Trying to model a new bloodthirster with a friend. Would you say the Strength D axe is a good option? Substituting initiative for 8 Str D attacks on the charge?? Or are the other two better options???

Having one of them isn't a bad option, but typically my Daemon playing friend thinks the one with the Whip and the Breath is the better option.

Yes.

Yes, the strength D weapon is on the Bloodthirster.

He isnt as good as the 300 point version, who is a great character killer, howeevr nothing kills vehicles and weaker walkers as well as him.

The init 1 is a huge killer though; T6 3+ / 5++ isnt amazing statline

HOwever, I run one. I love it.

The coolness factor alone of a big 2H axe would be enough for me.

6000 - Hive Fleet Limax
4000 - Sons of Horus
5500 - Ultramarine's
1000 - Blood Raven's
3000 - Skaven

Which one is the 300 point one? I dunno, doing D6 wounds and ignoring invuls on every 5 and 6 rolled is evil...

Every 6 rolled, surely?

300 point gets hatred as well as a flamer, and the flail is d3 hits. Worth fifty points over a stand thirster.

Yeah it is only on a 6! My mistake. But still. With 8 attacks.... so what profile does the other thirster have? It's a hard decision to make :(

Yes, if possible always invest in a D strength weapon, as it is very deadly against all opponents.

Is it the best D in the game? No.
But it is still a lot of D attacks this will hit just about everything on 3+ on guy that ignores terrain and moves 12 inch. And can be buffed to have a 2+ invulnerable.

His statline does mean you have to select your targets though, he's not going kill everything in sigh and he can die very easily to certain units.
You will be attacking different units than with the other thirsters.

He's the only worthwhile Bloodthirster, IMO.

Not very survivable, but will probably kill anything in the game if it lives long enough to get the charge and swing.

I wouldn't say he's the only worthwhile one. Having an MC as fast; and as strong is a real plus. A plasma Pistol whip (that doesn't get hot) possibly having 3 hits is really strong in its own. I'm not overly fond of his other axe though. Isn't it strength user, specialist weapon, and ap 2?.

It's weather sacrificing his initiative is worth destroyer weapon attacks. Maybe if he had a better invul *cough cough grimiore* it might be better. But then it's pairing him with someone else. Which is even more expensive. Would you say for smaller games, drop the axe???

Take the axe. Swing the D everywhere.

Surely there's no point taking the axe under 2000 points???

I'm just getting back into 40k after a break. I just though the best way to get the axe wielding thirster into cc would be to buff him. So I'd need to plan around it.

I didn't think there would be much need for a D weapon in a 1500 point game. Can someone explain to me why I'm wrong??

Imperial Knights, Wraithknights, various superheavies and vehicle formations can all be taken in games of 1500 (and less, even). Strength D is pretty helpful in dealing with them. I1 makes the DThirster a dubious prospect, but a power fist isn't gonna cut it much of the time.

The main people ill be playing against are Admech, Tau, and craftworld.

I just thought facing them, wraith knights seem to be the only target worthy. Surely a D prince would be just as suited?

Eye of Terror

I would think he'd be cut down by AdMech or Eldar before he got close enough to use the weapon. The answer there may be to bring 2.

God no. Wraithknights are S10 so a single wound instant deaths a DP. Not only that but they are T8 so a DP only wounds them on 6s and they still get FNP. The only way for a Prince to be able to fight one is to roll either fleshbane or Iron arm and even then you still won't do enough damage to remove all 6 of its wounds and then it will Instant Death you.

Also Ad Mech are IoM so easily access to Imperial Knights (and even have a formation that makes them take one)

Against tau, admech(sans knight) and eldar the D thirster might be overkill. You have a point there.
Until the eldar brings a wraithknight. or the admech decides to ally in some knight or even a land raider.

Even "just" a riptide will die much much easier to the D thirster, as it has more attacks and wounds on a 2+ rather than 3/4+, in addition a 6 on either will instantly kill the riptide, but only the D will guarantee the kill. Against the other thirsters it will still get a save. And the D is the cheapest.

And against heavy armour the other thirsters are really pretty useless. Of course if your seeing infantry gunlines and bikes and such, then the D will feel a bit out of place. And even then it's still 8 attacks. Hardly bad.

So just as some friendly advice... my friends tend to use the imperial knight formation for his AdMech. And wraith knights for the eldar. Tau he sometimes brings the tide. Other times its infantry based.

I'm starting at 1500 points. Which thirster would you buys bring?

Is this for Chaos Demons or Khorne Demonkin?

For general play I would say the Insensate Rage (the D-Thirster) for sure. The other two Bloodthirsters either can't hurt Imperial Knights (S6 vs AV13) or will struggle big time against the Wraithknight (S6 vs T8 with FNP). Effectively what you are doing is banking on your WS10 against their WS4, meaning they only hit you on 5s. With their low amount of attacks, you're are straight up gambling that they wont kill you before I1 where you are all but guaranteed to kill them back. Against a Riptide, the other Thirsters are OK but the D-Thirster will again all but guarantee the kill.

The other two Thirsters do plenty well against regular infantry (though anything with Invuln saves will stop it short). But both Chaos Demons and Khorne Demonkin have plenty of other ways to deal with infantry, but very few ways to take on Imp Knights and Wraithknights. WS10, T6 with 3+ Armour, 4+ Jink, 5+ Inuln and a FNP (if using Khorne Demonkin, or Demonic Rewards/Psychic Powers if using Chaos Demons) is still reasonable enough for the D-Thirster to survive to I1 against regular infantry.
