I've recently gotten into the hobby and have decided on the Astra Militarum/Imperial Guard as my army of choice.
First, I'm planning on using a Pask'd Vanquisher, what sponsons, if any would be useful on this Russ? I was thinking of Heavy Bolters for a general defense, and they get nice bonuses from Pask.
Second, do I need the Pask model or can I proxy in the standard tank commander that comes with a Leman Russ?
Third is a Pask Vanquisher a good duo/choice ?
Vanquishers are good with a hull lascannon, just for a second S9 shot they don't really need sponsons because they sit back and pop things, bury them behind an Aegis.
Most people are sold on the pask/punisher atm, but the pask/vanq is a great tank imo... I wouldn't run a vanq without a commander or a pask tho, just to warn you! BS3 with one shot is not good, theres a reason why codex AM is full of blast and multi shot weapons.
Before you build anything, buy some magnets and look for tutorial on how to magnetize sponsons.
Then look for the Armored Battlegroup list from Forge World.
If you still want to stick to the main Codex I can say that Vanquishers are very lackluster with BS3.
You shouldn't be worried about the one bullet with your name on it, Boldric. You should be worried about the ones labelled "to whom it may concern"-from Blackadder goes Forth!
I like the idea of a Vanquisher, but since the vehicle damage tables have made it harder to get that one-shot, destroyed result, they can be pretty disappointing. I'd never field one without BS4: the cost-benefit at BS3 is pretty atrocious. As for repping Pask, you don't need the official model. Anything that distinguishes the command tank from your other tanks is sufficient: a decal, a painted stripe, an extra antenna, etc. Hell, simply pointing at a random tank and saying "this is pask" is good enough for most people

I have a single guardsman equipped with a shovel and a flag that I use to mark the command tank. Works pretty well.
Pask is.... Pricey.
For a total of 70 points (He is a 40 point upgrade to a 30 point character) you get some negligible bonuses, although the rending on the Punisher is pretty sweet.
As for Vanquishers: These are in dire need of a buff, something like +3/4 on the damage table. As it is run them with a coaxial Heavy Stubber (Imperial Armour Book 2 Volume 2, Imperial Guard Armoured Company) with a tank commander (BS4) and artificer armour and relic plating. Keep well back and remember to take beast hunter shells.

Seriously, the only thing worth putting Pask in specifically is the punisher. Beyond that the regular tank commander works fine.
For a Vanq, I would pair him with another long range sit-back style Russ, maybe a Battlecannon or the ignores cover one. Give Joe expendable Camo netting and stick him in front of the commander.
Now the reason the punisher is so popular despite it's risky 24" effective range is: the damn thing kills anything. I'm not exaggerating-a Paskisher causes 4 HP average to an AV14 tank face, or 9 AP2 wounds to anything with a toughness value. That's really rare in the AM codex. Usually AM is a blunt force weapon. If your opponent plays rock, other armies say "aha, paper!" AM says "Oh yeah? ROCK ROCK ROCK ROCK ROCK ROCK you dead yet?"
Lasguns, stormshards, Lascannons, Battlecannons, all the standard AM wargear is just brute force equipment. Your opponent invests into defensive stats, they'll probably get their money's worth for them. So having something that ignores a lot of that defensive stuff is a godsend for the hammer of the emperor. And god, does he do it SPECTACULARLY. I think that's the real reason people like him so much, Pask rolls a fricking bucket of dice and says "you. You are dead."
Now another option people usually miss is the Plasmacutioner. Due to how Gets Hot works on tanks most people don't take him, but preferred enemy as Pask or a Pask Pal makes him reroll the 1s he rolls for Gets Hot-lowering the odds of you losing a plasma cannon from 1/6 to 1/36.
"Got you, Yugi! Your Rubric Marines can't fall back because I have declared the tertiary kaptaris ka'tah stance two, after the secondary dacatarai ka'tah last turn!"
"So you think, Kaiba! I declared my Thousand Sons the cult of Duplicity, which means all my psykers have access to the Sorcerous Facade power! Furthermore I will spend 8 Cabal Points to invoke Cabbalistic Focus, causing the rubrics to appear behind your custodes! The Vengeance for the Wronged and Sorcerous Fullisade stratagems along with the Malefic Maelstrom infernal pact evoked earlier in the command phase allows me to double their firepower, letting me wound on 2s and 3s!"
"you think it is you who has gotten me, yugi, but it is I who have gotten you! I declare the ever-vigilant stratagem to attack your rubrics with my custodes' ranged weapons, which with the new codex are now DAMAGE 2!!"
"...which leads you straight into my trap, Kaiba, you see I now declare the stratagem Implacable Automata, reducing all damage from your attacks by 1 and triggering my All is Dust special rule!"

9 AP2 wounds? Only the turret-mounted weapon gets rending, so even with both his warlord trait and prescience that's only ~3.5 AP2 wounds. Typo, or some very nice secondary weapons/upgrades?

You don't lose the plasma cannon, just a hull point. The chance is 1/72 per shot, not 1/36.

The Eradicator isn't particularly long range. There's also the fact that it's mostly an anti-infantry tank, although that can be somewhat mitigated through using tank orders.

But you do have a 1/6 chance of losing the shot, even if you don't lose a HP.
There is no such thing as a hobby without politics. "Leave politics at the door" is itself a political statement, an endorsement of the status quo and an attempt to silence dissenting voices.
