Hi guys, I haven't played 40k since 2000-something (or maybe even 1990-something) so I'm a little out of touch but I found out recently my local store sells and provides games for 40k.
Given that I live in Hong Kong, this is actually fantastic news.

I'm looking to build up an Imperial Guard army, with a mechanised theme. I know for a basic game I need a HQ and two troop choices. I'm aiming to have 500pts for my first game (at my local store).

This is what I have at the moment:

HQ: (None yet! Need to pick one up)

Troops:
20x Cadian Infantry (14x Paint-scratchers/flashlights, 4x plasma gunners, 2 sergeants)

Vehicles:
2x Chimera
1x Manticore (gift from a friend)

With this in mind, for a 500pt list should I try to squeeze the Manticore in? or ditch it in favour of more chimeras (chimerae?)

I think troop choice I'm stuck with two vet squads for now. I don't have the models for any other choice at the moment.

Moving forwards one would suggest that the army lists forum would be a handy resource.

Ditch the manticore for a leman Russ.

You can actually get enough to kit out the army with all you really could want in the hammer of cadia box set.

You get 10 guardsmen, a comissar with power sword and plasma pistol, and one leman Russ mbt with all the fixings to make the guardsmen and leman Russ whatever you like.

Tada nice easy army tweak.

From this point in bigger games bring in the manticore battery and more chimera. Maybe some sentinels and more tanks if your feeling goofy.

Did I misunderstand the meaning of the army list section? I thought that was for critique on a completed list?

What I'd do:

Get a CCS box, to get more special weapons,
Use the trenchcoat model in the CCS as a Commisssar.

Or, use the CCS as a CCS, and get another Chimera. Orders from a commander can give you a lot of options.

You might want to look at HWT for the Vets, but usually only when yoou aren't moving them around much.

The store Finder lists just 1 store in HK: Fun Atelier.
Either you know of it already or you know of another (please post it into the Store Finder).

Ditch the manticore and play the IG squads as vets. Get yourself a Leman Russ to be a command tank, and two others of the same type to be its escort. Add in another 2 full squadron's of Leman Russ and a couple more Veteran squads. Finally throw in a Company Command section to buff the infantry with orders and include an MOO and a MOF.

I'm not even sure I can afford more than one leman russ (HQ choice minimum)?

I use the Fun Atelier store. I've edited it's description to be more up to date about their products. I like the idea of using the CCS as a method of obtaining commissars and special weapons! Thank you for that advice.

Ack, my bad. Okay:
Get a Leman Russ. The Manticore is best at shredding large concentrations of light to medium Infantry whom are our in the open. at 500 points the chances of you facing this are slim as unless you are facing down a greentide or a Guard Infantry blob list and in all honesty the latter one is almost never encountered these days for very obvious reasons.
The minimal number of tanks needed for the HQ option is two, a command tank and an escort tank. If you cant afford more than one then bring a regular Battle Tank as Heavy Support.
For your HQ go for a Company Command Squad.
