Veteran Wolf Guard Squad Leader

Hi guys, I started playing X-Wing a few weeks ago, and to force myself to start going to a new club, I've joined a league they are going to start soon. I've not got a huge collection, (the starter set, a tie fighter expansion, a defender expansion, a phantom expansion, an interceptor expansion and the imperial aces expansion), and was wondering if any of you would be able to look at this squad I've mocked up for this league. I'm not sure if I could make anything stronger with what I have. Just a bit of background-y bits so you have an idea of how poor I am at this game, I have only played about 10 games, and lost eight. I'm still learning how to manoeuvre my ships correctly so they don't keep on colliding with ships and asteroids, hence why I haven't really chosen any characters, and despite using Whisper quite a lot, in a game earlier it got bombed to death by turn 3, so I'm a bit reluctant to include it in a league list, especially as I don't have Veteran Instincts yet. So yeah here's my squad, any advice on stuff I can change would be greatly appreciated

TIE Fighter-Academy Pilot
TIE Fighter-Academy Pilot
TIE Fighter-Academy Pilot
TIE Interceptor-Saber Squadron
TIE Interceptor-Saber Squadron
TIE Interceptor-Saber Squadron

That comes in at 99 points, I did consider taking an Obsidian Squadron TIE Fighter instead of one of the Academy Pilots, but figured that extra chance at getting the initiative might be more helpful than getting on ship to PS2 rather than PS1.

My instant reaction is you say you're not so hot at the game yet, and that is a list which needs a decent amount of skill to fly.

The issue with an all low PS list like that is you're going to have to be very good at both planning your own manoeuvres and anticipating your opponents. Plus with a lot of ships on the table you're in very real danger of tripping over your own feet, so to speak.

I'd be inclined to go with fewer, higher PS ships. It'll give you both less to think about and allow you to react more to what your opponent does.

Fel + PTL is always good, traditionally with either a Stealth Device or Autothrusters (or Royal Guard TIE and both!) but I'm not sure if you'll have SD (and I know you won't have AT)

I recently had a lot of fun with Echo, Advanced Sensors, ACD and Veteran Instincts, the new cloaking/de cloaking rules haven't done much to make it less of a handful, in your case, lacking VI I'd think about Predator.

Go for what you're comfortable with, but I think you'll find high PS/lower ship count lists a bit easier to play while you're learning.

Then don't fly a swarm. Stick to 3-4 ship lists until you can figure out the maneuvering aspect, and don't clutter up the table with more ships until you've mastered the smaller lists.

Other than don't fly a swarm yet? Interceptors are really bad without PTL and autothrusters. If you like interceptors get a starviper ASAP for autothrusters (you already have PTL), and use Soontir Fel. But until then it's not really worth flying them. They're way too fragile for the points and without PTL you can't make good use of their amazing action bar. But with proper upgrades available you could do something like this:

Soontir Fel + PTL + autothrusters + shield upgrade (36)
Carnor Jax + PTL + autothrusters + shield upgrade (35)
Black squadron TIE fighter (14)
Black squadron TIE fighter (14)
Total: 99

Use the basic TIEs as meatshields while your aces fly circles around things. It's probably not the greatest list ever, but you'll have a hard time doing better than that (especially if you want interceptors in your list) until you get more ships and upgrades.

There is no such thing as a hobby without politics. "Leave politics at the door" is itself a political statement, an endorsement of the status quo and an attempt to silence dissenting voices.

OK, homework for you:
Set up a small base. Just the base. Set the 1 strait template next to it. Note how the base is exactly 1 strait long. Then set each template into the slot and set another base at the end of that move. Examine where your base (ship) started and where the move ended it. Learn these dynamics. A hard 1 moves your base 1/2 up and 1/2 over with your facing 90 degrees off. Do this with each turn and see how many base-lengths your ship moved and the new facing.
2. Set 2 bases up side by side. Using the same template, move each base identical. Do they crash? Adjust the starting distance and try again. figure out how far apart you can put your ships to keep them together without hitting each other.
3. Set your map down and throw some Asteroids out randomly. It does not matter if they are in a legal position, you're looking for obstacles.Take a base and set it up, Now fly that ship around the rocks trying to avoid them. Get your eye used to seeing the distance and knowing what a safe move is. Then, add some tokens in between the rocks, Fly your ship around and try to collect the tokens.
4. Select a specific ship you want to fly (say a TIE Fighter or an X-Wing). Repeat step 3, but ONLY use the maneuvers available for that ship. Switch to a much different ship and try it again. Note how the different dial adds or removes options.
5. Set up 3 or 4 ships (say 4 TIEs) and repeat step 3 with an entire squadron. You can select different turns and straits, but try to keep all the ships within range 1 of each other without hitting anything.

Now your learning how to fly multiple ships without hitting each other and your eye is getting used to 'seeing' where your ship will roughly end up after a maneuver. This is your basic flying. Once you can keep a group of ships together you will be able to use them effectively. How to concentrate your total firepower and how to stay close to take advantage of your characters buffing.
Get a copy (available online) of each ships maneuver. Keep that reference on hand and study it so you have an idea of the potential moves your opponents will make (or be forced to make). Start with the common ships you will see in your local meta (likely IG-88, Decimators, TIE-INTs, Falcons, and E-Wings).

Finally, don't get discouraged. Play the game and ask for a critique at the end of the match. Learn from your mistakes and from the knowledge of people who have been playing longer. Don't be afraid to play the top guys either. You learn more from a challenging loss than you do from clubbing the 8 year old kid who is also just starting.

(EDIT) As for a suitable list to try...I would go with something like this (assuming your allowed to proxy cards):
Soontir Fel + Royal Guard Title+Push the Limit+Autothrusters+Stealth Device.
Royal Guard+ Royal Guard Title+PTL+Autothrusters+Stealth Device
Royal Guard+ Royal Guard Title+PTL+Autothrusters+Stealth Device
That's 95 points...likely giving you initiative. 3 very maneuverable ships with good defense and lots of green to clear stress. And you won't need to fly them together.

In addition to the above lessons, set up an enemy base and learn how to move, barrel roll, then boost around the guy so you can shoot him from the side at range 1 and he cant do anything to you (unless he's a turret).

I would tend to disagree... somewhat.

If you can't fly a swarm, definitely don't take a swarm to a tournament or Store Championship because you're setting yourself up for failure. Instead, play a bunch of friendly/casual games until you can get the hang of it. Maybe try flying smaller swarms (I'm a fan of the ace + 4-TIE swarm personally) before graduating to a full 6+ swarm.

Also, watch this video:
