I recently bought the Orkz section of the AoBR set, i.e. 1 Warboss, 5 Nobs, 20 Boys, and 3 Deff Koptas. What would be a good expansion to this list? I'm thinking a trukk or two and maybe some more boys, followed by some Lootas or some Storm Boyz?

you need at least 60 ork boyz. then I would get 15ish lootas for heavy support and then some Biker boyz for fast attack, or just mod the Deff koptas to be Warbikes...I hate Deff koptas, they always fail me.

Get some Grots too. The Boyz are supposed to go up and fight stuff, the Grots can hold objectives if you need them too, or if you're having some of the Boyz footslog, you can have them shield for da Boyz.

Definitely. I think having that many boys gives me tons of options. Also, has anyone used the formation in the book? I think its minimum 1 HQ and 3 Troops.

i love the formation in the book and always use it. You know why?? Because it gives you 3 HQs.
This gives you room for a Warboss, a Painboy and a BigMek or Weirdboy. In my list I run a Biker Warboss w/ a painboy on a bike with that bikers. But elsewhere in the list I like to add either a weirdboy or a big mek. recently I have been using the weirdboy to act as a sort of wild-card. Some of his powers are very powerful and if rolled can have a pretty big impact on the game. And even if you don't end up making him work offensively, you still get some psychic defense.

I like rolling on demonology and trying to roll a 6 for his powers, that way I can turn him into a demon prince and have him summon demons for the rest of the game :-P pretty amusing.

Depends on what direction you want to expand. Do you want a footslogging horde, speed freaks or walker wall? Maybe something a bit more unusual - a gunline or outflanking madness with a ton of kommandoes, for example?

Having say a hundred boyz in your possession isn't a bad idea. Whether or not your going to run a tide, you never know if you want to run three maxed size squads. But you do learn it takes time to play with that many.
And 60 is a good sweet spot. 2 units of 30 or 3 units of 20 can be good.

I definitely want at least a couple Kanz, I just love their models. Also, definitely considering some Kommandos for their outflank goodness.

Well Kommandos and Killa Kans are fun models with some fun special rules.
However they tend not to do much. At least Kommandos are easier to fit in a list as they dont take up the highly contested Heavy Support Slot. Seriously, you will be kicking yourself trying to figure out which heavy support option is better. Battlewagons, lootas, or mek gunz. And all of them are better when you take multiple units of them.

I have found with orks.... you can pretty much do whatever you want....
I ran a 3k list this weekend with 40 grots and no boys and almost won  (took mostly burnas, gorkanaughts and fliers)

Unfortunately, kanz have been severely overnerfed since the last dex. If you want to run them effectively, will have to homerule stuff. As is, they're worth 30-35 pt but not 50.
Kommandoes can be doing fine. If you're taking them, consider Snikrot. He adds a lot to them. Another option is to run a min squad with a couple rokkits or bigshootas to camp on objectives. But koptas are doing it better.
There's a formation of 4 kommando squads with Snikrot that all outflank together and reroll cover saves the turn they arrive. Unfortunately, it's a lot of pts in reserves and lots of dangerous stuff ignores cover or is too fast for them.

For Kans run Dread Mob. They are "as Codex: Orks" except for being 35pts instead of 50, bigger units, and Fast Attack instead of Heavy Support.
50pts is really too much for these things. Look at IG sentinels and you'll see what I mean. Woe betide Orks get something decent, must nerf immediately

50 is way too much, but you can still run them and have fun. They're not competitive, but that's not the end all/be all of 40k. Especially not with Orks.
Take what you like. Most of us end up with more stuff than we can field in a single army anyways. Orks are addictive.

Tbh your already gimping yourself with Orks without fielding overcosted units. Necrons, Eldar, Daemonkin etc can field some trash because the rest of the army makes up for it, but Orks you gotta make sure your not gimping your army too badly or it won't even be a game.

This is more my level. I run my Daemons for when i really want to win, with Orkz I'm just looking to throw dice, maybe at 1500 or 2k I'll run heavy hitter lists. Plus I'd only bring like 3 or so for the fluff.

Tankbustas are really pretty good. I like to run them in bigger squads in a Battle wagon. You can get 15 rocket shots coming out of a wagon is pretty good. Lootas will also work out of a Wagon pretty well. They can glance up to Armor 13 if they are lucky, and rolling tons of dice (which lootas will do) will get you some of the numbers you need. Used both of these units in a game last night against IG. Used Tankbustas on the front AV 14 armor until they turned to react and then hit the side armor of his tanks with the lootas. Really did quite a number on his static tank line.

Are Big Choppas on a squad of Nobs worth it? I'm playing 1k points so far, so it'd be a tooled up Warboss, Painboy, a nob with Power Klaw and 8 Nobs, all with heavy armor minus the Boss in a trukk or battlewagon.

Big choppas are probably worth it on a whole squad. I don't think I have ever taken a squad of Nobz all by themselves though. You would need to make sure you were hitting something that makes sense. The big choppas do however get them enough to punch through most vehicles in CC. That alone might be worth it. Again assuming it is a whole squad.

Yeah I'm gonna try it out, see what happens. Side note, since 'Ard Case makes vehicles not open topped, how does that affect assaulting from said vehicle?
