Hey hey hey
Ever since the new (now not-so-new) vanguard veterans kit came out I hidden a couple of the boxes. Now i feel it's time to pack them out and start assembly...
But so many options makes my head explode. What should i kit them out with?
I run an Imperial Fist army so thats my chapter tactics. Any other than that i like to run 5 vanguards but i still wanna be able to surprise my husband from time to time and throw 10 at the table.
But how should i kit them?
The vet sergeant should be with relic blade right?
Since the new codex dropped i was tempted to run powerweapon on all since they only cost 5 pts. now...
But what are your experience. What to you run them with?
P.S. Please don't say they suck and dont run them since i am running them coz i have the models now.

Max out on combi-meltas with Multi-Melta for Anti-Tank.
Max out on combi-flamers for anti-infantry.
All in a drop pod.
Take a relic blade if you're going with flamers and try to get them stuck in.
Otherwise give him a combi-weapon.

3000pts Blood Angels (4th Company) - 2000pts Skitarii (Voss Prime) - 2500pts Imperial Knights (Unnamed House) - 1000pts Imperial Guard (Household Retainers)
2000pts Free Peoples (Edlynd Fusiliers) - 2000pts Kharadron Overlords (Barak Zilfin) - 500pts Ironweld Arsenal (Edlynd Ironwork Federation) - 1000pts Duardin (Grongrok Powderheads)
Wargaming's no fun when you have a plan! |

I give mine four lightning claws and the sergeant gets a power axe and storm shield.
Give them all jump packs, and at 145 points they can wreck face at high speed.

At 5 points each, I'd definitely put power weapons on all of them. I'd probably give 3 of them dual lightning claws, 1 a power maul & storm shield, and give the sgt. either a relic blade & storm shield or lightning claw & storm shield. I'd avoid power axes, thunder hammers, and power fists; they're all 3+/one wound models, so you always want them striking at initiative, and engaging light/medium infantry, not independent characters or monstrous creatures. Possibly give them all melta bombs so that they can also threaten tanks.

I run IF as well. I love having a CC squad in my armies and vanguard look great. Then I looked at the honor guard. 25 points you get artificer armor, power weapon, bolter and bolt pistol. You have a better save and a range weapon. Vanguard models are pretty I would convert some to honor guard or proxy it out. For 145 points you get five guys, one with a relic blade and what ever other power weapons you have and they still have bolters for RF fun. Especially third company rapid fire fun.

Words of wisdom by Prophet40k
That game put my faith in Khorne to the test. My table-neighbor looked at the match up and said "Here you're going to need these more than I will" and handed me a bag of Jello shots. They must have pleased Khorne because I walked out 11-2.
Now looking at another list with MORE tyrants and MORE mawlocks, I said to myself. "Oh well looks like it's time for another beer. It'll take the sting out of this. LOL" |

Vanguard can take jump packs which makes them far more useful than a 2+ save could since they can actually threaten things without needing an expensive delivery vehicle.

On the other hand, Honour Guard are perfect for drop-podding into the enemy. Find a gunline, drop melee badasses, wreck face.

If only that were true. If it's not AP1/2, it's massive wound spam. Why would someone bring anything else?

Every time someone asks this question, I have to add my two cents: GO GUNSLINGERS! I have a unit of Vets that have 3 dual grav pistols and 2 dual plasma pistols, and they are fun as hell to play, and look great!.

So they have the firepower of a regular buke squad with less range?
135 points = 5 dudes with jump packs and power weapons. You can take multiple units (3-5 in that one formation). They're scary enough to everything but melee deathstars and cheap enough that even if all they do is draw fire from your other units, you're still coming out ahead (assuming the table has some terrain providing cover; LoS blocking terrain they can jump out from behind is even better).

No they have more firepower than a regular bike squad but with less range. 10 AP2 shots vs 6 for a bike squad. However, the gunslingers are definitely not points efficient. They look stellar and still pack a punch.
