Well, it is a cat that saved that station from bankruptcy and made an estimated billion yen. I'd be quite sad to lose that cat too.

As a Dudeist i can just say.

All in all, this is just a ploy for cats to help take over. They are terrifyingly evil after all. (Not a cat person, if you haven't guessed)

Anyway, I don't think that their sad that the cat itself died necessarily, but that their figurehead and quite literal savior of the company is gone. So in a way, as stationmaster, that cat was their Lord and Savior. I'm going to stop now before things get weirder.

Edit: Obviously the cat itself was mourned, but the cat was more than just a cat to them was the point I was getting at. I realized my words came off a little harsh and not how I intended them to be.

Gods in Japanese/eastern religions aren't the same as in western religions. They're not all-powerful omnipotent saviors of humanity or anything like that, they're more powerful/influential spirits. While it seems weird through the lens of western religion, worshiping the spirit of an animal that had such a huge impact on the area isn't at all odd.

Yeah, I was just poking fun. It's a bitter sweet story, and I hope this new cat will be of good service as well.
