Subject: [AOS] Gonna start hammerwars now. Old Chaos Minis or only new releases?

What should I go for?
I want to avoid khorne due to thrashing them with two 40k armies I'm over painting red. Thinking nurgle or generic whatever chaos.
Or beastmen but I have no idea how either plays looking at the rules. Figure more experienced gamers could chime in with an opinion.

There are a few unique things you can do with beastmen.
(Which I recommend, because I like the models better)
one thing you can do is organize a raiding party, lots of ungors, backed up by small units of gors and bestigors.
You basically screen with the ungors, and set up charges with your better units. Overwhelm your opponent.
You could do a minotaur tribe, or centigor tribe, both of which could be unique and fun.
Whatever you do, have fun with it
Thanks

Beastmen have a lot of really cool, unique miniatures and in opposition to 8th ed they seem viable now. If you're considering them, I definetely encourage you to go for it. Especially if you can find their old armybook to buy somewhere cheap - their fluff is one of the best written. When reading it you can clearly see that the writer was very immersed in writing it, unlike almost every recent armybook for other armies.

This for 8th or AoS?
If you're not in a rush wait to see how the new models/races pans out. Unless you are in a rush or find a good deal; then go for either.

Its for AoS but its basically just warhammer now yeah?
I know someone unloading a bunch of warriors of chaos second hand for like 30-40% off rrp so i'll check out what they have and might grab a few bits and pieces just to have a dabble and wait and see what the future brings for beastmen models etc.
I have no interest in large blocks of units etc and much more interest in picking different table sizes and having a more social game so definitely keen on seeing what happens now.

There essentially are no faction rules. You can have any model in your force if you want because the game essentially doesn't have real rules.

things like Beastmen and Chaos Warriors were together in the Realms of Chaos warbands 25 years ago, so it makes sense to mix them...

I was under the assumption when it came to forces to bring, it's pretty much up to the player and his opponent and that's it. That's purely who decides what's going to be on the table. The lack of rules on what to bring was intentional, to make it a game to show off and have fun with your models, and a more social experience.
Something I've commonly seen people do is utilize the Grand Alliance matricies for combining armies of different factions. Anything under the "Chaos" grand alliance (Beastmen, Warriors/Daemons of Chaos, Skaven) are totally kosher to run together.
Again, it's up to you and your opponent. The entire point of Age of Sigmar was a direct result of the vitriol over rules disputes on sites like this one. It's your Age of Sigmar, man. You play it the way you want to.

There's a difference between it having no rules and having fake rules. There are no rules about what each person should bring and how to make an evenly matched force. To me, this will bring more rage and arguments in the long run than "well, I don't think that Dragon should be so few points" and the like. I have a bunch of friends who are into the game, and I have no doubt that we could agree when our forces are roughly equal. Games against them would probably be fun. Unfortunately, it won't be fun when I run across the guys who will bring and use every model in their (much larger and exhaustive) arsenal. Since there aren't any rules, telling them that we should have equal-ish numbers of wounds will fall on deaf ears. Forging the narrative for them is crushing anyone they play against and wiping their boots on the opponent afterward. I know several people with this sort of attitude.
To your other point, though, I agree that Warriors of Chaos and Beasts of Chaos should have always been allowed in the same army. It was like that when I started playing and finally became that way again at the very end. That was actually one of the things that brought me back to the game after so long. It didn't last very much time though.

There will be formations similar to 40k, as well as faction restrictions, but there are "Grand Alliances" that you can take anything from within. The Chaos one includes Beastmen, Warriors, Skaven, and Daemons.

From the direction that it seems the game is going, the models will be perfectly usable (they have rules and everything) but will be noticably smaller than new releases. Depending on what models you get. I suspect that Blight Kings, Sigmarines and the Khorne dudes from the Starter Set should be our touchstone for what 'infantry' will look like. The new Khorne guys are bigger than old Warriors of Chaos, I think.
But then, having slightly smaller models may well be fine. I mean, who is going to complain that your Warriors of Chaos are short? It isn't like Wolverine is tall.

Basic blood reavers are comparable to space marines without armor on, to put it to scale and the blood warriors are fantastic analogs for khorne bezerkers. So Chaos warriors will definetly be smaller on the side of being a standard guardsmen even. This is comical but I feel it would get old after awhile.

I have serious conflict going on haha
One hand I can get the new box for 200, roll sigmarines because I would like to paint them a lot more than khorne (have painted two khorne only 40k armies in my life). The plus side of this is I can probably sell the khorne straight away and invest in another sigmarite box when they drop next week etc.
The other option is the following for about 400.
2x boxes of AOW corruptors with a sorc and 2 lords
1x forge world (china forge) great unclean one
Nurgle Lord
Couple of Chariots
Plaguebearers
about 6 chaos knights
a giant
an about 4 minotaurs
Which is a pretty sizable themed army and i'll eventually pick up some plague drones, beastmen and a couple of things like chaos shrine, glottkin, blight dudes unit etc as I go
Everything would need bases, rebasing etc though, couple of things need a repaint etc and all that jazz so I am definitely torn about which way to go :O

What do you have now? If you don't need the AoS box right away you could buy it from the US with some other stuff and repaint/rebase your existing stuff while you wait for the US order to come in.

Then I'd suggest just getting a box or two of warriors/Beastmen and seeing how you get on before investing the home farm on the game so to speak.
The way AoS is that's more than enough for most games, add the bigger units for flavour later.

I bought the age of sigmar box.
Read everything. Was cool.
Now probably trading all the minis for beastmen and nurgle stuff I think.
Was thinking about rolling some sigmarites but after seeing previews of their gryphons etc I got a bit meh from a hobby perspective. Great minis, still might keep but if a good trade pops up I will probably take it amd rebase on lipped 32mm bases etc.

While someone could just bring whatever, there are specific factions. Less than in previous editions due to combining. It would be easy to say that other races from the subjugated realms were forced to fight together but really kinda lame from a fluff standpoint, and you would also miss out on a lot of the benefits of taking a cohesive force from the some faction. A lot of special abilities only effect those of the same group.
