After 9th edition comes around and they release new books/stop making certain kits/etc., will the discontinued stuff be cheaper or more expensive secondhand? I'm asking because it seems kinda unpredictable. Some GW stuff from editions ago is incredibly cheap on sites like ebay and amazon (like old 40k books), while other stuff gets snatched up by the collectors and is really hard to find.

So like let's say I wanted to buy some of the army books for my collection. Would it be a better idea to get it now from GW, or wait until 9th and try to get it second hand for cheaper?

Or how about the Bretonnia line? Let's say GW drops Bretonnia in 9th: would people start selling their Breton armies for cheap all over the place, or will they start hoarding them and buying them up because they aren't officially available anymore, so are 'collectors items'?

Bretonnia already is one of the cheapest armies. There's no demand for it and you can easily use any historical line to fill in models.

When an edition changes, books get cheaper. Badly painted plastic models are usually cheap too.

Anything OOP and BNIB goes up in value and becomes more expensive. Metal and painted also becomes more expensive (as it can be stripped easily)

Bye bye Dakkadakka, happy hobbying! I really enjoyed my time on here. Opinions were always my own :-)

Not always. If the new sculpt is better then the OOP one might drop. Or if the new sculpt is cheaper because ti went from metal to plastic.

Look at the OOP dark riders. They're worth dirt right now, the new ones are better looking and cheaper.

Trade rules: lower rep trades ships 1st. - I ship within 2 business days, if it will be longer I will contact you & explain. - I will NOT lie on customs forms, it's a felony, do not ask me to mark sales as "gifts". Free shipping applies to contiguous US states.

Good point. I sort of meant from the perspective of lines getting dropped. But if they get replaced by nicer models you're right. :-)

Yeah, I think a lot of it has to do with the 'desirability' of the fig in question.

When the current line of Skaven was released, the previous versions dropped like a rock. I scooped up hordes of skaven clanrats (the old style ones) for less than $100. I've been slowly replacing those with the newer figs (I -love- the newer versions). But I think this is an example of what you guys are talking about - newer models that look nicer, make the old ones pretty cheap!

The books for sure drop too. I don't recall an older edition book/codex/army book going up in price when the newer edition one comes out.

And some things just drop in price because of sheer quantity. I think half the world's plastic is used for 40K Space Marines, and as such, you can usually find them pretty darn cheap on ebay.

Once the newer books start replace the existing ones, the older books will drop in price if you don't mind buying used on eBay or at places like Half Price books.

Bare in mind that a lot of the older models and some of the old books have increased in value due to their age and limited availability.

Personally, I don't think 8th edition stuff will fall in price very quickly even after 9th comes out. I don't have any real reason to back that up, except I think that a lot of players (Myself included) have really enjoyed 8th edition and I'm not ready to watch my armies lose their identity and get combined into another faction. However, I'm completely prepared to play any of my armies in 5th, 6th, 7th, or 8th edition should a campaign or league start with armies in the old world.

It's incredibly unpredictable -- and almost certainly depends on how usable your old models will be in the new system.

Rarity also matters a lot. I don't see Empire Knights selling very well any time soon, because they've been stuffed in everything and are really old sculpts besides.

So, to answer specifically to Bretonnians, I would guess that certain things that were very common (like everything Core) would be very cheap, but certain things might get much more expensive or harder to find (if there's a certain Enchantress sculpt you simply must have, for example.)

Orks - "Da Rust Gitz" : 3000 pts
Empire - "Nordland Expeditionary Corps" : 3000 pts
Dwarfs - "Sons of Magni" 2000 points
Cygnar - "Black Swan" 100 pts
Trollbloods - "The Brotherhood"
Haqqislam- "Al-Istathaan": 300 points
Commonwealth - Desert Rats /2nd New Zealand 1000 points

It also fluctuates.

5th edition DE had swordsmen... elves. 6th edition DE did not. Swordsman models became practically worthless.

Fastforward to the latest book; 'Dreadswords' are introduced. 5th edition DE swordsmen jump in price, becoming almost as valuable as the new ones.

You just do not know, until it happens.

Do we actually know if anything is getting discontinued? I'm getting really panicky about it.

The old meta is dead and the new meta struggles to be born. Now is the time of munchkins.

No. No one knows anything, as per standard GW practices.

When it's on the front page of games-workshop.com you will know. Until then it will only be unsubstantiated rumours.

The website says the rulebook, army books, End times books and Island of Blood are not going to be available after June 26 (the Age of Sigmar is coming!)

I just bought 10 6th Ed Knights of Chaos for $40! 4 bucks a knight, in metal? Yes please!!

Reality is a nice place to visit, but I'd hate to live there.

Due to work, I can usually only ship any sales or trades out on Saturday morning. Please trade/purchase with this in mind.

A good rule of thumb will be plastic or finecast. If it's plastic it'll probably be around until newer kits replace. Finecast is being gradually removed.

Just snooping around eBay and Bretonnian stuff is not cheap right now, plus there is not a lot available. I frankly don't see them getting any cheaper. That's why I bought a battalion box last week as insurance against them being discontinued.
