Simple way to identify dead and wounded, add em up and that's known dead, compare vs known wounded and the rest is roughly what and who you have left.

Sgt. Vanden - OOC Hey, that was your doing. I didn't choose to fly in the "Dongerprise'.

I have no clue how Dakka's moderation work. I expect it involves throwing a lot of d100 and looking at many random tables.

FudgeDumper - It could be that you are just so uncomfortable with the idea of your chapters primarch having his way with a docile tyranid spore cyst, that you must deny they have any feelings at all.

How do you know the number of the known dead? That company over there was tasked with assaulting a heavily fortified machine gun position. There are bodies piled on top of each other and many limbs thrown about. How do you know the number? Count the bodies? Then count the bodies missing an arm or leg? Then count the arms and legs to make sure that you didn't miss a body? What if there is an extra arm? Who's arm is it?

Why not just go around and pull the tags off the dead? Dog tags also have an individuals blood type on it, which would be absolutely imperative provided they haven't figured out a universal blood type thing that is in large enough quantities to provide to everyone.

Medical Tech in the IG is.... pretty dour, for the most part.

It is best to be a pessimist. You are usually right and, when you're wrong, you're pleasantly surprised.

Can we be sure that they are intended for identification purposes? What if they just contain a little prayer to the Emperor?

In universe it's probably a cultural thing, like their red bandanas and knives which act as their tombstones. In Pandorax, Straken always collects fallen comrades' knives and bandanas for their massive cemetery.

However, the idea behind it is to make them reminiscent of Vietnam War-era Americans.

They need dog tags so they can be identified and recorded in case of disciplinary meassures.
