Your complaining about how it was just Imperial Army on Armatura but they had UM elements and titans backing them up.

The WE and WB face off against the UM (with Guillman no less) at Angron's homeworld later in the same book and end up driving them off world after giving them a good beating.

A general who always goes to war with the deck stacked in his favour is an impressive general though.
Only if it was stacked by that General, not just pure luck or manipulation of someone else.

And yet they are always burdening by having to wear the idiot ball. The more HH novels are written the dumber and less believable the entire story gets. Authors aren't generals and so instead of seeing some truly inspired thinking most battles are won by luck/ gritting teeth/ unbelievable stupidity of the designated villain.

ADB's stuff makes the traitors competent (yes even the WE) but even when they lose there is a good reason given (In Betrayer they almost lose the whole battle at Armatura because Kharn and his soldiers charge into a massive UM gunline and the WB are too busy with chaos rituals to notice their situation.)

They are cowards, that's why they are not Impressive.

Abbadon attacked Loken with Terminator armor.
Lucius betrayed their own as letting the Emperors Children to sneak in from the back.
The whole operation on Istvaan 3 = the most cowardly act I've ever seen.

I'm actually surprised that Horus managed to make it so far.

Cowardice does not make them tactically/logistically/militarily incapable of getting all the way to Terra (which they did).

Keep in mind some of the "bravery" we see displayed by the loyalists:

1. Raven Guard ignoring orders and running around raiding traitors (see deliverance lost)
2. Iron Hands doing the exact same thing, but with more rage.
3. The UM bomb a feudal world planet to prove a point (see beginning of the First Heretic)

You're not supposed to see the Horus Heresy as a momentous battle against good and evil.

Its the servants of malevolent demonic entities versus the footsoldiers of a militaristic bigoted space-oligarchy.

Hey, when you're drunk and playing rpgs and writing books anything can happen.

... It was there, on the Davin moon, that Warmaster Horus turned to Stout. His promise his Porter forgotten...
