Not sure if this is the best place to ask about this or not, but I figure that there's a fairly active bunch who play the game in this part of the forum. I'm thinking about grabbing some of the Heavy Gear Striders, but I can't get a clear sense of just how big the things are. Does anyone know of a place where I can find pics of them compared to other lines?

That depends. Are you talking about the striders that look like huge four or six legged tanks, the two legged striders, or the gearstriders?

Here's one image I found in Dakka Dakka's gallery:

The six-legged thing in the upper right is the Firedragon, I think. Upper left is the Naga.

Those are from Steel Paladin's gallery: http://www.dakkadakka.com/gallery/user/90820-Steel%20Paladin.html

BrandonKF put some scale pics up at my request that happen to include some striders. In general, they're bigger than a terminator but smaller than a dreadnought overall.

http://heavygearthunder.blogspot.com/2015/07/heavy-gear-infinity-and-15mm.html?view=classic

There aren't many scale pics online as I tend to search for them as well. It's why when I convert something I try to throw in other figs into a pic for scale purposes. I recommend doing a google image search for whichever strider you're interested in. Sorry but I don't own any striders personally. My figs go from gears straight to tanks.

The Coyote and the Thunderhammer were the particular Striders I was looking at. The Warstore's got both marked down and I was hoping that they might be just big enough to fudge the scale a bit and use them alongside Infinity.

Depends on what you want to use them as. I don't own either but I've seen both although years ago. The thunderhammer due to the wide stance and gun sticking out is best for that S8 profile for the maghiraba (although it is noticeably smaller but the sticking out parts fit that one best). The coyote depending on how you model it is likely a bit bigger than the biker profile as it is about the size of a space marine biker (bit shorter but wider) IIRC. Hope that helps.

Why not just buy Infinity minis?

He's got an infinity blog in his sig... I'm guessing he's familiar with infinity minis. Sometimes a sculpt from another game/company just scratches an itch that none of the official ones do. You've never ever used minis from another game company or converted ones to suit your fancy, Nomeny?

Ah, okay. Give me about an hour, I can get you a picture of the Coyote and the Red Bull next to some Combined Army models.

Here's someone's blog with an assembled Thunderhammer sitting on one of those gridded work mats, for scale, in the meanwhile: http://imbigontheinternet.blogspot.com/2011/05/heavy-gear-thunder-thunder-thunder.html
Thunderhammer's probably a bit tall for an S3 remote.

Edit: My Coyote's currently disassembled. :( But, for size reference, if you go to the DP9 webstore you can see the part breakdown: http://store.dp9.com/index.php?route=product/product&search=coyote&product_id=983

(They redid the Coyote model. TheWarStore has pictures for the old version, where each legs is in two pieces and you glue them into walking position, or tank mode position. The picture above is the redone version where you just get either walking legs or tank mode legs.)

The central hull is the big piece with the two turbines sticking out of the one side and the two pegs on the left and right sides. That piece is one and a half inches long not counting the turbines, and the assembled Coyote in walker mode would have its feet glued to the outside of a 40mm base like the base-extended remotes. In other words, I put the hull down on top of a 40mm base, and the length of it causes it to stick over the edge of the base.

The Coyote's probably short enough to use for an S3 legged remote.

I wanted to use the Striders as artillery/fire support TAGs to be used as objectives. It sounds like they may be too small for what I had in mind though. Though, it looks like the Coyote might work as a heavy duty Remote.

FWIW, Here's a few pics with North & South striders etc.
Aller, Mammoth, Thunderhammer

Cobra (40mm base), Command Naga (40mm base), Sagittarius, Ammon

Wow, the Mammoth is much smaller than I thought it would be. All of the pics I've seen make it look huge. It looks like it's barely bigger than a Dreadnought!

Those two based mechs in the second pic? They're on 40mm bases, right? The non-based Strider and the Caprice both look like they'd make great drones for larger scaled games.

Yep, those are 40mm bases. The image you in that post is 1cm squares.

The main downside to the Ammon (or any of the Caprice mounts (like the Bashan which is still listed on sale page) is that the default pose really spreads the legs out, so you need to do a little bit of bending or cutting to get the model to fit on 55mm base (that's 50mm from left front foot to left rear foot). They'll stand fine of their own, but it's a really wide stance. (My test assembly for a bunch of Caprice models had the legs just outside of 50mm circles) But the legs on the Caprice models are metal, and they're separate pieces to the central hub, so getting them to fit inside a 55mm base shouldn't be too bad.

Edit: Hasty size comparisons:

The grey thing's a mostly assembled Cataphract, missing its two weapons and its little head:

Those same models gawking at the hull of a Red Bull (the huge thing) and the hull of a Coyote:

If I had the legs attached, the Red Bull would be a little bit shorter than the Morat.

To be honest, no, I haven't. It just looks weird to me.

Thanks a lot for those, Solkan. That helps a lot. I can never get a good sense of scale from looking at those grids. Actually having the models next to each other really helps.

Just posted something new with this.

http://heavygearthunder.blogspot.com/2015/07/first-gecko-complete-comparisons-with.html

Haven't finished my Red Bull yet, I'll get it assembled as swiftly as possible and show it beside the Geckos and Cutter.

Hey, thanks for posting that! That's a big help. Definitely not as big as I was hoping, but big enough to use as a heavy remote.

Also, I like your idea of using the sponge to apply camo.

Thanks very much Barzam, though it was thanks to Tim at Gomi Designs that I discovered about sponging in the first place.

He pointed out that, to properly paint his ASPB, one would have to use several possible techniques. I found that sponging was the easiest out of the bunch, but also discovered just how well the watered-down Reaper paints took to the model. So, after frustrating myself with the Swamp Green, and then attempting to paint some dull red into crevices, I realized that I'd made a major goof-up, and instead used the sponge technique to apply a much more complete camouflage to it.

I'll be attempting to use this technique entirely (except for minor details) both with the other Gecko as well as with the Cutter, and possibly the Red Bull as well. We will see how that turns out.

I'll see about getting the Red Bull assembled before the weekend is out. Peace.

Hey Barzam, I just posted the newest update. I hope this is good enough.
