Hiya all,
Not played any games for quite awhile due to family and work but recently picked up Space Marine in the Steam sale and remembered how much I used to love first person shooters (not that SM was that great, but was nice and atmospheric). Currently play mechwarrior on one but looking for a single player adventure. I've not really kept up to date with what's come out in recent years and I was hoping peeps could recommend something as funds are tight and don't want to waste any dosh.
Looking for something simple, favourite old games were half life, fear, and deuce ex. So defiantly atmospheric scifi, rather than realistic simulators with complex controls. Not hugely fussed about modernism or graphics.
Any help appreciated, cheers.

Does not take itself seriously, but lots of fun.

Republic Commando - Fantastic FPS, even if you know nothing about the Star Wars universe.

Borderlands 1/2 - Both games are pretty awesome, 1 being less refined than it's later counterpart but certainly just as good. The dialogue has got to be some of the funniest I've ever heard.

Bioshock 1/2/3 - The first Bioshock was amazing for me, the story, the gameplay, it all worked so well. The second, less so, but I played it just to see the setting from another aspect. Infinite (3) was just as good, if not better than the first one - albeit pretty confusing story wise.

Half-Life (any) - This series is my favorite, bar none. Certainly able to get them on the cheap too given their age, I highly recommend them.

F.E.A.R. 2

A sort of supernatural horror FPS. It helps if you've played the first one and its expansions for the backstory, but not required.

There is not this idea.

Jedi Knight 2: Outcast and Jedi Academy are both fun, and they have lightsaber combat! Jedi Academy is often considered the lesser of the two, but I think there's still a lot of fun to be had there.

Second the calls for borderlands. Great dialogue, awesome world and plots, fun, and loot like diablo. What's not to love ?

Just no.

Borderlands is closer to a diablo than fps. FPS likes handcrafted combat scenarios with careful balancing while diablo likes linear progression of power in slaughter arenas. BL is a great example why rpg mechanics and fps dont mix.

fear 2 is like a bad (aka console game) fear 1.

Bioshocks and republic commando are console games, avoid like plague.

I'd recommend fear 1, quake 1&2, brutal doom (original dooms are pretty outdated), left 4 dead 2, hl 1&2, stalker cop (soc is ok too but cop is almost strictly better), crysis (you need to cheat yourself more suit power).

Every time I hear "in my opinion" or "just my opinion" makes me want to strangle a puppy. People use their opinions as a shield that other poeple can't critisize and that is bs.

If you can't defend or won't defend your opinion then that "opinion" is bs. Stop trying to tip-toe and defend what you believe in.

FEAR 1 looks like mud though, and FEAR 2 exists on both consoles and PC.

Borderlands or Buttstallion will curb stomp you. If you need further reasons, look up Mr. Torgue.

If you're up for something a bit older then I suggest Clive Barker's Undying:

FEAR 2 also has inferior atmosphere.
FEAR 1 had an eerie atmosphere that kept you on your toes. FEAR 2...didn't.
The best part of FEAR 2 was that part in the school, other than that it was a fairly generic shooter.

Better to have no taste than to have gak taste.

This is what you think is good:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dLYMKW3TBOc

You basically enter a room (with little to no cover, aka gak level design 101) and shoot the AI which is completely static. Guns dont have kick or puch to them. It's like call of duty but worse.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l_u18_BKczg
Id rather play call of duty than watch that shield regeneration ever again and Id rather put babies in the oven rather than play call of duty.

Blacklight: Retribution.

Most of the game reviews are a bit old for it though, but this one is pretty in depth, as totalbiscuit usually is (his one good feature):

EYE is among the more fun FPS's I've played. It's basically Dark Heresy the game (totally not Warhammer 40k, no seriously...) and along with being exceptionally cheap, it's crazy fun. You can do thing like make people explode into a pack of werewolves, launch yourself over fifty feet into the air and quickscope enemies, hack the implants of enemies and force them upon their fellows, slash people apart with an exploding katana, or get hacked by doors.

It's kinda hard to describe, but it is an incredible amount of fun.

Yeah, the plethora of content and mechanical depth in EYE doesn't make up for it having one of the most counter-intuitive UI's in gaming history.

EDIT- Also, gotta love how many people didn't read the OP. OP says some of his favorite shooters are half-life and fear, and asks for SP shooters; people reccommend Half Life, Fear and Backlight.

Come on brehs.

Meh.

Most first person shooters are multi-only these days, sadly. And most of the ones that have a single player campaign, the campaign is barely ten hours at most, often half that.

I guess they could look at the Metro series, Dishonored, the Bioshock series, Duke Nukem Forever, etc. There just aren't that many good quality shooters with good quality single players.

So, nobody agreeing about Shadow Warrior? Nobody else played it, or did you find it bad?

I am still confused. How is Borderlands 1 and 2 not a FPS?

But, I will say Borderlands 1 and 2 are great games. Great FPS games even. As well as Republic Commando, although that is dated.

This reminds me, Section 8 and Section 8 Prejudice were bloody awesome shooters right till the multiplayer got shut down- damn shame. The two Section 8 games were among the best multiplayer FPS's I've ever played.

I dropped Pillars of eternity after about 20 hours. Got utterly bored by it. Divinity was far more enjoyable for me. So no, Pillars doesn't beat it for me. The writing and gameplay of Wolfenstein were just amazing.

PIllars is terrible. Between the bad writing.(I still don't care for a single element of the story, let alone the characters in it), the lack of explanations. and other things, it was an experience that really wasn't worth the money I spent on it.

That's why I recommended FEAR 2. He said he liked the series, but did not say whether or not he'd played the second one (the original has like 147 expacs, that's enough content for some to say "I'm good for now"). FEAR2 is a 1P FPS that continues the story of Alma and the FEAR team, as it happens semi-concurrently with the events of the first game.
