Subject: Ultramarines or Imperial Fists?

Hey guys! So I've never actually played the game yet (due to the lack of time) but I've been planning to do so for about an year now. I have started going through the general fluff, though and I'm at the third of the Horus Heresy books (which are awesome). So, anyway I finally chose to begin with the hoby and I got myself a tactical Space Marine squad. Well, I was looking through the Space Marine codex the other day and the Imperial Fists caught my eye, I gotta say they look really cool! I mean in the Heresy books Dorn and the IF are mentioned and they seem badass but I thought that yellow would be kind of strange as a color choice for power armor, but I guess I was wrong!
Anyway...the actual thing is that I'm really undecided, I don't know if to go with Ultramarines or Imperial Fists, I mean I like both color schemes. I haven't read a lot about Ultramarine fluff, but from what I've heard they're pretty 'flat'? But the real issue is that I'd like to go with the chapter that has the most 'Roman' feel to it, I certainly get that vibe from the Imperial Fists but the Ultramarines on the other hand have models which are basically 'roman'! Arr...they're both awesome!

Ultramarines are very much cast in a roman mold. And while they catch a lot of flack for being bland and generic, there actually is a lot of background and flavor to them. It’s just a lot more subtle then some of the other chapters which tend to beat you over the head with their theme. You could pick up and read some of the HH books that deal with the Ultras if you want to find out more about them. Or read the SM Codex, which includes a lot of their fluff.
From a practical POV, yellow is one of the harder colors to paint well. But looks nice and unique when done well. Both armies can be played well on the table, from a mechanics standpoint. There should be a new SM codex in a few weeks, so I might hold off picking one atm. But neither one is a bad choice, just whatever floats your boat.
Welcome to Dakka and Space Marines, by the way!

Thanks for the suggestion! but being honest I don't really like their colour scheme!

Thanks man! I'll try looking through a codex when I get the chance! And thanks for the hint about painting yellow. Up to now I have only tried painting darker colours like green and black.(I helped my friend with his Dark Angel army) I did paint some decent models but nothing great, so that might be an issue since if I'm going to paint yellow I want the army to look great and not just a bright mess! I never painted an Ultramarine either, though I heard it's really easy. Maybe I could go with Ultramarines firsrt? Oh...by the way, is it possible to field units from two different chapters in the same game? Thanks!

Here is my recommendation: start your own chapter with your own color scheme. That way you can play whatever chapter tactics you desire. Grow a collection that can play every aspect of the codex, not just a part of it.

agreed with the above, build your own chapter. You could then use more traditional Roman colours. Use mostly Ultramarine models as they fit quite well with your theme. Easy to come up with a name for your chapter that would have a sci-fi Roman feel.

Well, Imperial Fists are cooler and are probably fluffwise better marksmen, but I'm here to say not what you should get, but what not to get. As much as I dislike with a passion, ultramarines are relatively easy to paint, and when you have an army of them they can look quite good. I would avoid black schemes live Raven Guard or Iron Hands as you could to fall into the trap of prime and play. Yellow can be hard but one of the best (strangely) to look at. White is a pain to paint.
So to answer your question. Ultramarines if you want a fast, OK looking force which is a jack-of-all-trades, or if you are willing to put the effort in, the Fists are a brilliant army and pretty good on the battlefield. Playing Crimson Fists myself, I rarely find myself doubting their capabilities to get the job done.

That's kind of tempting me though I have no idea as for the colours, I mean sure, red is 'the most' roman colour but I wouldn't want to paint them too similar to the Blood Angels...also what insignia could I use? (And thanks to all btw!!!)

(And thanks to all btw!!!) The red should be fine so long as you spot it with gold or other colors and use lots and lots of intresting pieces. 3rd party conversion ktis for shoulder pads and heads are plenty for the roman look. Learn to green stuff tabards and tassles in leather. Look around bits sites for intresting parts and kit bash like mad. as for a symbol Take a gander it seems that you can go with nearlly any type. you can even recycle the imperial eagle with no issues. Id go with the boar. terrifying things. There was a character in Fallout new vegas that ran around with a wolf hat and stuff. (probably a coyote but whatever ) like this guy Spacewolfs have tons of pelts and stuff to add details. Edit: Also a great opportunity to learn greenstuffing.

The Ultramarines are definitely most Roman, but I think you might want to make your own, as is suggested
I made this quick sketch in the online Space Marine creator, tried basing it slightly on a Roman legionnaire.
Example
However, Guilliman is known for reforming the military, kinda akin to the Marian reforms, and they really do run a massive Roman influence.

Well you certainly helped me with inspiration! Those are some great ideas! I think I'll work on that idea but for now, as I'm a newbie, I think I'll try to play it safe
Thanks a lot anyway!

Well that sucks.
Personally i found my ability to use the stuff got much better once i started using lip balm and silicon tools.
