So I finally decided to restart my space marines after around ten years. Most of my army is gone, but I still have some leftover terminators, Librarians, scouts, and a few tacticals. I'm looking at either Imperial Fist, Iron Hands, or Salamanders. All of these are my top choices, never really liked bike armies (even though I have just a bike captain) and I didn't like Ultramarines before. Also, I really like librarians so Black Templars are a big no no. Raven Guard I'm on the fence about, but seeing as I don't already have any jet pack units i highly doubt I'm going with them

Also, no forge world chapters. Not because I don't like forge world, Im just trying to keep it simple for now!

Further info: My army will be allied with a small IG army, which is really just a mass wave of expendable bodies. No IG vehicles.

I picked IH. They are a strong resilient force with access to a good supplement that buffs the force.

If I went with SM I'd probably pick the Imperial Fists. I love the bold yellow army look. Really eye catching.

I've played Blood Angels off and on since 1998, but I've had doubts about my choice since the new codex dropped. A friend of mine gave me some advice on choosing a chapter I found very helpful. Once you find your Primarch you'll know what chapter to build. For me it was Vulkan.

I would suggest painting test models in each of the three color schemes first. You don't want to commit to Imperial Fists only to realise you hate painting yellow halfway through your first squad.

with the new dex out the imperial fists have taken a huge boost to their chapter tactics.

combined with the tactical doctrine you get from fielding a demi company, this will give you basically a turn of re-rolls and then all your bolters re roll 1s (including special ammunition from sternguard).

that last point is a new feature in the new dex which is awesome because you can use vengeance rounds and re roll your gets hot!

you dont have to paint the chapter of the tactics your using. if you create your own chapter you can use which ever ones you want.

it says it in the codex, which means you can interchange based on the army your fielding and what you want to try out!

I picked iron hands, since you said the guardsmen are expendable bodies.

Which is how the Iron Hands view everyone who isn't a space marine, or is a space marine from the Raven Guard/Salamanders Chapters.

Ninjaf is right. Create your own chapter unless you're set on playing one of the originals. You can also pick a chapter from an unknown founding. Being able to change CT without feeling like you are dishonoring your chapter is priceless.

If you want one of the originals, I have to cast my vote for my boys in yellow. Get some sternguards asap.

If you're talking about looks then go on the wahammer wiki to see the less known chapters. if not then game wise i would go with the imperial fists, they have great lore and lysander will go great with your termi squads.

Sallies in Drop Pods. Pop the enemy vehicles on the drop so only bodies remain, that way your IG don't run into tanks they can't pop. The pressure this will put on most armies is insane.

So I think I'm going to just go with a "Successor" chapter, and switch of my chapter tactics on the fly. My tactic is going to be drop pod assault I think, so it works with all of them.

Thanks for your help everybody!

Well IH would be a great addition because they can bring the best SM armour, but they might not be interested in helping fleshy guardsmen. Salamanders on the other hand are a good fluffy fit and they have decent tactics. Fists can also be a good fluffy fit, but they want to bring Devastators and bolters, so that might clash a bit with your IG tactics.

I am gonna say go with the Salamanders, simple because they are the best fluff fit.

Also, don't discount the RG just because you lack jump packs. They can do great without them as their CT doesn't really do a whole lot except make jump infantry more mobile. You could stick with your current theme of all infantry and have some really durable Marines for a turn. Though admittedly RG probably have the least fluffy CTs, and their crunch is sub-par now.

So I changed my mind, and It looks like I'm going with Iron hands for the conversion-ability! I want to make a unique looking force, and this seems like a good way to do so!

Iron Hands get 6+ FNP ir +1 to FNP if they already have it so command/chapter master star got better for free.
+IWND on dreadnoughts and characters is pretty good too.

Why do folks always pick established Space Marine chapters and not come up with one of their own. I have.

The main advantage of using an existing chapter is the availability of outside resources. Like Forgeworld rhino doors and shoulder pads, Black Library stories, etc.

Maybe its because they like the fluff of those chapters? Then like Crimson Devil pointed out, established Chapters have modeled bits making them easier to make.
