So over the weekend I had a game with a friend and under my assumption of the rules as written I believe that an Hq that takes no mark of Chaos is able to freely join any unit that has a mark regardless of its type.

My friend questioned this and after looking it up in the codex it was a bit unclear. He was gracious enough to allow me to continue using an unmarked Sorc with my 3x tzeentch oblits for the game as long as I looked into it on dakka!

So there you have it, what do you all think?

Personally I feel it is a yes because an Hq with a mark can join an undivided unit (unmarked) such as regular marines, why could an Hq not join a marked unit then? Not mixing Chaos marks makes perfect sense to me.

I would say yes, you can do that. That's how my girlfriend does it. She doesn't like giving her sorcerer the MoN because it limits a spell she can take. But everything else is Nurgle.

Yes, totally. Since he/she/it doesn't have a mark at all, your not mixing marks, so no problem there.

The confusion comes I think because they call it a "mark of Chaos undivided" so it can be a bit ambiguous.

The chaos codex makes no reference to a "Mark of chaos undivided"just no Mark. So yes , an unmarked character can join a marked unit, and vice versa.

Historically this hasn't been the case. Now? I don't know. But it used to be only Abbadon? had a special Undivided Mark that let him join up. At least that's what I remember.

My WHFB armies were Bretonians and Tomb Kings.

Abaddon has all 4 marks but is not limited by the rule that doesn't allow units of a different mark to not join. Says that in a FAQ

I thought the rule stated clearly that a model with a mark cannot join a unit with a different mark. Which would obviously not be a problem for a model without a mark. Havent looked at my book in a while though.

Abaddon can specifically avoid the multi Mark units per the FAQ. But an IC with no Mark at all can indeed join a Marked unit or other Marked IC.

And even better is an unMarked Sorcerer joining Nurgle obliterators along with a Daemonkin Herald of Khorne...in a Dreadclaw! No Mark on the Herald and Daemon of Khorne doesn't mention any conflict in the Daemonkin book, and they're battle brothers.
