Hey all,

I contacted GW customer service today asking the following
"Just a quick question re: shooting in AoS. Can a unit that is in combat use their shooting attacks a) against the unit they're in combat with and/or b) a unit they can see to their side or rear (i.e. out of the combat they are in)? It'd really help to get an answer to that."

Their response was;

"Thanks for the email.
As far as we can tell you sure can! But if in doubt always refer to 'The Most Important Rule'
Kind regards"

It's the "as far as we can tell" that makes me think they're perhaps not so sure themselves, though it might just be me being overly sensitive to semantics.

The answer is yes you can (shoot in and out of combat).

Not sure why they're passive with that answer. Perhaps customer services are always wooly.

That was my gut feeling too.

The only "combat locked" rule is in the movement phase.

Shooting in and out of combat is vital for Sudden Death scenarios too (or chipping away to remove a bonus).

Dave from Customer Service certainly could not have asked for an answer in his own company, eh? Overqualified, I guess!

Speaking of this rule I think it would be more balanced and realistic if every shot that is missed by your archers is counted as hitting your melee soldiers when you fire into an ongoing combat.

Yes, but requires them to have put even a little thought into their own ruleset. And, actually care.
