Subject: Ogres or Dark Elves safer option?

I am keen to start fantasy and like both these armies. I was wondering which one would be the safest bet with the rumoured changes? I figure that there will always be elves in fantasy whereas ogre not so much. On the other hand the ogre models are somewhat more generic and so may be able to adapt to changes in the rules (I.e. Witch elves being so distinctive, really need to have their own special rules to work well on the table, otherwise they would look strange being generic soldiers).
What are people's thoughts? How confident would you be that either faction will exist in some playable form come 9th? Spoke to the manager at the local GW who made the point that from a financial perspective squatting a faction involves a massive write off on the molds etc, arguing that this was highly unlikely.

1.) Don't trust anything your local GW manager says, they don't know gak until about a week before we do.
2.) I'd say just get generic elf warriors or ogres atm, nothing special though the best bet would be to just sit on your money & wait.

Or buy what you want. There will always be people who will still play 8th edition.

Longer than that, if it's something as large as the squatting of entire ranges, actually.

OR you could ignore the crap that gets spewed on forums like this. Why so many people bought so heavily into the idea of "Fantasy Skirmish" and "Bubbleverse", I have no idea.

Some of the more reliable rumour guys have been saying things as well. I'm a cautious person & in the face of an uncertain market the better move at this point would be to take that money, toss it into your savings account, make a couple cents / dollars interest and just wait.
Look at it this way, what do you lose by waiting? 2 months time until the alleged July 11th drop? In that time you can buy generic elf warriors / ogres to build & paint. Where as if some of the rumours ARE true and you go out & buy 40 witch elves you're now out $240+. I'm not saying abandon ship, I'm not saying don't buy, I'm saying buy cautiously.

Thanks for all your advice, particularly about buying wisely. I am leaning towards ogres on the basis of the battalion box being versatile and so provided I don't fully assembly the models I will have something to play with. My only concern then is that monstrous infantry/cavalry gets nerd fed which would ruin ogres relative to most other armies.

If you're considering starting Dark Elves, the War Host of Naggaroth is a good box as well. You basically get the Cold One Chariot/Scourgerunner Chariot for free.

people said that when 8th hit as well, doesn't mean I can find a game of it. Kings of War exists through so the models wouldn't be completely useless if squatted.
The rumours seemed to say elves become one faction while ogres are stripped down to a side choice of the Empire. That makes me think dark elves are the best choice as 'elf spearmen' can be high/wood/dark and still be an elf spearman. Ogres however might be reduced to 'ogre unit' as a empire special choice.

The problem with the 'vote with your dollar' response is that it doesn't take into account why we're not buying the product. I want to enjoy 40k enough to buy back in. It was my introduction to traditional games, and there was a time when I enjoyed it very much. I want to buy 40k, but Gamesworkshop is doing their very best to push me away, and simply not buying their product won't tell them that. |
