I'm sure this is a pretty normal Viktorias list, just the Hired Swords box set and Vanessa.
At the moment it has the maximum number of soulstones with Taelor having scramble to compensate for her poor mobility and Vik of Blood having Mark of Shez'uul to make her even more killy.
Is it worth losing a few stones to get upgrades on Vik of Ashes and Vanessa?

Here are my Outcast tips:
1. (This is a general rule) Never hire more than 2 of the same thing unless you have a VERY specific plan for them. Spamming a model doesn't work well in malifaux.
2. (Another general). Strats and Schemes before list building. If you need scheme runners, Void Wretches are amazing. The crew you have right now is great for killy schemes/Reckoning. I'm assuming you're just starting out and that's why you're making this.
3. Taelor is lovely, but situational. She's great against Ressers (free charges) and construct masters. I tend to leave her at home in favor of Bishop or Ashes if I need a better all rounder (side note: NEVER take Ashes and Dust in a game where Murder Protege is in the pool, it's free VP for your opponent).
4. Vanessa is another nice model. She works well here because of all of the sisters you've got, but she really needs a construct like Lazarus nearby to shine. It's a point sink, but Lazarus with bonus mobility/free shooting is godly and otherwise, you're wasting her 0 action and not getting enough out of her.
5. Oathkeeper is your friend. Fast is amazing, powerful, and the Viks love it, especially Vanessa.
6. Upgrades:
- Synchronized Slaying is amazing. All of your sisters get + flips to attacks. Ronin now shoot like crazy, the dynamic duo is even more terrifying, and Vanessa's spells hurt badly.
- Read #5.
- Mark of Shez'uul is an auto take as well, but I see that you've got that already.
- The Howling Wolf Tattoo is nice, but mainly if you've got a nasty minion you want to adopt into the family for a turn.
- Sisters in Spirit is great for setting up the Viks Slingshot.
- I pay better (from the wave 2 Arsenal Deck) is fantastic in a crew with a lot of Mercenaries as they now all get free focus in exchange for your crap cards.
7. Other Models:
- Hannah: Put one of those sister upgrades on Henchman Vik and let Hannah copy them with her 0. Youre now saving AP on the Viks and you've got the gorgeous Hannah model on the table. Plus, she wrecks in melee and gives you a 7-card hand.
- Sue: I love sue. He's great against Peons/Totems (Hi Hungering Darkness!) and in turf war or against casters. He puts out a lot of hurt, helps your card draws, hands out burning, defends against Ca attacks, has a gorgeous ranged/melee attack, and he's Johnny Cash. Good luck finding the model though.
- Convict Gunslingers - Sue for 1 stone cheaper. Trade everything but the gun for more shootyness and damage reduction against shooting attacks. Pretty great. Disgusting in pairs.
- Desperate Mercenaries - Cheap/Okay Scheme Runners. Stick to Ronin or Void Wretches.
- Bishop: He's slow, but he absolutely wrecks in melee. Don't let him get hit though, as he lacks any defensive abilities if he's not in melee.
- Freikorps: The Librarian is great for healing. Trappers are fantastic snipers.
- Hans: Hans is okay, but expensive. If you give him the Scout the Field upgrade, he may prove himself, but don't hold your breath.
- Nix: Hamelin's Henchman. Heals whenever models fail duels around him, incorporeal, and nasty in melee. With his Hollow upgrade, you can bring Canine Remains into the Viks' warband, handing out -1 defense to enemies and they make okay scheme runners.
- Void Wretches: 4 SS, lovely scheme runners, and they're incorporeal
Hope that helps!.

Thanks.
I've hunted around for Sue, but like you say he's so popular that there are none to be had. I hope they redo his model soon.
Yes, it will be my first Malifaux team. The Outcasts factions appealed to me the most. The Viktorias have the whole "melee gods" thing going for them, and I like that.
I'll look at adding Lazarus to the team when I have the rest painted and have tried a couple of games.
I might have to get a second team to play against though. I don't know what the Malifaux scene is like here in New Zealand. A completely opposite team could be fun, how about Tara?

Most likely at Gencon (Wyrd Miniatures will be revealing the starter set (Guild (a Mental Hospital) vs Neverborn (Human-Nephilim hybrids)), the Wave 3 book (Campaign rules + new models), and every remaining crew box (Shenlong, Colette, Kaeris, Wong, Mah, Ulix, and Jack Daw), plus a lot of extras. Sue is likely to be included there.) They also do bonus miniatures for every increment of $100 or $150 you spend. There will also be a limited edition Miss (gender swap) model, and a Nightmare Edition (especially awesome version of something) box released. They also do all of this for their Black Friday sale (you can do both sales online).

I would highly recommend you join the Facebook group A Wyrd Place. It's a massive community of very friendly people. Just post and ask about New Zealand players and you should get some responses and hopefully they'll put you in touch with a Henchman (many communities have one. It's somebody that runs events/promotes the game in your area as a volunteer. Wyrd gives them perks for their services).
Tara is an awesome master (one of my favorites), but she can be very tricky to play for a new person. Misaki is a great melee master as well and is dual faction between Ten Thunders and Outcasts, so you can run her in both. Von Schill is another great Outcast master.

I do like the look of Von Schill, and his "Hired Guns" rather balance with the "Hired Swords". Automatically Appended Next Post: I just bought a Hannah from a local seller. That's one thing I'm not used to from GW, in Malifaux the prices are comparable around the world, you're not paying 50% more just because you live at the bottom of the world.

Welcome to the world of Malifaux, where the game is so cheap and the company is so nice that the once box you bought because it looked cool turns into 4 full factions...
Just wait until you decide to play Leveticus and then want some constructs or undead.

As mentioned above, you can never have enough oathkeeper! I'd put it on Blood as a minimum, and often on Taelor as well as scramble. I tend not to bother putting upgrades on Vanessa though, they don't do as much for her. The other upgrade I always take is Sisters in Fury on Ashes, minimum damage 5 for Blood ignoring almost every form of damage prevention is a wonderful thing.
I've started taking the Malifaux child over the Student of Conflict, it's another healing flip available, and if he's hanging out next to Vanessa then he can cast it on her and still heal the Viks. He also then becomes the one to cast Sisters in Fury, freeing up Ashes to use all 3AP to hit stuff.
My list of things to add also looks fairly familiar, Bishop, Hannah, Freikorps librarian (to sub in instead of Vanessa) and Trapper, and Void wretches to scheme run.
The box set plus Vanessa is pretty solid to start, and I'd get a few games in with that before you decide what you need to add for options.

Nice! You should make a nice scenic base for him. He is a 28mm model so he will be slightly shorter than the Wyrd models. It makes him look a little stubby but it won't prevent you from running them together, especially if his base pushes him up a millimeter or so. People are different height after all. He doesn't look tiny. Just a little short. like a dude that's 160 cm.

Something to remember in Malifaux is additional height from a base doesn't really matter. Every model has a Height value and terrain has Height values. There's no guessing if a model might just be short enough to get cover. So if you find some cool bases that make your models a bit taller, go ahead.

Picked up the first edition female desperate mercenary too. Apparently not a great unit, but it's all good fun. Automatically Appended Next Post: What are your thoughts on the Malifaux Child? I was looking through an Australian company's listings and they had four of the remaining Outcast leaders, Leviticus, Hamelin, Misaki and Jack Daw, in their older metal forms for about $7-8AU each. I'm not sure what I'll do with them, but they're there if I decide to expand.

Gorgeous models. They can run schemes, but die to a stiff breeze. It's hilarious when they actually do damage though.
The Malifaux child is very situational. He copies your leader's Ca attacks with his Just Like You! ability so you really only want to take him with a leader that has good Ca attacks. Most of the Outcast masters (except Jack Daw maybe) really prefer their personal totem, or none at all. I really like running the Malifaux child with Sonnia Criid and Nicodem (he cannot summon the undead like Nico, but he can hand out fast/slow and heal undead).

Leveticus is an excellent (and very powerful) master. Rusty is his henchman. I'd highly recommend just picking up the plastic box though or waiting until Gencon (hopefully the new Ashes and Dust will be out. Ashes is an absolutely fantastic model that can be an immortal pain to deal with, but a terrible model). Plus, you don't have his essential totems (Hollow Waifs, which are vital to his playstyle) or his minions, Abominations.
Misaki can run very well without her regular box. She works wonderfully with Ronin and Convict Gunslingers.
Hamelin requires a lot of models, as he revolves around summoning rats and handing out his condition, blight, which really stacks up. He can also be incredibly boring to play with/against. I'd avoid him until you're very comfortable with the game.
Jack Daw is one of my favorite masters, but the rest of his crew isn't really out yet (you can proxy). He's very tricky though.

Okay, I grabbed Lazarus and the Freikorp Strongarm Suit as well. He'll probably fit in with Von Schill okay.
Sheesh, I'm having GW withdrawal overspending attacks at the moment. Probably, model for model, the cost is similar, but in Malifaux you only need half a dozen models for a crew.
Makes painting easier too.

Model for model Malifaux is more expensive than any GW game.
However, when you consider, in total, you're probably collecting what equals two GW boxes worth of stuff for a whole crew plus a gak ton of options, overall cost of the game is pretty low.

I guess it depends. There don't appear to be a lot of retailers here in New Zealand who stock Malifaux. Mighty Ape has some, but not the full range. I can buy Malifaux new from retailers overseas though (and it is a little more expensive than buying locally thanks to shipping) while I cannot buy GW new from British retailers like Wayland Games.
When you factor in the premium New Zealand gamers pay to buy GW models, there's not much in it. A tactical squad is $75 for 10 models, which I think is about the cheapest per model cost for Marines. From Mighty Ape the Leviticus boxed set is $60 for 9 models. It would be slightly dearer from Wayland, but they'd ship immediately while Mighty Ape has about a three week wait.

No. No they wouldn't. That's not how Wayland works. I've had 4 month waits for models from Wayland. I've never had less than a 3 week wait.
Element Games is much better in that respect, but even they are starting to take a week or two before they send the goods lately.

And if 9E is the stinker it may well be? I'll have Malifaux ready to go

You're getting about the same price as you're saying from Mighty Ape (AUD/NZD for Leviticus right now from them is $60NZD), but the shipping will be a lot faster than from Wayland. Wayland is hit and miss because their stock levels aren't accurate. GW products are the worst offenders but not the only ones. It's not uncommon for a long wait to ship simply because they listed something as in stock when it actually wasn't.

Thinking about it most of my purchases have been from Troll Trader on eBay. There's a couple of things from Wayland. A couple from a US seller. The metal Masters came from The Combat Company. I got Lazarus and the Strongarm Suit from a company in France. Hannah came from Might Ape.
Talk about international sourcing.

If you're after metals or rare models, ebay is going to be your best bet, yeah. You might find a few scattered around, but they're getting hard to find. However, if you're after new stuff, The Combat Company is pretty good. Especially if you are patient and wait for restock day, which is generally New Release day as well. They restock the entire range plus new releases.
Personally, I've used them for everything except for a gencon order (I wanted that Whickey Golem) and yesterday when I found a bloody good deal on two Black Friday models (Bayou Gremlin and Performer for $50au shipped? Yes please). TCC also stocks the official Plastcraft terrain if that's your thing.

I received the Bubba model from Hasslefree. I put him alongside the metal Rusty Alyse who came in at the same time and he's about the same height. Perhaps a little shorter but certainly within normal human variations.
A very nice model, thanks Purifier.

I am Blue/White Take The Magic Dual Colour Test - Beta today! Created with Rum and Monkey's Personality Test Generator.I'm both orderly and rational. I value control, information, and order. I love structure and hierarchy, and will actively use whatever power or knowledge I have to maintain it. At best, I am lawful and insightful; at worst, I am bureaucratic and tyrannical.

I find passive aggressive messages in people's signatures quite amusing. |
