so I am starting nids...
here's the list tell me what you think

hive tyrant wings old adversary

30 hormagaunts nothing special

2 squads of lictors pheromone trail

tervigon regeneration

squad of raveners with rendring claws

now this is the part where im not sure I want to take a trigon and mawclow with a carnifex or should I take toxicrine and 2 carnifexs what do you think?

or change by list compeletly if you want and give me some of your owns !

Well a few things to consider...Synapse, you need plenty, it's almost impossible to have too much. So Warriors, Zoeys, and or Malanthropes are good things to consider.

Winged Tyrants, they are overwhelmingly the best unit, so you should take as many as you can.(more or less ) so I suggest a second one, and a third would not be a bad choice.

If you want to run a Tervigon, I suggest you take x30 Termagants, so you can take it as a Troops choice, that opens room for a second Tyrant.

The Heavy slots are star performers for us Nids, so most anything is a good unit. I personally really like Mawlocs, but some folks find them unreliable. Carnifexen with twin Brain Leeches are always a good choice.

I personally like Toxicrene, but it has not really "proven" itself yet.


I've posted a bunch of lists over the years, so you can take a look if you want some ideas.

Here is a basic "template" modify to taste.


HQ: Winged Dakka'rant, Thorax hive: Electro grubs 240
HQ: as above

Elite: Zoanthrope Brood, x1 50
Elite: Venothrope Brood, x1 45
Elite: Veno, as above, or a second Zoey, or a Malanthrope.

Troops: Warrior Brood, x3, Cannon (Strangle) 100
Troops: Termagant Brood, x30 120
Troops: Tervigon, Thorax hive(Electro) 205
Troops: Hormagaunt Brood, x15 75
Troops: can add more Hormagaunts as above, or Rippers with Tunneling, or save points and take 4 slots.

Heavy: Tyrannofex, Acid spray, Thorax Hive (Electro) 185, 200 with Adrenal
Heavy: Twin Mawlocs, 280

Lots of ways to customize, plenty of synergy, a fearsome array of OS Troops. I always take Hive Commander so I can Outflank the Tervigon (one Troop) If you use Dakkafexen, or a Toxicrene a Pod is a good idea (one or two)

Quick note, Malenthropes are HQs, not Elites.

Other than that, I agree with pretty much everything pinecone said. Synapse, force multipliers, and some heavies. I personally love using Tyrannofexes. 2+ armor and S10 shots ensure that your opponent is going to be worried. It's a perfect way to anchor your center line. It will force your opponent to either spend an entire turn or 2 to kill it or ignore it and deal with the consequences of S10 shots and a possible turn 2 assault.

The most important advice I can give to new nid players is this: quantity over quality. We are not eldar. We do not have the best units on the field (barring the flyrant). What nid commanders have are tons and tons of expendable troops and MCs. Drown your opponents in bodies!

Sure. Here's a list I run for semi-competitive games, my walking swarm list.

This list gives you a ton of options. You have 9 objective secured troops, 6 of which can respawn on a 4+. You've got some heavy artillery with the biovores and tyrannofexes. The tyrannofexes will provide anchors to hold your line, along with the tyrant and tyrant guard. Warriors provide synapse (as does the tyrant) and the venoms provide cover. Your opponent will have to make the tough choice of what to shoot: shoot the big MCs, which have good armor saves and 3+ cover saves at worst (due to intervening models), or try to clear away the screening troops which have at worst a 5+ cover save as well. Either way, you should outnumber your opponent with 140 models on the board and the durability to make it across in two turns with the majority still alive.

Admittedly, this is a lot of models. It's probably not a starting list, as most new nid players will not have 130 troops. I's just crazy because I like having enough models to run every kind of formation and maxed out CAD.
But it's just an idea of a swarm option. Another way to go would be to drop the endless swarm and go for a double CAD to get 6 heavies. Throw in some carnifexes or trygons or mawlocks. Nid players have a ton of options to play with. You just have to find what works for you.
