I have moved from Athens to London half a year ago and since I've recently settled down properly I am thinking about engaging with the hobby once more.
I am more than 10 years in the hobby, 40k that is, and I had pretty much what I needed, in Athens...

The reason why I am posting this is to ask if it would be cost effective and safe at the same time to get my stuff from Athens delivered here, both minis and equipment. Are we supposed to carry tools and paints in an airplane? What about plastic crack? What is the best way to transport vehicles?

If I can't transport my tools what would be the best place to get some new stuff in London?

Thanks in advance

Hi there,

There are lots of threads here about transporting by aeroplane, but they usually refer to foam-based cases. If you don't have battle-foam-style cases, keep searching. I've no idea, sorry.

Anyway, there are lots of GW shops in London. You can replace your entire tool set, paints, and models there

There are other shops in town, like Dark Sphere and Orc's Nest:

Or, model shops.

Thank you all for your replies.

I've checked both Dark Sphere and Orc' Nest and the tools they are offering are the GW ones. I was wodering if you guys know of any more specialised hobby stores with more variety as far as equipment is concerned.

How about gifts for geeks?

There is also Wayland Games but just make sure anything you buy is marked as in stock.

To transport your models, I can't recommend KR Multicase highly enough, as they will work with you to select a set of foams exactly as you need. Their product testing video is also amazing.
If you don't understand their website (and most of us don't) emailing a list of what you own to them will work.

While searching Google Maps for "model shops", I came across this place:
http://modelshop.co.uk/Home/ContactUs
http://modelshop.co.uk/Shop/Tools/

KR should be good for transporting models, but it would take up a lot of space. Custom trays have a lot of unused space around the model. If you mostly have infantry-sized models, KR cases would do the job.

there were other shops listed, all outside the centre.

That's a great place Skinneral. The 4D modelshop is amazing, its primarily an Architectural model designers paradise but serves wargamers well if you are in town.

Also there's Antenociti's Workshop for an online fix that does specialise in wargaming modelling.

Finally although GW stuff is dear their clippers are by far the bast I have ever used and i found to be well worth the price.

Can't thank you enough guys. Amazing shops indeed with tons of hobby stuff.

Can I ask if anyone has experience with transporting armies on a plane? Like hand luggage, in the cabin.

I am thinking of travelling to Greece with an empty backpack and come back with a full one. However, I don't think they will let me carry tools nor paints and other liquids but how about metal figures?
Will they pass through the checks?

== CARRY ON ==
You can transport your army in a bag, as long as bag meet the criteria set by the airline you are flying with.
Paints and other tools need to be placed in a 'checked' luggage, rather than Carry on.

== CHECKED LUGGAGE ==
Again, the bag or the suitcase must meet all the airlines criteria.
I traveled with a softshell suitcase (as a CHECKED luggage) that had my Dark Vengeance (plastic ), my paint kit including spray paints (which is a BIG NO-NO in luggage) and my terrain pieces and I did just fine.

However, right now I'm taking my whole Tau Army back home to Serbia, all units in foam trays and in a SKB hardshell suitcase. I don't want to take any risks.

I think your metal minis will be fine. They are small enough not to present a threat to security.

I don't travel much, but if it was me...:

If the cost to replace the paints, etc is more than the cost of a fine at the gate, see what you can carry.
Otherwise, dump what you can, and replace it when you get back.
