Hey all, I bought a boxed game today that appears to be a precursor to Epic 40K. It's the same small scale as Epic and is date stamped 1989.

I was just wondering if it was worth anything to anyone. I got it and the only other GW item the guy had (Brand new Dark Vengeance with additional paint, glue and brushes) for $50 Canadian.

That is old. Any pics for the good folks here to help identify or pick out details that might help folks tell you what you found.

Ahem. It's 'Space Marine' 6mm scale gaming. From back in the days you could play proper apocalyptic battles with titans, daemon princes, entire armoured companies, whole WAAAAGHS!. Then hit RT/2nd ed to play out some smaller skirmishes.

OP. Its worth what someone is willing to pay. Does have the rulebooks, card templates, scenery and minis?

Yes, it has a ton of stuff. Some of the Eldar are still on their sprue. Tanks and Marines are built. I haven't taken a full inventory of everything yet.

That game was my first miniatures exposure to Warhammer 40k.

I had a copy that I sold a few years ago and got $100 for it. You can probably get more depending on the shape it's in, or keep it to play a fantastic game.

I second the call to keep it.

Bloody brilliant game and, IMO, once you play this you'll soon realize that 40K rules are gak for large scale battles.

It has:

16 Land Raiders
32 Rhinos
Loads of Space Marine infantry, some still on sprue and some mounted to bases of 5

About 10 sprues of what I think are Eldar. The Infantry look like tiy Guardians and there are 20 per sprue. The tanks are wedge-shaped and there are 2 per sprue.

Some of this stuff has been painted. Was that an intended part of the game? The stuff is molded in different colours of plastic.

To answer your question regarding painting and the 'wedge' shaped tanks.

Those are the old style Eldar grav tanks. If you look back into the 6mm history of GW you will find that many models have changed over time. You will also find that many of the recent models for 40k are actually quite old and are based on epic mini's.

Yes you can paint the mini's. And you are correct that different colour of plastics were used, to better identify the models if you didn't paint but still played.

If many of the models are unpainted or still on sprue then the box is worth more. Just an FYI.

Are any of the buildings intact?

Regardless, I would suggest you hold onto it and perhaps even paint them up. You never know, maybe EPIC will see a resurgence and you'll have the basis for an army.
