I'm just getting into the hobby with a few of my friends. Are there any suggestions for making a game table with minimal materials that can be vaguely interesting and cover different terrain types and have cover like a good board?

Get a box or two, plus some cheap plasti card and make a bunch of small ruins and buildings, just one story each, scatter them around the table.

Before too long you might have a whole city ready to go.

Add some 1/43 or 1/35 scale diecast cars, bang them up and paint them a dull color. They can provide some low cover or flip them on the side for something higher.

If you're looking cheaper but more work, a $5 sheet of foam core+a razor blade can make just about any sort of wall or building you need.

Maelstrom's Edge has a useful little terrain spure coming to dress up all those flat surfaces.

And print out some WWII propeganda posters (or some 40k spoofs of them) to glue over everything.

Also look at getting some blue insulation foam and a good hot wire cutter, it can them be shaped into all sort of interesting rock formations.

Rocks.

Find interesting rocks of different sizes, maybe use plaster/spackel to put them on bases, maybe not.

Done.

You get a roll of fabric pretty cheap (green for grass, grey for city-scape)
Then search the web for card cut out scenery (or often called papercraft) for buildings to print, cutout and glue together.

I have a 6x4 ft table, made from 3 MDF boards with brass hinges. I use a gaming mat from gamemat.eu, and terrain from GW, Pegasus (very good quality), MDF kits, some resin craters and rivers (lava theme) and layered cardboard hills.

I haven't tried anything else to be honest. The caulk holds a lot of the sand and stone down and gives some texture.
