One Canoptek Scarab in a Swarm

Overlord, Warriors, Immortals, Ghost Ark, Tomb Blades.
Now you have the base for a reclamation legion of a decurion detachment. From there you can look at the different formations to find your tastes.

There's really nothing bad in the Necron codex, you can largely use whatever and be successful.
A lot depends on how you want to build the army. If you want to build a Decurion, your army list largely builds itself.
That said, Wraiths are about as auto-pilot-to-win as you can get, I don't see very many Necron armies without these just because they ignore so much stuff (terrain, morale, etc) and are absurdly resilient against both quality and quantity of fire.

IRON WITHIN, IRON WITHOUT.
New Heavy Gear Log! Also...Grey Knights!
The correct pronunciation is Imperial Guard and Stormtroopers, "Astra Militarum" and "Tempestus Scions" are something you'll find at Hogwarts. |

Warriors, Warriors, Immortals, Monolith, C'Tan.
...sorry, wrong edition.
I'd avoid C'Tan, Monoliths, and Flayed Ones until you've built up a sizeable army. They can work, but you need to know what you're doing and how to use them with everything else.
Start with two boxes of Warriors, and anything that can be used as an Overlord. That's legal using the CAD, and is halfway to being a Decurion (the formation that almost all Necron players use). If you want to go the Decurion route, get hold of a box of Immortals and Tomb Blades. After that, I'd recommend some Wraiths, but anything beyond that is up to you, really. Warriors x 2, Overlord, Immortals, Tomb Blades, Wraiths.

Changing Our Legion's Name

For all around nastiness your best bet is to go Decurion, so first everything that goes in the Reclamation Legion; Warriors, an Overlord, Immortals, and Tomb Blades. Then you have a lot of good options to play with as your secondary Formation as the Decurion is built up from Formations.
I'd highly recommend trying out both the Destroyer Cult and the Judicator Battalion, very elite and killy with some nasty rules, as previously stated Canoptek Harvests (Wraiths, Scarabs and Spyders) work very well too because they're great at Tarpitting and refuse to go down easily.
I'd only really stay away from C'tan, their new powers are too random to use effectively, Flayed ones while they can work well aren't recommended all that highly.
I personally like to take 10 Lychguard with Sword and Shield in the Reclamation Legion and slap the Overlord in with them, that's a hard unit to shift off anything, 3++ save with 4+ RP re-rolling 1's is just nasty

This. A decurion detachment is a good choice in the first place.
Then I'd add a Canoptek Harvest formation with 1 Spyder, 3 Scrabs, and 6 Wraiths.
