Subject: Getting back into the hobby. What are all these new 'armies'?
So I recently decided that because I was gonna get a job over the summer and have more money and time on my hands, that this would be a great time to get back into the hobby. I probably stopped about a year ago, just after dark vengeance and all that jazz came out, and a lot has changed since then. It's all a bit overwhelming, with all these new armies being added and the changing of the names of races. I'm not quite sure how to begin getting back in and expanding my Tau. So can someone further explain all the changes that have been made in the year I've been gone? What changes am I missing? And what about the new armies? Any help would be great thanks.

Lots of stuff whizzing round over your head, Imperials all ride the same short bus, Eldar have apocalyptic weaponry on basic guys and Necrons never die.
Pretty much it. Best way to learn the nuances of seventh is by playing the game - as Tau, you won't have to worry about the biggest change, the Psychic Phase.

Not necessarily Space Marines but rather IoM (except for Harlequins) as there are Skitarii, Cult Mechanicus (both Ad Mech), Legion of the Damned Imperial Knights and Millitarum Tempestus

SM and loyalist armies havent changed except with the introduction of the Adeptus Mechanicus. And they're just loyalist counterpart to the best Mechanicus in the game which is the Dark Mechanicus because Loyalists wanted dinobots of their own.
If you don't play a shooting heavy army, you will hate the hobby and most likely put your gaming nights on hiatus indefinitely again like I have. I played Eldar, and the whole Chaos Faction with nearly 15k points of Daemons alone and another ~6k points of CSM. My eldar have shrunk since the buff to their Codex and the Gargantuan change to the Wraithknight simply due to the constant slap to the face and kick to the groin of my Chaos Faction and fellow Chaos players. Why was the Bloodthirster not a Gargantuan? Why are Daemon Princes still not EW? Why do more and more Chaos Daemon units get introduced that fill in roles that simply aren't needed? We dont need different Bloodthirsters... We need Bloodthirsters that don't suck
GW is intent of turning their game into a sort of payed subscription where if you aren't playing the "In" you aren't having fun and you are wasting your time.
In short, play what you think you'll enjoy, usually that means to most people, playing the best army out there and that would be Eldar. If you want to collect, collect what you want, but don't expect to win against anyone other than other collectors.

Gah! "Fresh Meat!" in the 40k realm.
Ask someone to loan you the "fluff book" that comes with the 7th edition rule book and the background will get filled in.
Dare I try the brief history of 40k?
Spoiler:
First there were Eldar, they ran the place all was well.
A formerly mortal race of Necrons were given a deal by some god-like beings the C'tan for immortality which was a trick of turning them into machines and allowed the C'tan to snack on their souls.
C'tan / Necrons / Eldar fought for a very long time.
C'tan got thumped, Necrons decided to rest for a quite a few centuries.
Some Eldar got "Dark" due to partying it up too much and getting all sadistic in the webway (hyperspace tunnels), other more puritan Eldar decided to make some space faring planets and decided to leave. At some point the remaining eldar partied too hard and created the Daemon God Slanesh who then ate most of their souls and left a big tear in reality. The two Eldar groups that hid in the web or got far enough away survived.
Somewhere in all this was the Emperor of Man who was the closest thing to a living god as it gets. Made space marines, populated many planets and the Slanesh birth thing messed up space travel for a long time and many planets got isolated.
He made many "sons" who became the genetic template for each space marine legion. Somehow the various warp gods decided this would not do and scattered these sons or "primarchs" all over the universe (they are tricky that way).
Due to the increased psionic ability of humanity, gods form in the hyperspace/warp of Khorn, Nurgle, Slanesh, Tzeenitch.
Warp storms decrease, emperor hunts down his sons and reconquers the various lost worlds.
#1 son gets corrupted by evil gods and almost kills dad who is put on golden throne life support but not before son is thumped.
Marines who made poor choices become an angry type as CSM and fly off into the warp to mutate and pull wings off flies.
Marines, space army, navy all go through a big restructure to prevent rebellion again.
So we are at this point today:
Daemons: If something bad happens, they may rip through the warp and party too much hurting all kinds of people.
CSM: Are very angry and come out of hiding and try to thump various planets.
Grey Knights: Are a special group made especially for fighting anything daemonic, can thump other enemies for fun.
Inquisition: Are the really high up bad-guy thumpers of the imperium, think CIA and FBI with little oversight.
Space Marines: The Elite genetically modified supermen that wear fancy powersuits and guns that shoot bullets that explode. They are so powerful they are supposed to be in groups no bigger than 1000. They come in many flavors. They are the fast and dirty fist of the Imperium.
Imperial Guard / Astra Militarum: The HUGE grunt army with much hardware for war and some siphoned off for planetary defense.
Eldar: Fancy harmonious race of the cosmos. Still think they own the place. They realize they are dying off but think those that remain will make it a bad place. They like messing with the potential future and figure humans are like vermin... nice guys.
Dark Eldar: These guys live off of suffering, quite literally. Slaves, torture, poison, might makes right... S&M all rolled into being a happy bunch.
Necrons: Ancient old machine people, woke up after a long nap and figured most life that has corrupted the universe needs to be killed off.
Tyranids: Evolving bug race with a hive mind that has the #1 rule to EAT. Entire planets I might add. Came out of the very far off and dark limits of the universe, and more are coming.
Orks: They spawn from spores like fungus but they are walking/grunting/green/angry balls of fighting fun. Technology encoded into their genes to make them self sufficient and space-faring and hardy in the extreme. They "cheerfully" fight and live for it. Survival of the fittest in the most extreme sense.
Tau: A brand new race, all about technology and everyone in their place. Robots and power suits with big guns are the norm. One of the more "good" races if there are any to be had.
Mechanicus: Engineers that became a cult. As much chanting as building stuff. Really messed up guys but they make the Imperium of man work and nobody knows how to mess with an enemy target better than these guys.
Imperial Knights: The initial guardians of new colonies. They "merge" with a giant walking robot that is designed to protect his people against all threats. Think a giant Knight of old.

Yea I know a fair chunk of lore already, but thanks for the effort talizvar. I'm just gonna enjoy collecting and painting and occasionally playing when I get the chance, 'cos painting is where the fun is at for me mainly. And the 7th edition rulebook is definitely number one on my list.

Imperial Knights and Adeptus Mechanicus are the only really "New" armies to the game, everyone else is what they are and pretty much what they've always been

Astro Militariwhateveridontcarejustgiveusatrademark: guard
Adeptus Asshatartus: Space Marines
Adeptus Sororitybabes: Sisters
Militarium Tesdosteronis: Stormtroopers
Adeptus Mechanicus Skiitari and Cult Mechanicus: one army for the price of two, thank you greedy GW. They're Techpriests
Harlequins: Eldar/Dark Eldar mini-faction of the space clowns.
Imperial Knights: You know how fun it was when some donkey-cave decided to bring his Titan to a regular non-apocalypse game? Yeah....they're an army for that....
Quick translation guide for ya GW had a little bed wetting session a while ago because someone told them they couldn't copyright every single word in their books. Apparently some guy named George had a copyright on "Stormtroopers" and "Imperial."
"Got you, Yugi! Your Rubric Marines can't fall back because I have declared the tertiary kaptaris ka'tah stance two, after the secondary dacatarai ka'tah last turn!"
"So you think, Kaiba! I declared my Thousand Sons the cult of Duplicity, which means all my psykers have access to the Sorcerous Facade power! Furthermore I will spend 8 Cabal Points to invoke Cabbalistic Focus, causing the rubrics to appear behind your custodes! The Vengeance for the Wronged and Sorcerous Fullisade stratagems along with the Malefic Maelstrom infernal pact evoked earlier in the command phase allows me to double their firepower, letting me wound on 2s and 3s!"
"you think it is you who has gotten me, yugi, but it is I who have gotten you! I declare the ever-vigilant stratagem to attack your rubrics with my custodes' ranged weapons, which with the new codex are now DAMAGE 2!!"
"...which leads you straight into my trap, Kaiba, you see I now declare the stratagem Implacable Automata, reducing all damage from your attacks by 1 and triggering my All is Dust special rule!"

OP: Imperial Knights seem to be the byword for someone being "mean" fielding those.
As a model though, it is hard to resist: it is mighty fine looking.
The Mechanicus / Skitarii have a great deal of flexibility due to their army rules but are so new people may label them as overpowered but not many people have faced them yet.
I am in the process of putting these guys together and trying to figure out how to fit them in without getting opponents all excited in the wrong way.

Also, there is now Khorne Daemonkin, which everyone seems to forget about. Basically what you get when you mash together all the Khorne units from Chaos Space Marines and Chaos Daemons, and take out most of their special characters and add some Bloodthirster variants. They're sort of neat, but not overly scary like some of the other new stuff out there.
Battle formations are new.
If you fufill the criteria of the formation (X number of units)
You get some sweet army buffs
E.g the War congrefation for CultMech,Skitarii and imperial knihts is good as all plasma weapons do not have gets hot!
