so the gun can spray the paint in thin even coats. I did the mix as 1:1 paint/thinner. I am a bit sick of Pringles right now, but I have four children who helped out!

They look pretty good for your first try with an airbrush. Like you, I have a very cheap airbrush that I only use for basecoating. Frankly, the only thing I would do to that terrain at this point would be drybrushing all the MDF bits with either a medium gray or metallic and call it a done deal. My favorite one is the red tank. The problem with the pringle cans (and any card tube) are the spiral seams, and the addition of the card panels does a good job of hiding those.
As for the sloppy yellow, I think you would have been better off spraying a darker color in the seams first rather than a lighter color afterwards. Airbrushers call this pre-shading, and it's a really effective way to add contrast. Prime, hit the recessed areas with a brown color, overspray with red, taking care to not blast the panel lines with color, then go back in with a.light drybrush to bring out the panel edges.
Did the Tamiya thinner give you any problems using Citadel paints?

Still need work on control and most importantly adjusting the flow. That was a big issue today. Dry brushing is next and then I'll call it good.

Ya I get that you need to thin the paint down but Citadel isn't oil based... you can just use water?

Thinners or water will be fine. It doesn't have to be oil paint to use thinners. There are thinners made specifically for acrylic colors. Personally use 1:9 flow aid/distilled water most of the time, and Vallejo thinners on occasion. Cant say i really have a preference. They both do the job well enough for me. But, when i run out of my large bottle of thinners I doubt I will buy another.

Working on another Fuel tank. However I ran out of Grey Primer halfway through. Also shown are my Tau Barricades.
