Out of the hundreds of figures I've undercoated over the years, I've had maybe one mishap with spray paints, and that was from a really old can that had gone bad or something. Krylon spray primers have always worked well for me, with no appreciable loss of detail. If you're losing detail at the undercoating stage, you've either got a bad can, or you're doing it wrong. Anyone shelling out for a $15 can of GW spray is throwing away money.
An airbrush would be nice and probably a little more economical, but like others have said, I just don't have the residence for such a thing. Apartments and airbrushes don't mix well.

My gw rep says its a permanent replacement. Wants me to try it out and get in stock, will even credit me on the old cans of white i have on the shelf.
If it's better, happy days.
If it's worse...well, those cans of old white will leave the shop and go to my hobby room.

Incidentally, I hate priming white without an airbrush. Mr. Hobby is the only white primer out of a rattle can that I tolerate (it's ultrafine), but that is crazy expensive, because it comes in the tiniest of tiny bottles. I am not fond of P3 white -- nothing against P3, because I really like their black. Ditto with old GW.
So, if the new GW white is really good, "I guess" it could be worth the price. Maybe.
And $17 is about the price of the old one no? I dunno, because it's been forever since I've tried a can of their primer, but I recall that it wasn't cheap.
I think in Canada, undiscounted, P3 is about $14, and GW is about $19. In that ballpark.

RiTides wrote:I picked up and used some Army Painter primer this past weekend (at the local shop's recommendation over the GW brand, which they also had) and it was absolutely terrible!
Granted, not as terrible as the cheap Krylon and Rustoleum brands I also had at home and tried on test pieces... but all of them were extremely grainy compared to my fantastic Tamiya primer.
The problem is I needed white and only had the Tamiya in grey... how is the GW white? Luckily I had also picked up some Vallejo airbrush primer so I did it that way (it takes a lot longer though, so I'd like to have a rattle can solution).
GW White has served me very well. I hate the price, but the results have me still buying it.

In the UK, the Army Painter price is almost exactly the same as the GW price, and the latter has never once screwed up a model. Army Painter has - it has left the finish being rough and powdery, in a way that shows through paint. Generic spray undercoat never seems to be as cheap as is apparently is in the US, either.

Im a bit ignorant on paints - this new white is a primer + under coat?
As opposed to say something like mephiston red or the fang in a can which is just an undercoat?

Some AP is great - the red primer-undercoat is absolutely fantastic. Bone is pretty good - not perfect for detail, but great for larger models like Carnifexes etc, considering the time it saves. The Daemonic Yellow is, as pointed out earlier, a disaster. Even as a second coat it's not great - I've just discovered Humbrol Trainer Yellow which is far superior for my Bad moonz.
I've tried Tamiya Primer, both kinds, and was underwhelmed. It's more expensive than GW and smells worse.
If I could find a better, cheaper primer than GW of course I'd use it. But the idea of some kind of poverty-contest of how little you spend on primer, saving 10p or so for a model that cost a minimum of £10, and which you'll spend 10s of hours painting, is bizarre to me.

First, a disclaimer: I don't use GW colored sprays, so I'm not speaking from experience. Outside the UK, "spotty availability" is like saying that cell phone reception in Antarctica is hard to come by.
But, I digress: I believe that GW colored sprays are NOT intended to be used as a primer. This, based on the product description:
Khorne Red Spray is designed for basecoating all Citadel miniatures. When sprayed over an undercoat, it's a fast way to get a uniform base of colour onto models.
The colour in this spray is exactly the same as Citadel Base: Khorne Red, so if any part of the model gets missed when spraying, a quick tidy up with the equivalent paint will provide a complete basecoat.
This can contains 400ml of Khorne Red Spray.
The part where it reads, "When sprayed over an undercoat" makes it pretty unambiguous as to how it's intended to be used, I think

Having just sprayed a whole redemptionist gang with khorne red spray over bare metal, I can tell you that they can be used as a priming layer, but aren't intended to. The coat was not completely smooth, as it would have been if it was over a primed surface, but was still usable with a thin layer of hand-painted red over the top.
On another note, I really like GW's sprays, but another price rise? gah. It better be worth it...

Oh wow. If they have a new, better varnish, that would be cool There is a great void of good matte and satin varnishes at the moment; we've got Testor's dullcote and..... nope, that's it
Not that the old Purity Seal was terrible, it just wasn't great in any way, and just like every other rattle can varnish, it's so sensitive to humidity :(

For all the leftponders crowing about getting spraycans for a couple of bucks, over here Halfords' car primer sprays are £7.50 for 500ml (available in grey, white and red). That's 1.5p/ml, compared to 3.47p/ml for this new GW stuff (10.3oz ~300ml).

Over here it's the exact same price as the old one... And I haven't ever seen a can of spray paint for less than what would amount to $10, which is the very cheapest low-grade stuff. So in that context no, its totally fine. I guess spray paint in general is extremely cheap in the U.S. though which would change matters.

Sweet Christmas. Why is primer so expensive for ya'll?
I can literally walk into hobby lobby, almost anytime I want with a 40% off coupon, and get very good primer for about $3 a can.

I was under the impression that most normal consumer goods are super cheap in the U.S. compared to Europe. So much space to put huge, low-rent supermarkets combined with a huge consumer base and really low sales tax.
Edit: pretty sure sales tax (VAT) in the UK is 20%? And over here it's 25%.

I've always used GW's white primer to good effect. I keep buying it because anything cheap I've tried hasn't worked as well (in the context of what I can buy from an Australian hardware store) and I decided testing other sprays and deciding I didn't like them was costing more than just sticking with GW
But I finally stopped buying GW spray when I got an airbrush and vallejo primer. Not because I particularly like the vallejo primer, but it's just much more economical to spray primer from an airbrush because a 60ml bottle seems to last me forever.

I guess good, but won't buy it., not at $17 a can. Although I tend to use brush on primer since it's humid in Florida so sprays often fuzz up whenever I use them. I've tried gesso but the last few times it hasn't properly leveled out so I've been left with thick lumps or webbing that obscures some detail. I did recently get an airbrush so I'm excited to use that, but otherwise I'd just use cheap-o Walmart brand spray.
