I noticed that GW does not produce a Chapter Master model. Whatever do you all do?

The same as I do for Captains, Librarians and Chaplains: KITBASH!

SM have so much variety in the parts available that no two commanders should ever look the same. Grab a Sternguard or Vanguard box, add in some stuff from your bits box and you can get a Captain, Chapter Master, Librarian, Chaplain and full Command Squad!

Captains and Chapter Masters are pretty much interchangeable model wise. I know I use the same minis. Just pay the points, and when telling my opponents what’s what, just point out that he’s a CM today.

When I’m not using Calgar that is.

Sweet, I was actually eyeballing the Sternguard box because it looks like its pretty loaded.

I'm actually trying to build a legionarry Praetor and 2 Centurions and I think this box looks good for it.

The difference between a Captain and a Chapter Master is the same as the difference between a Chaplain and an Interrogator Chaplain, or between a Lexicanium and a Codicer, between a Sergeant and a Veteran Sergeant - Bling!

The same model, but with more added-on doo-dads, more gold paint, etc. etc. or sometimes the only difference is how many points you have available (can't afford a Vet Sarge upgrade? take it out, it's even less noticeable than the invisible Meltabombs he has).

The bulk of the SG box I picked up went into making honor guard. Frankly, my old captains are jealous of the amount of bling and detail of the vets these days. I’ve said it before: you could take a box of vanguard and sternguard vets, shake them together, and have a whole chapter’s worth of captains fall out.

Just as a follow up, I bought a Sternguard box, and not only did it solve all of my HQ needs, there's more than enough left over to pimp out some seargeants and so forth (so many friggin combi-weapons!!!).

It's an expensive box, for sure, but you do get a whole lot for it.

Forgeworld parts. Standard GW for "standard" units, Forgeworld for stand out characters.

Personally not interested in anything resin, but I know they do make some highly attractive models.

After the venerable dread kit, I think the sternguard is my favorite box. The wealth of bits in there is staggering. I’d recommend every new player pick one up, just to add so much extra flavor to your army.

I’m trying to think back to all the projects that my box went into. The bulk went into my honor guard (5 guys), but the fancy bolters went to a deathwatch squad, combis and other bits to sergeants (at least 4). The awesome helmet crest went on my bike captain. HB to a tac squad. I even made some sternguard! (2xHF, c-melta, and a sarge). Obviously other bits were used for a lot of these, but the SG box was key to all.

FW Parts + Sternguard Box = All the bling your sergeants and captains will ever need.

When I get all my stuff painted, I'll try to remember to post a pic or two here to show you how I ended up kitting my various dudes out (not that I'm any great painter or anything). It really is staggering the amount of useful bits in this box. I do still think its overpriced for plastic goo that shoots in a mold, but compared to what I'm normally getting at $50 list price these days, its amazing, and they're such good sculpts, too!

I get you, having bought directly from FW in the past I wasn't keen on the amount of flash / injection overflows, though I usually get individual parts from eBay sellers, who have usually removed the worst of it for me. I do find resin easier to file down compared.to plastic, though that could be down to technique compared.to any benefit.of resin over plastic.
