So in a game on Saturday I think I made a bad call, but need clarification.

I had an Ethereal within 12 of my crisis suits and commander who had been charged by nasty stupid Necron shrimp. They lost combat, and I had to roll a morale check. Both Ethereal and Commander Leadership are 10, but the rule says use Ethereals leadership. I did not take Bonding Knife ritual on the models. My question is, was this a straight roll of a 10, or should I have subtracted the loss from combat from 10, and then had to roll that or under. I googled this for hours before I posted here, and searched this forum with no luck on this situation. I said it stays 10, becuase Im using the Ethereal Leadership, but upon thinking about it, I am pretty sure I jacked that up. Can anyone confirm or deny?

you would have had to subtract the losses from the leadership of 10, unless the ethereal called stubborn.

The Bonding Knife Ritual only activates when trying to regroup, in which case, they would test at an unmodified leadership. This does not prevent a unit from fleeing combat, but instead buffs their test to regroup to full leadership even if they are below 25% and without an Independent Character.

It is honestly a bit of a niche upgrade for large squads.

just because a character is stubborn, does not mean that units *outside* of the unit that character is in benefit from it.

in the same way that a fearless character does not automatically make all units fearless that use its LD for tests if it has a rule allowing other units besides the one it is in to use its LD.

You should have made the test at your best LD - the appropriate # for combat results

No, the Unit should have used the Ethereals Leadership as per the rules. That was not the question. The first reply answered the question. Thank you though.

right, you use the etherials LD as I stated.

at -3...

using another characters LD does not change that you take the test with the negative modifiers.

just wanted to clarify as the first poster incorrectly claimed that stubborn would confer to any units within range that used that characters LD was all.

the down underworld

I believe he was referring to the area effect rules the ethereal can choose from each turn. One of which grants stubborn to all units within 12" iirc
