I've been trying to prepare for a 750 pt league game against Necrons and I've been eyeing the formation. The problem is I'm fairly new and limited on models but I do have the models to bring 2 helcults.

So is fearless/zealot and the special save on the helbrute worth the 218 pts to field the formation?

At 750pts, no. Because these aren't your two Troops choices for the rest of your army. So on top of the Helcult, which has a Helbrute and those things are friggin dookie, you need two troops for your CAD, limiting the actually good stuff you can take.

Now, taking Ferrum Infernus Dreadnought with the 4th Quadrant Rebellion Legacy of Ruin, that can be worth it, making the Cultists Fearless, still Troops and getting a Dread that you can actually friggin control, I've done that when I started Chals and it worked pretty well for the couple of games before I replaced it.

Where do the dreadnaught and rebellion rules come from?

All I have is the CSM codex and the helbrute dataslate.

Oops. I even thought about including that and friggin spaced...

Imperial Armour 13. A Forge World book. Has really amazing Chaos stuff in there. Pricey, but worth it, and the best thing about the Ferrum Infernus is that you don't need to buy a different model. Forge World has better Dreadnoughts, but a normal Helbrute works just fine.

If you put a lascannon on it and bubble wrap it with shooty cultists, and maybe join a warpsmith to it they might do alright.

A helcult formation is actually pretty good. at 750 pts though. It can go either way. On the upside, you get fearless cultists. On the downside, You still need to fill your CAD since the cultists of the formation wont be part of that.

You can take advantage of the fearless though and blob the enemy. Take a shooty helbrute with a LC and ML, wrap him with 10 cultists with auto guns. They will provide the cover save and help keep the helbrute from going crazy. On the other side of the field, run a 35 man strong blob with flamers and like. They're part of the formation, so they're fearless without a lord or apostle as a babysitter. They are also cheap at only 165pts for 35 bodies with standard load out and 3 flamers.

As long as you can fill the rest of your CAD with things to support them. Like AC havocs, MoN Spawn, or maybe a heldrake, you'll do alright. It's gonna be tight at 750 pts, but it's not impossible.

"Because we couldn't be trusted. The Emperor needed a weapon that would never obey its own desires before those of the Imperium. He needed a weapon that would never bite the hand that feeds. The World Eaters were not that weapon. We've all drawn blades purely for the sake of shedding blood, and we've all felt the exultation of winning a war that never even needed to happen. We are not the tame, reliable pets that the Emperor wanted. The Wolves obey, when we would not. The Wolves can be trusted, when we never could. They have discipline we lack, because their passions are not aflame with the Butcher's Nails buzzing in the back of their skulls.

The Wolves will always come to the heel when called. In that regard, it is a mystery why they name themselves wolves. They are tame, collared by the Emperor, obeying his every whim. But a wolf doesn't behave that way. Only a dog does.

That is why we are the Eaters of Worlds, and the War Hounds no longer."

I love them.

Fearless and the ability to protect helbrutes from enemy fire is fun/useful.

But then I'm running an actual cultist coven themed army (I use Crimson slaughter rules/fluff as a basis) in which the cultists worship daemon engines as living embodiments of their master's power. So I have no issue buying more cultists to fill the two compulsory troop choices.

In my army I field autogun cultist units as "standard" cult units.

All my close combat cultists represent cultists driven to madness and formed into Helcult formations. From an army fluff perspective my Dark apostle has indoctrinated the cultists to believe the daemon engines (defilers and helbrutes) are living embodiments of the gods they now worship and their dark power manifest. In effect Helcult cultists are the extremist zealots of my cult; chosen to die protecting the revered helbrutes if called on to do so.

Those cultists that become zealously devoted and driven to be insane, frothing madmen are then given a pistol and pointy stick and sent forward to murder the enemy and protect the helbrutes.

I love chaos...

I might have to play with some lists with them once the league gets to bigger points
