Do you guys think it's necessary to buy two starter boxes? I'll be playing Imperials and maaaybe sell off the Rebel stuff (to mitigate the cost).

I would say no. In my opinion, you would better off buying the starter set and the individual ships as you see fit.

Yeah, just 1 starter. I have 2 starters and regret it a bit.

I have 2 starters, no regrets whatsoever (especially keeping in mind the standard game size will increase by 100 pts once wave 2 drops, meaning 3 victorys and 12 tie fighters + upgrades becomes a viable build), however you will still need to buy the ship blisters for the cards, etc.

When I planned my Armada purchases, I went with a "one of everything" strategy initially thinking it would give me enough variety to make fleets for both sides. However I've already violated that rule with an additional Assault Frigate and fighter packs for both sides. I'm probably going to pick up another Gladiator as well. I think if you just pick up one core set you'll be all right because you can supplement your collection with individual ship packs to fill in any holes you might find.

Just one, once you get all the expansions you'll have plenty of ships, even for larger games.

Because there's some fun cards in the expansion boxes that I'll have to find high res images of, then print out on cardstock. Otherwise I'll have 3 of each ship save for the AFmk2. On the other hand, I just made some fun lists with 3 nebulons or 3 CR90s. So it's not all bad.
I am basically the owner of my gaming group's Armada collection, so when we play, I just bring everything. But for someone who just wants an army for himself, buying everything so many times over is not a good idea.

A friend of mine and I decided to split the cost of two starter sets. I took the Imperial, and he took the rebel, and we each got a set of dice and tokens, etc.
But now that I want the cards that come with the VSD, I feel like it's unnecessary to have a third, and wish I had just bought a starter for myself and a VSD, and sold someone the rebel ship models.
Although as someone mentioned, at 400 points it might be fun to take 3 VSDs, so I don't think it'll be that bad in the end.

I've played some 400 point games now, and it'll be a fun standard value. More than enough points to get a nice mix of ships, upgrades, and squadrons. But, also a lot more to manage.
Plus, more stuff happens within the 6 turn limit of most games, and its easier to take some losses and have enough to dish out losses in return.
3 VSDs are actually fun and thematic to use, very tough to crack. But the cost for 3 VSD2s to have best gun coverages leaves you lacking upgrades and squadrons. Dropping down to VSD1s means you have to be hellishly aggressive to make sure you make use of the black dice. But that's easier to justify when you have 3 VSDs.
Best way to deal with 3 VSDs is to take a mission where that much concentrated firepower isn't as useful.

I went with 2 starters, one of every blister from the starter ships (to get the additional cards), and 2 of everything else (except Imperial Fighters only got one, because my LGS had sold out of their extras). No regrets at all. I like having things to loan out. Will probably go with 2 each again with wave 2 and beyond.

Well I'm not looking to spend more than say $150-200 on my fleet, so it's safe to say I won't be buying one of everything. Doing that would put it up there with a full GW army in terms of cost.

Considering how ridiculously cheap starter boxes can be, I see little downside to buying two. If you intended to buy another set of dice and more TIE fighters at some point, it's often cheaper to just get another starter set.

I would say no unless you really like those ships. Buying the individual ships and fighter upgrade pack gives you additional cards and upgrades, plus better options.
|
If you dont short hand your list, Im not reading it.
Example: Assault Intercessors- x5 -Thunder hammer and plasma pistol on sgt.
or Assault Terminators 3xTH/SS, 2xLCs
For the love of God, GW, get rid of reroll mechanics. ALL OF THEM! |
