Hello all, I have just decided to start back after a fair ammount of time away from the game.

I purchased my first box of Vargheists today, this was based simply as I really like the look of the models and have heard they are a good unit (Not read the codex fully yet).

I choose Vampire Counts as I really like the look of the models and from the rules I do know of, they sound really interesting to play.

But I would like any advice anyone can offer in terms of unit choices, play styles, are vampire counts competitive? (thinking of entering tournament scene).

And yh just any general information anyone can provide on Vampire counts army and rules in general.

Thank you.

In general, Vampire Counts is an horde army with lots of skeletons/zombies to stall time on your enemy hard units.

Your main weapons are the Lord and some special/rare units... You need to focus, most of vampire count armies, on the magic phase to create new models/restore wounds...

Your army is immune to psychology, so you will learn not much regarding psychology on other armies...

I would suggest for you to use Google to learn a lot from other armies, before going to a tournament

By the way, you really want to play Vampire Counts, or do you prefer Undead Legions (Vampire Counts + Tomb Kings)?

9th edition is coming out after space marines, probably end of the month / early July.

Any advice given now could be useless. Right now I'd suggest buying nothing, painting what you have, and waiting to see what 9th is like.

Generally VC have crappy core, good everything else.

Undead are a difficult army to learn with as you have army wide ITP and unbreakable but are also unstable.

You need magic in order to play the army to it's fullest. Ressurecting fallen warriors are a key component.

As for competitive, nobody known what 9th will bring. As for other models, well unbound is a rumour so nobody knows if you'll need core anymore or not.

Really the absolute best thing to do is wait a month & repost., we should have the new rules by then.

Trade rules: lower rep trades ships 1st. - I ship within 2 business days, if it will be longer I will contact you & explain. - I will NOT lie on customs forms, it's a felony, do not ask me to mark sales as "gifts". Free shipping applies to contiguous US states.

As others have said, the impending release of a rumoured new edition makes planning ahead quite difficult.

However, one thing you can count on with undead is having legions and legions of shambling hordes of undead. That means skeletons and zombies.

At 2,500 I currently run two units of 40 skeletons and 4 units of 5 direwolves. Regardless of the edition change I don't see that much changing. If you're looking at zombies then you probably need 200 or so.

Either way, don't go with the GW models. Too expensive for that sort of quantity. Mantic is much better for zombies, and Wargames Factory for skeletons. I got 90 wargames factory skeletons for I believe $70, shipped to my door. They're a bit finnicky, but they're actually my favourite skeletons on the market looks wise. The mantic zombies are pretty decent too. Can't say I'd like putting together 200 of them, though.

If your playing in a place that doesn't require GW models Mantic Games has great deals on their Undead stuff! You can get hordes of zombies and skeleton warriors for a fraction of the price of GW products.
