If my opponent has a unit of 5 guys sitting on ruins. 3 of them on the top level and 2 on the level beneath direct

If i place a blast or template over the guys on the top level does it damage everyone in the unit including the guys on the level beneath?

So 5 hits or is it 3 hits only?

I recall seeing an example image of this stuff before but not sure if it was 6th edition or what. I cant seem to find anything in the rulebook addressing this matter. If you guys could also provide me the page number or location of this ruling that would be greatly appreciated!

6th edition had a picture. That was dropped from 7th.

The best RAW argument is generally that they hit ever model under the template on every level.

However, many tournaments have ruled it differently in an effort to buff gunline units like broadsides.

The current edition lets blast markers hit every model under them.

The part where it says "all models under the marker are hit" or words to that effect.

There isn't really anything in the rulebook that says that is how it works. The ruling is extrapolated from the normal blast and template rules which only says "all models under the template are hit". Since there is no longer any exceptions given (such as with ruins in previous editions) the above is all there is for RAW.

Since they removed levels for ruins, there no longer is anything like hitting a certain level.

We just houseruled the ruins to be like the 6th edition rules. Much easier.

Special Rules: Blast
Once the final position of the blast marker has been determined, take a good look at it from above – each unit suffers one hit for each of their models which is fully or partially beneath the blast marker, even if those models are not within the firer’s line of sight.

The underlined above means "all models".

There are no exceptions to this rule, so why would some models be excluded from being "fully or partially beneath"?
