Hey guys, I've been reading through as much as I can (although I know the final v2 rules will tweak a few things later this week) but had some questions:
Could you give me your opinion on the optimal unit size for the different Abyssal Dwarf infantry? You can see them here:
https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1nhZLDFOHUXC2MCA6NwYQWr0HF2mSyvEWIlNH4oCtBeQ/htmlview#
Black Souls
Immortal Guard
Decimators
Berserkers
I think for the Immortal Guard and Berserkers, it is likely 20 (which is the highest they can be).
But what about for the Black Souls - should they be run as a horde? Or should they just not be taken at all in favor of the other options?
Same for Decimators - is a horde viable for the 30 breath attacks, or are they too likely to become disordered by getting charged and then having a huge unit unable to fire?
----
Finally, Polonius tells me this magic item would not work on Decimators since they have a breath attack, but I just wanted to ask as I had planned a similar upgrade to my blunderbuss unit for fantasy, and always wanted to run this big unit as the cornerstone of my army but it only really works if they can take this:
Jar of the Four Winds Cost: 25 pts
The unit’s ‘normal’ ranged attacks gain 12” to their
maximum range.
I'm guessing "normal" excludes their breath attack... or no? It is their "normal" ranged attack after all, and I couldn't find that defined anywhere.
Thanks all

One thing to plan for in KoW is building around regiments.
Regardless of army, the game pivots/is balanced around regiments, going so far as to make them the "currency" in list building, which opens up Monster/Hero/War Engine slots, as well as the smaller "Troops".
Sure, hordes/legions do as well, but building a list and expecting to need three or four regiments in there is a good way to start.
Likewise, building the biggest blobs you can, can be effective, but it is a hold-over in thinking from WHFB where Deathstars do serious work. In KoW you're almost always better served with two effectively fielded regiments, than one horde.
I will usually include one horde/legion when possible as an anvil, or perhaps tarpit, and yeah, they open up a bunch of additional slots... but I will rarely think BIG. Automatically Appended Next Post: Oh, and I don't recall any rule saying a Breath Attack isn't a normal one. Several units have unique normal ranged shots, like some of the Ogre units.
Your friend might be confusing Magic with "normal" ranged attacks, as you treat Magic like a ranged attack, without it receiving an of the usual modifications.

RiTides,
There is a Kings of War U.S. Players group on Facebook.
You can ask your question there as well. And since Kara Brown has won multiple US tournaments with her abyssal Dwarves I am sure she will have some advice for you going into 2nd edition.
Sincerely,
That Lee Guy

Page 24 of the most recent rules explicitly states breath attacks are not "normal" attacks. Neither are Ogre heavy crossbows.

There is a US group as well, although I am sure she is on both.

It's just breath attacks and spells in the print copy. Ogre Heavy Crossbows are now classed as normal attacks.

So we're all half-right, and can all feel good about ourselves. :-)
Now back to painting my Boomers (who might be just a HAIR too good... just saying).
