Didn't see this posted up, what a real shame

Nintendo President and CEO Satoru Iwata has passed away aged 55.

The Japanese gaming giant released a short statement confirming he passed away due to a bile duct growth.

“Nintendo Co., Ltd. deeply regrets to announce that President Satoru Iwata passed away on July 11, 2015 due to a bile duct growth,” the company said.

Mr Iwata had taken time off for health reasons last year and had had surgery to remove a tumour, returning to the company later in 2014.

Mr Iwata was appointed president in 2002 and was in charge when the company released its highly-successful Nintendo DS and Wii consoles.

Before that he was a programmer with Nintendo subsidiary HAL, which produced games like the Kirby series and EarthBound.

Nintendo said Mr Iwata’s death leaves senior managing directors Genyo Takeda and Shigeru Miyamoto as representative directors.

Before his death Mr Iwata had been pushing for a departure from the company’s consoles-only policy, in a bid to repair the tech company’s balance sheet.

Last year, Mr Iwata said he would slash his salary in half for several months to atone for the downturn at Nintendo, which has struggled as rivals Sony and Microsoft outpaced it in console sales.

All three companies are also fighting off the trend toward cheap - or sometimes free - downloadable games for smartphones and other mobile devices.

Mr Iwata had argued that venturing into the overpopulated world of smartphones and tablets risked hollowing out their core business, and cannibalising the hard-fought value of their game creations.

But Mr Iwata later acknowledged Nintendo had to move into new areas.

Nintendo in March unveiled plans to buy a stake in Tokyo-based mobile gaming company DeNA, as part of a deal to develop smartphone games based on Nintendo’s host of popular characters.

That really does suck, even though I haven't played a Nintendo game for a while.

Really bad news. For once, we lose a dedicated video game fan and great programmer.

On the other hand, it already isn't looking good for Nintendo and that loss further hurts them.

Nintendo going to be fine they have so much money they could run a deficit for like 38 years, they've been around since like the 1800's. Also a new CEO may allow for changes in Nintendo's strange and restrictive policy on using it's games for online videos.

Nintendo hasn't done anything right in the last few years. WiiU was a complete disaster and was abandoned soon after its launch, YouTube fiasco, no big releases etc. Right now, they got nothing going for them.

Yeah, I agree but still Nintendo still has plenty of money to work with to be able to revive themselves. I wouldn't say WiiU is a complete disaster they've got some pretty good games on the console now it's just unfortunately not a big seller and it's particular innovation (a screen on the

controller) is too niche and maybe not that great of an idea.

He will be dearly missed, the man pretty much put Nintendo on his back and carried it through some rough times. Pokemon and Smash Bros. would be nothing right now without him.

Actually, WiiU was a financial disaster until Sm4sh and Mario Kart 8 came out, which has really turned things around for them. Currently the Smash Bros. scene is growing rapidly in to an e-sport and with the DLC they are promising for the new platform, they are poised to make a very very large amount of cash. Especially since one of their main rivals, Microsoft, flat out offered them Banjo-Kazooie as a character for their game out of the blue.

That is a very ill informed opinion you have. I mean, even their rivals love their games.

You might want to take a look as DS sales figures some time. Also, Splatoon. Monster Hunter 4. Hyrule Warriors (Jesus Christ this thing sold crazy well). And Smash Bros.

Nintendo makes money hand over fist. Pointing out the Wii sales figures are not as strong as they might appear is completely different from saying that the Wii is a 'complete disaster.' It's pretty much the only 8th gen console that was pulling profits day one. People have been saying "Nintendo gonna die" since 2000, and its just not panning out. Just last year they posted a massive profit margin (double their margin in 2010). Reality is, that Nintendo plays a very different game than other companies in the market, and trying to judge their success in the same way we judge EA or Microsoft just doesn't work.

It's also worth noting that Nintendo is increasingly embracing CompMon on their Global Link events, and it ain't no coincidence given that Gen6 made it super easy to raising competitive Pokemon on the hand held games.

It took a long time, but with SSB4, Pokemon Gen6, and Splatoon, Nintendo seems to finally be trying to embrace online play as a core aspect of their products rather than something just tacted on as an afterthought.

And, in all honesty, Wii U is probably the best console of the bunch. No seriously, almost all other games from the other consoles I can get for PC, besides one or two decent exclusives.

Wii U games? Christ, if I want to play them I better dish out the cash and get the damn console.

And Splatoon as the most recent hit for them as well. That game is fantastic fun and still selling really well. The whole Nintendo is dying thing is mostly over puffed garbage from fan boys of the other systems

New Star Fox game and Mario Maker? Fire Emblem game coming out soon. Yeah, Nintendo has no big titles coming out for sure.

Here is a song from a professional Melee player in honor of Mr. Iwata.

My dad & I got a Wii U simply because he wanted the Virtual Console stuff, (namely the SNES game Breath of Fire, after he broke my GBA cart from over use!), and because I wanted Smash 4...
Adding Hyrule Warriors is just icing + even more additional ice cream on the cake.

And thanks to Smash 4, (which I also picked up for the 3DS as well), now we're into the Amiibos...

And worse yet, for Xmas I'm putting down for a new 3DS XL for the added processing power & Amiibo capability, so that I can fully enjoy Smash 4, plus the fact I'll be getting the new Fire Emblem IF and Hyrule Warriors Legends.

Nintendo is still laughing all the way to the bank, especially with their Amiibo range literally being a licence for them to print money.
