Alright time to start planning for Encounter at Farpoint. With 2 of the Q cards coming down a turn this scenario can screw with a lot of builds.

Check out the cards if you haven't seen them. Two of them are picked randomly each turn.

So with the possibility of captains, upgrades, and actions being taken out, I'm thinking bare bones ships may be the way to go.

So what are the possibilities...

Ok list 1) this list is possible for everyone in June with the release of the Ning'Tao

20 B'Rel
20 B'Rel
20 B'Rel
20 B'Rel
20 B'Rel
20 B'Rel
120

24 shots a turn, that's enough to take care of a sphere or some fighters

ah fighters... no captains, but high skill, expect to see some... how about some of them...hmmmm

list 2)

26 Koranok
24 Keldon Class
26 Reklar (its BS action is not effected by A POWERFUL MIND)
24 First Wave Attack Fighters
20 Hideki Fighters
120

list 3)

22 USS Enterprise (not effected by A POWERFUL MIND)
20 Constitution Class
18 Suurok Class
20 fighters
20 fighters
20 fighters

120

What are you guys thinking

I'm thinking I'll show up about 10 minutes before the start, throw a list together, and play.

At some point during the night, I'll shake my head and swear that I won't do that again for the next tournament.

Me thinks this OP will be all about the Fighters... Fighters for days. The only question is, does your meta play that fighters don't count towards the three ship minimum? That's really put the lid on them in my area.

Personally I don't think fighters should count, but WK disagrees with me
(http://wizkidseventsystem.com/bb/viewtopic.php?f=24&t=5672)

Fighter rules are too different from standard ships for my taste and are very open to abuse. I have seen some nasty fighter lists around the net., I am thankful that they haven't been too crazy in my area. The most I have seen is 2 squads of fed fighters. The crazy fighter combos have been limites since the FAQ, but I still think they should be limited to only one squad per full 100 points.

Ok, thought this one up

32 Jem'Hadar Battle Cruiser

32 Jem'Hadar Battle Cruiser

32 Jem'Hadar Battle Cruiser

24 1st Wave Attack Fighters

120 Total

The cruisers are solid with 5 attacks so they can dish out some damage. They also have 10 total hit points so the likelihood of them being one shoted is very slim. The fighters can soak up damage and are only affected by a few of the Q cards.I kinda like this one less cheese than fighter spam and not as fragile as fighter spam.

That's a great list. Chunky, steady, with a bit of fighter in there.

Damn that is mean

If you like swarms Mr. S, how about 6 Jem fighters they require 6 hits to destroy (unless you get a direct hit) 3 hull 2 shields each and 18 total attack dice. Should take two shots to take one out.

Naked Jem H'Dar Fighters are a little lacking in firepower for an OP, they need their torpedoes. My other idea is 6 B'Rels, 6 ships for 24 attacks

Hey there guys I have had my first crack at Q1 over the weekend. This was the first OP for this venue since the end of the Collective, so only 2 of use showed up. I would have expected a lot of people to be after the Hood, but I think the store only put it on their facebook page and nowhere else. I decided to fly my triple Battle Cruiser list.
32 Battle Cruiser
32 Battle Cruiser
32 Battle Cruiser
24 1st Wave Attack Fighters

My opponent flew
Sovereign Class
Picard 9
Dorsal Phasers
Sulu
Riker (Pegasus)
Escape Pod

Sovereign Class
Kirk 9
Indy Fleet Captain (weapon)
Dorsal Phasers
Mystery talent ??

Praetus
Donatra
Cloaked Mines
Cloaked Mines

I set up my cruisers to the left at an angel and the fighters in the middle. He set up in the middle.

Turn 1
Our Q cards were Incredible Power and Very Advanced. I just inched up with 1 straights and was unaffected by the cards. My opponent got hurt bad. The Praetus took a damage because he was trying to get out of range 3 from the edge, which it didn’t and still got both sets of mines disables. Picard’s ship had Riker and the escape pod disabled and Kirk had the Dorsal Phasers and his Elite Talent disabled. Not a good start for him.

Turn 2
The Q cards turned up A Powerful Mind and Very Advanced. I didn’t let the Aux tokens deter me and did BS with the cruisers and an Evade with the Fighters. Picard knocked the shields off of one cruiser and Kirk took out a fighter token. The cruisers combined fire to take out Pircard’s shields and deal 2 damage to him. The fighters took 3 shields off of Kirk. Donatra stayed cloaked.

Turn 3
Q cards were Incredible Power and Very Advanced. That was fine with me because I was going do 1s anyway to get rid of the Aux tokens. 2 cruisers did 1 straights and one of them and the fighters did a 1 bank. Picard became a sitting duck as he bumped the front cruiser. Kirk was not doing any better as he bumped the Praetus.

Picard did some damage to the cruiser that had already lost shields, but it wasn’t enough. Kirk had nothing in his front arc and because of the bump he couldn’t enable his dorsal phasers. The fighters finished off Picard and 2 cruisers ganged up to eliminate Kirk. The third cruiser was left with nothing to shoot at.

Turn 4

The Q cards came up Honored Judge and Very Advanced. My opponent made some amazing evade rolls and the chase began.

Turn 5
Q cards were Incredible Power and A Powerful Mind. I decided to risk the minefield and pursue Donatra. My opponent pulled off a sensor echo and only one cruiser was able to shoot for nothing. I lost a fighter token and some shields from the mines.

Turn 6
Q Cards, A Powerful Mind and Very Advanced. This time I was able to score another hit on Donatra. I believe one cruiser took some damage from the mines.

Turn 7
Q cards Very Advanced and Honored Judge. My opponent put down another minefield. I decided to keep the Aux tokens and to 2 turns. Nothing much else happened.

Turn 8
Q cards Very Advanced and A Powerful Mind. I did green moves to get rid of my Aux tokens, but got them back by taking an action. It was worth it because I needed the BS to get through my opponents defense rolls. I am not sure why my opponent did a come about but it left him dead in my sights.

I was pleased how well the cruisers held up, they are quite tough. I was taking damage from those mines for several turns and I still had life left in the remaining two. This is how they were looking at the end.

I did win a hood, but I had another pleasant surprise. The store used to require us to buy a ship to play in OPs. This time they decided to have an entry fee instead. However the shop owner decided that anyone who paid the entry fee would get 50% off any STAW purchases that day. So I picked myself up an early father's day present

I have an opportunity to go to a couple more Q1 events this month. I may try some different lists I'll be sure to let you guys know how it goes

Fort Mill, SC

Greetings All! This is my first post on here. Just got to play the first Q OP last night and wanted to share my build and what I faced with the rest of you.

First off, I took a Dominion fleet consisting of the Koranak, Kraxon, a Cardassian Galor Class ship, a Jem'Hadar Attack ship and the Hideki Attack fighters as my resource. The four ships had skill 1 captains and no upgrades.
My results were I won my first two games and barely lost in the final shot of the third game. I came in third place which was good enough to win the USS Hood at my game store as the judge is nice enough not to take one as his fee. :-)

The round I faced a similar Dominion build. He had three Galor class ships, the Battle Cruiser and took the Master Strategist resource. We both had skill 1 captains and I won the roll off for initiative. I placed all my ships in a group in the center of my starting area. Lucky for me he split his ships into two groups of two. Each group placed on the sides of his starting area. I immediatly took all my ships in a soft turn 3 toward his group of two galors. He made another mistake of bring one galor far out and leaving the second back in reserve. I took out the lead Galor and then the second Galor. I then had to turn around and deal with the third Galor and his Battlecruiser that were coming up on me quickly. All told I lost two Galors and he lost his third Galor. I won.

Round two I faced a mighty Federation fleet of Voyager, Enterprise D, Sutherland and Fed Fighters! I believe he had some higher skilled captains and even admiral Kirk on one of the ships. His three big ships all had 360 fire abilities on them. I set up in the middle again and he set the voyager and sutherland in the corner and the fighters with Ent-D in the center coming straight at me. I was able to take out his Sutherland and Enterprise D and nearly killed his fighters but he slipped away before I finished the job. Voyager slipped by me and roamed the outside of the skirmish area taking 360 shots when she could. I believe he was able to take out the Koranak and Krazon and it came down the the final shot of the game. My Jem'Hadar attack ship had 1 hull left and I got it out of range of his fighters but Voyager swooped around and just had range on her. I placed an evade token on my ship. He hit me for two damage, I used the evade token and rolled one evade dice to save my ship and get the win!

Round three I was facing a Klingon armada of two Vor'cha class ships and two B'Rel class ships. He had several captains including Chang, Worf and others. Also had crew like Drex and others to help turn his battlestation rolls into hits. We set up in the center of the board ready for a dogfight! After the first round of attacks and he hurt my fighter squads I put a bunch of target locks on Chang's ship to make him think I was going after that ship. He then cloaked it to get the defense dice by left the ship next to it uncloaked and thus he only had one defense die to roll. I then opened full fire on it and blew it away. The next round I still had Chang target locked with most of my remaining ships. He was next to die. That left Worf and a skill 1 captain to go. By this point we were all up in each others area so movement became very important. I think by this time I was down to my last token on the fighters and at least one Galor were gone. The Q cards came in to play too as we got the card where you can only move 1 space or take a roll a lot at this point so doing the hard turn abouts didn't happen. We started doing soft 1 turns. This was another game that came down to the final round of shooting. I had the point lead but he manuevered his ships very well and got both of them behind my Jem'Hadar attack ship. It still had full hull but no shields and did not survive his final assault.

I had a great time play, all three games were very close and competitive. Sorry I don't have pictures, maybe next time I'll take some. Hope you liked my battle review.

Hey there Dakka Trekkers. I got myself to a 2nd Q1 last weekend. Feeling confident from my last outing I decided to try a similar build. I stuck with the triple Battle Cruiser threat, however I also threw in the Officer Exchange program. This is what I came up with:

00 Officer Exchanger program, Feds & Dominion
32 Battle Cruiser
00 The Doctor

32 Battle Cruiser
00 Clark Terrell

32 Battle Cruiser
00 Ronald Moore

24 First Wave Attack Fighters

I could have gone with Maxwell Burk instead of Moore, but I didn’t think I would ever use Burk’s ability and Moore was new so I went with him.

There is the list, so let me take you through BALDRICK’S BAD DAY

First round was against
Romulan/Borg Warbird
Toreth
Magnometric Guided Charges
IG

Romulan Science Vessel
Donatra
Quark (Disruptor Beams)
Cloaked Mines

Prometheus
Valdor
Fleet Captain
Admiral Forrest
Romulan Highjackers
Cloaked Mines
Prometheus Sheild thing??
Multi Adaptive Shielding

I apologize now for the white block in the pictures. The store had plexiglass covers over the boards that reflected the lights.

Turn 1
We just move up due to the Q card.

Turn 2
I moved up, risked the Aux token and used all 3 Cruisers to take out Toreth.

Turn 3
Donatra bumped in a bad spot and paid the price.

Two of Cruisers took a beathing from the Prometheus and the mines, but I still had the upper hand in the game.

Turn 4
This is the point where I had the game and just could just circle around his Prometheus until time… but NOPE. We got that Unstoppable Force card and with one limping Cruiser it was too much to risk.

I lost one Cruiser to the mines and another to the Prometheus.

Turn 5
I managed to get the Prometheus down to 1 hull

Turn 6
I lost my fighters to the mines. That Unstoppable Force card came up again and I just couldn’t catch the Prometheus before time.

So this round was a lose

On to more misfortune in round 2. My opponent flew:

Neg’Var
Martok

Koraga
Worf

Vor’Cha
Gowron

Fighter Squadron 6

This game I was way off and was making mistakes from the start.

Set Up

Turn 1
Not much happened here we just moved up.
Pic missing

Turn 2
I moved too far up and got in range of all of his ships

Turn 3
I lost one cruiser and another was limping. I took out Gowron and took a token off of his fighters.

Turn 4
I lost the crippled Cruiser and took another token off his fighters.
Pic missing

Turn 5
I believe he caught my last cruiser and took it out. I was left with just my fighters and time was called.
Pic missing

So loss number 2 for the day. This one was completely my fault. I moved up way too far and I should have never placed my fighters so far to the right. Against Klingons they should have been behind the cruisers to prevent come abouts. Oh well, a bad day gaming beats a good day working.

Round 3 was a bye.

Here are some bonus pics during the winning round as the Romulans and Klingons square off. The Romulans ended up winning the day, crushing the Klingons as it should be

We also had two other players, a faction pure Dominion and a Kazon swarm. The Dominon got screwed by the Q cards and taken apart by the Kazon.

Despite the bad showing it was a fun day. It was my first time playing at this shop, but a great store and a great group of players. I would like to go back next month, but we’ll have to see though. It is an hour away from my house and $8 in tolls . Between the gas and tolls I could almost buy most prize ships on eBay, but it is a fun place

So l will have to learn from my mistakes and try again next time.

-Genzod

Congrats on the placing, some good wins there

I'd like to think that but you can't win them all.

One of the interesting things about this scenario is it maske you leave your comfort zone. If you rely on captains forget it. If you rely on upgrades forget that too. That's not a bad thing but it does make it difficult to build for, Very fitting for Q I think.

Ok so this list popped into my head last night

00 Officer Exchange Program Borg/Federation

44 Tactical Cube
00 The Doctor

46 Tactical Cube 001
04 Admiral Kirk
00 Clark Terrell

26 Assimilated Vessel 87... (Klingon BoP)
00 Ronald Moore

Ok so go slow keep the BoP behind the cubes until they are all in range to attack. Ronald Moore can give the BoP BS & TL. Kirk gives a good chance at attacking first should Q decide to mess with the captains plus he can mess with upgrades that Q doesn't.

Thoughts

It's disgusting the use of the Dr is very clever for Q. I think my concern is I'm not sold on the effectiveness of admiral kirk - a good build will, like yours, run minimal upgrades so these may be wasted points.

Yeah Kirk won't do much against a bare bones fleet, he will be handy for when the captains get flipped over. I toook him because he was with Officer Exchange he is cheaper then the Queen. However Admiral Forest would only be 2 points hmm....

Hate to be the bearer of bad news, but that Romulan fleet you faced appears to be a non-legal build.

I reconstructed his fleet from the turn 1 photo since it's often a good learning experience to give winning builds a try. Most cards are obvious from their images. The fleet captain has the Independent symbol and has to be the Ind(Dom) as it's the only one that gives him the extra tech slot (and SP discount) needed to fit the rest of the cards. The warbird has ability text so is a named ship, must be borg/rom to take the mag charges and the 5 shield tokens confirm that this is the borg/rom Avatar of Tomed.

This is what he seems to have:

Romulan Science Vessel (Romulan Science Vessel) [12]
- Donatra 6 (Captain) [4]
- Cloaked Mines [2]
- Quark [3]
- - Disruptor Beams [0]
Ship Total: 21 SP

Federation Starship (Prometheus Class) [28]
- Independent (Dominion) Fleet Captain [5]
- - Multi-Adaptive Shields [3]
- Valdore 5 (Captain) [4]
- Maxwell Forrest (Admiral) [3]
- Cloaked Mines [1]
- Regenerative Shielding [6]
- Romulan Hijackers [4]
Ship Total: 54 SP

I.R.W. Avatar of Tomed [34]
- Toreth 7 (Captain) [4]
- Interphase Generator [2]
- Magnetometric Guided Charge [3]
- Disruptor Pulse [3]
- Sakonna [3]
Ship Total: 49 SP

Resource: Fleet Captain [0]

Fleet Total: 124 SP

Generated by Utopia
http://comatoes.github.io/staw-utopia/

The Prometheus is 4 SP over, so my guess is that he (and anyone who checked the build) misread the Regenerative Shielding text - It's +4 SP for any ship other than U.S.S. Prometheus (the named ship) and he is clearly using a generic Prometheus class. With all the SP discounts going on (Fleet Captain, Hijackers, Sakonna, Quark), it's easy to miss these things when calculating costs by hand. Sucks if he used the shield regen and that cost you a win :(

Hey there guys it was a busy STAW weekend, I had two Q1s in my area. The first was on Saturday. I decided to run the Cube list above.

Officer Exchange Program Feds/Borg

46 Tactical Cube 001
00 Clark Terrell
04 Admiral Kirk

44 Tactical Cube
00 The Doctor

26 Asimilated BoP 8…
00 Ronald Moore

The first round was a bye and the longest hour of my life.

Second round was against a Romulan list with from what I remember:

Khazara
Toreth
Independent Fleet Captain (tech)
Disruptor Pulse
Interphase
Cloaked Mines

Science Vessel
Donatra
Mendak
Cloaked Mines
Quark (Disruptor Beams)

Scimitar
Salatrel
Interphase

I forgot to take pics for most of the match. Turn 1 we just advanced. The cloaked mines and Quark got disabled from Q. Khazara had her IG and Disruptor Pulse disabled. Turn 2 he dropped 1 mine, but even with the new Borg movement it wasn’t much of a factor. The Cubes attack Khazara and got rid of the IG and did 3 damage. Turn 3 I did managed to catch Khazara between all three ships.

The cubes finished of Khazara, that circle is where it used to be. The BoP did one damage to the science vessel. Before Khazara went down she and the Scimitar hit Kirk’s cube pretty hard. I think it only had a few hull left.

Turn 4 the BoP finished off the science vessel. Scimitar and the Doctor’s cube exchanged fire. Turn 5 both of my ships fired on Scimitar who had put up her shields. Scimitar hit my cube again.

Turn 6
I had no choice but to move the BoP off because it couldn’t get a shot on Scimitar. Scimitar had 1 hull left and my cube had 3 hull. My only chance to win was to use the Doctor to boost his captain skill, and it worked. I rolled a crit which made the Doctor Skill 10, so Salatrel and the Doctor where shooting simultaneously. Scimitar rolled well and destroyed the cube, but the Doctor shot back and took out the Warbird

I was left with my little BoP and won. So for any or the doubter out there, the Doctor is totally worth it.

Round 3 was very different. Yes those are 3 sets of fighters , 2 constitutions, and a constellation.

Forgot to take any more pics of this match, but it when about as you would expect. I took out the 3 ships and his fighters chipped away at my cubes. I believe I got one fighter down to 1 token and the others down to 2 tokens each. So that was a loss I just wasn’t equipped to take on 3 sets of fighters .

So Sunday I had another shot at this event. At this point I was growing tired of the scenario and fighters. I was also expecting some of my regular opponents at this one so I decided to be more devious then usual. This venue also changes the suggested format a little, 60 point max 2 ship min, so Dreadnaughts are a possibility. Here is my cunning plan:

Officer Exchange Program Borg/Romulan

38 Borg Shere
03 Valdor
04 Cloaked Mines
04 Cloaked Mines

40 Borg Shpere 807…
01 Mirok
03 Admiral Mendak
04 Cloaked Mines
02 Romulan Pilot

20 Hideki Fighters

Yeah this is a pretty hole list. But it can deal with just about everything and I am sick of fighters. Mendak gives attack quality against cloaked ships, fighters and cloaked mines deal with other fighters. Borg still have amazing movement the 3 straights on the sphere are green so that helps with the Aux tokens from Q. I also found Mirok very useful for getting around the Unstoppable Force card. On average it only lands one hit on the ship and Mirok just heals it as long as he is within range one of the other shere.

I forgot to take pics for Round 1 we had to do a lot of moving of the tables to fit the mats. But my Opponent had:

Officer Exchange Program Fed/Romulan

Prometheus class
The Doctor
Will Riker (Pegasus)
Paris
EMH Mark II
Dorsal Phaser Array

Prometheus class
Generic Captain
Admiral Hiren
Dorsal Phaser Array

Praetus
Donatra
Cloaked mines
Cloaked mines

Fighter Squadron 6

He set up in the middle, I set up in the corner. Turn 1 we got Unstoppable Force and the Aux token thing. My opponent went slow and did 1 straight with all ships and he took a damage cloaking the Prometheus. I gunned it with the cubes doing 4 straights, no damage on Valdor and 1 on Mirok which he healed. My fighters did a 1 straight. Turn 2 we both dropped our mines. His were really far back and didn’t affect the game. Two of my mines were about halfway through the board and the 3rd was closer to my side, making one large area of effect. Again we got Unstoppable force so he inched up, I backed up well out of his range. I think he got shot on my fighters but didn’t hit. Turn 3, I backed up the spheres again and sent in the fighters. He backed up with the Doctor and sent the other Prometheus forward which lost 3 shields to the mines. Donatra took another damage from the mines and his fighters lost a token. I crashed my fighters into his Prometheus. My fighters took his Prometheus down to 2 hull then he took one token off the fighters and the Doctor took another off. Turn 4 I moves up 1 with the spheres. He lost Donatra and a fighter token to the mines, his hurt Prometheus went down to 1 hull and the Doctor lost a shield. I believe I got one shot on his fighters taking off a token. His fighters and the doctor took out my fighters. Turn 5 He had 2 tokens left I think and a damaged Prometheus with the Doctor. My Spheres gunned it up 4 locked and took out the Doctor. Turn 6 the sphers cleaned up the fighters. At the end I believe the Centurion had one shield left and Mirok/Mendak was at full health.

So one win and on to round 2 where I remembered I had a phone.

Round 2 my opponent had
USS Enterprise D

USS Defiant
Rudolph Ransom
Aft Phase Cannon

Defiant Class
Tom Paris
Something else??

Intrepid Class
Tunneling Neutrino Beam
Charles Tucker

He set up in the middle and again I set up in the corner.

Turn 1 he banks out and I move up.

Turn 2 He banks back to me I inched up 1

Turn 3 I dropped my mines and he continues in on me. Fighters move up.

Turn 4 I risked the Damage from Unstoppable Force and gunned the fighters right into his Enterprise D which lost 2 shields and took a hull damage to the mines I think he had lost two shields earlier to Unstoppable Force. His Intrepid lost a shield to the mines, I think. My spheres moved up slowly. He used Tunneling Neutrino Beam to repair a damage on the D. My fighters hit the D for 2 crits and a hit. Everything shot at my fighters except the intrepid and took it down to 1 token.

Turn 5 the D lost another hull to the mines. The Defiant class lost 2 shields to the mines and the USS Defiant lost 2 as well. Mendak split fire and destroyed the defiant class and the D. The Valdor sphere took the USS Defiant down to 2 hull.

Turn 6 the intrepid and Defiant make a run for it. Valdor catches the Defiant and finish it off. Time is call.

Win number 2 on to round 3.

Round 3 was against a regular opponent. He flew:

Scimitar
Admiral Mendak
Interphase Gen

Reklar
Gul Lemek

USS Prometheus
Chakotay
Ablative hull armour
Sulu
Paris

I set up in the middle he set up opposite me. We got the disable upgrade cards first turn but he tried to circle wide for a few turns before coming in at me. For three or four turns he flew out wide avoiding me. I actually thought for a while he was going to avoid me until time and play for a draw.

Eventually he did turn in and I dropped my mines.

I forgot the pic for the next turn. But he swung in and I again risked the damage from Unstoppable Force on the fighters and flew right next to the Reklar. The fighters stripped the shields off the Reklar and he took off a token.

Next turn all of his ships took damage from the mines. The fighters took out the Reklar. Mendak hut the Prometheus and his two ships took out the valdor sphere.

At this point things are looking in his favor, but he has one very hurt ship.

Final turn Prometheus moves past Mendak. Scimitar comes about taking two damage from the mines. Mendak is at full health and my fighters have two tokens, he can’t destroy either of my ships in one turn. Scimitar takes a token off my fighters. My Mendak Sphere took out the Prometheus. Win number 3.

I was the only one with 3 wins for the day so I got to take home another lovely USS Hood Now that I think about it this was the first time in a while where I didn’t get a bye, which was a big plus. I have decided that I hate fighters and after going to 4 OPs I am done with Q1. Q2 will be a nice change, but 4 of the same OP may be a bit much. So on to more cunning plans…

Mendak may only be put on a Romulan ship so that sphere build you used was illegal Baldrick

I can see why you disliked the fighter spam and connie list! My Borg list for Q1 would be Tac cube with full assault and Sphere 4270 to allow for hosing those fighters!

You are absolutely right well I am going to owe the guys a big apology next month. I can't believe that I let that one get by me and not a single opponent or the TO caught it

The generic sphere loses the tech slot, so you can't fit two mines. Quark fixes this, though, and even saves you a point.

Thanks for the battle reports. Q1 will be my first OP and it's helpful to see how it can play out.

I'm planning a bare-bones 3 galors, 2 fighters fleet, but I'm not sure if I'm worrying too much about the Q cards. A lot of people seem to have taken a "normal" fleet and done quite well.

Yeah might just scrap this idea and move onto a different list.

I have seen it go both ways. One guy just played his normal list and moved on with it. However I saw a few who let their whole game be thrown off by the Q cards. It is a much easier approach to with less to worry about and fighters are ideal for this scenario.
