Yeah, very far from the most impressive 40k art. Unless that's a too-subtle dig at 7th edition having some lackluster illustration, in which case, umm, a little too subtle.

Well yes, I dont even know how that picture was allowed into the codex.
As for subtle, I thought the choice of words sells it enough but it's the internet and probably the fact that I see the picture as completly pathetic made it more obvious in my head than how it came out.
Anyway I really really hate and despise some of the 7th edition art, even 6th edition one was times better not to say earlier editions.

No.
Pathetic?
That's a little harsh.
I do miss a lot of the black and white sketch art in the codex though. Seemed to add grit to it.

Im aware that I insult someone somewhere and Im sorry but that's my honest opinion and that person should be told that it's not really the level of painting that goes into 50$ equivalent book.
Screen captured from space marine game would look better. Photo of a model with post process would look better. Anything but a strawberry legion.

Oh, I agree. The art that's been going into the books lately has struck me as a lower quality. I just thought that pathetic was a pretty harsh term.

I'd give anything to go back just to 6th Edition Art. It wasn't quite 3rd Ed levels, but damn did it look badass for Chaos. The gore didn't help either.

Yes I looked at 6th edition dinobots picture and man does it look good in comparision with the new stuff. I was angry then (6th) that the art lacks the vicious edge of old stuff but I sure appreciate it now.

The Harlequin codex had some good pieces in it... but ye, overall flipping through these new dexes makes me miss the black and white days >_<
Anyhow, speaking of art, are the artists credited anywhere in the codecii? Because I can't seem to find the names of the artists anywhere. Anyone got any pointers on how to find out?
@Asherian:
Considering the quality of that piece, it's not all that tragic - that's a stunnnnnnnnnning picture.
EDIT: Hm? Looking at that guys deviant art, he seems to have done a lot of work FOR games workshop, so I'm not sure that's a great argument for fan art being better.

I am rather partial to the paintings that appear in the Forgeworld books; it worked especially well for the Siege of Vraks where they evoked some of the war artists from WW1. It certainly doesn't work for everything but it has a certain appeal

For sure it is epic - I don't like the proportions of the right arm though - it is too small. Plus also, the wraith surely looks like hes not giving a feth about point blank bolts to his chest.

What reaaaaaaaaaaaalllllllyy bothers me about 7th edition art is how every piece of artwork has to a) Be of the models GW is selling and b) be in the official colour scheme from 'Eavy Metal.
The Mechanicus codex is a particularly serious offender in this regard. Because the codex has only five units (Kataphron, Dominus, Electro-Priest, Baymax and Datasmith) they're repeated in every. single. piece. of. art. The Kastellans in particular are jarring as they don't fit the aesthetic at al. The Cult mech codex should have been full of weird, Blanchian monstrosities- all artwork to date has
portrayed the Mech as singularly contemptuous of repetition in their war-creations, instead we're bludgeoned with essentially ads for the GW kits. It's no longer art, it's advertistment.
The art should inspire and suggest and hint, like in 2nd and 3rd and 4th and 5th. Post-Chapterhouse, it just annoys.
Don't get me started on the horrible art in the new DA...

Um, it's a Wraith. It's also based on the original piece from the 3rd ed. Necron codex, originally starring a Black Templar.

As Grimtuff points out, its a Wraith. They probably are passing straight through it without it noticing. They're intangible until they have their blades inside you, at which point they become solid for just long enough to inflict horrific internal damage and exit wounds - why did you think they had a 3++ and Rending natively?
