Honours of War: Wargames Rules for the Seven Years WarThe Seven Years' War was the pinnacle of 18th-century warfare, with dramatic campaigns and battles, famous leaders, and wide variety of colourful uniforms. Compared with the later Napoleonic Wars, tactics were simpler, armies more professional, and battles tended to be smaller. Using these quick-to-learn rules, players can bring this period to the tabletop, recreating anything from a small skirmish to a major pitched battle. Although simple, the rules allow for a wide range of tactics and reward historical play. That said, fog of war sometimes produces unexpected results and units don't always obey their orders! The game movies quickly, and players must be prepared to regroup and counterattack or to press home an advantage - a lot can happen in one move! En Garde!En Garde! is a small-scale skirmish game based on the successful Ronin rules, in which small groups of warriors fight each other for honour or riches. Rather than just rolling a few dice, the rules allow players to make tactical decisions about how the models that they control will fight - offensively, defensively, or by applying special skills and abilities. En Garde! covers the conflicts of the 16th, 17th and early 18th centuries, when black-powder weapons started to become common in battle but martial prowess still determined the outcome.
Play as Border Reivers, Conquistadors, Landsknechts, Aztecs, French Musketeers, Caribbean Pirates and many more, in scenarios that evoke classic engagements of the genre. Sub-plots (secondary objectives for each side) have also been introduced, making gameplay even more varied and exciting. Simple campaign rules allow multiple scenarios to be played in sequence and permit warbands to develop over time. An appendix is also included to provide brief rules for supernatural creatures of the period - monsters, demons, revenants and witches - and new abilities and equipment to fight them, making En Garde! the perfect ruleset for gamers who want something a bit different from the norm.
Black Ops - Tactical Espionage WargamingBlack Ops is a skirmish wargame of tactical espionage combat for two or more players. It recreates on the tabletop the tension and excitement of modern action-thrillers such as the Bond and Bourne films, The Unit or Burn Notice TV shows, and the Splinter Cell and Modern Warfare series of video games.
The fast-play rules use regular 6-sided dice and a card-driven activation system to keep all players in the thick of the action, while the mission generator provides a wide range of options for scenarios, from stealthy extraction or surveillance missions to more overt raids or assassinations. Stealth, combat and technical expertise all have a role to play, and players may select from a number of different character types - spies, mercenaries, criminals, hackers, special forces and many more - to recruit the best possible team for the job. Players may also choose to join a faction - powerful organizations, intelligence agencies, criminal syndicates, militaries or rebel groups, each with a stake in international affairs. By doing so, their team may receive certain benefits, but may also find itself limited at a crucial time. With the variety offered by the characters, factions and scenarios, no two games of Black Ops should ever be the same!
Although the standard Black Ops setting is an ultra-modern world just a hair removed from our own, the rules are versatile and adaptable enough to suit OSS operations behind Nazi lines, Cold War-era infiltration missions in Moscow or Berlin, or sabotage runs against a rival corporation's interests in a cyberpunk dystopia, and the rulebook will include a guide to running games in such settings.

So was I! Manchu wrote:Ronin is not the most elegant rule set, in my opinion. But building the combat system around a secret draw/counter pool mechanic is so brilliant that I can completely forgive certain facets that may be clunky or vague. I really cannot wait to play this game. If it turns out to play as well as I think it might, despite being a rather tedious read, I can imagine using these rules to do French and Indian War skirmishes and Three Musketeer type games.

Now is certainly the time - there's a resurgence in boardgames/wargames/tabletop games and GW's position as probably not been as tenuous as it is now in the last 10+ years!

Amazon lists John Lambshead as the author of Poseidon's Warriors. He also did the Germany Strikes! campaign book for Bolt Action and I believe is writing the mysterious, upcoming Doctor Who miniatures game rule set for Warlord.

Not been impressed with any Osprey set so far. All have left me a bit cold.
Will be interesting to see if these interest me more. Dragon Rampant has my eye...
Reckon you can add Bolt Action 2nd ed to that list... must be time to consider a clean up instead of a new print run?

Chacun son gout.
I have Ronin, Fistful of Kung Fu and the Napoleonic naval one.
They seem pretty decent rules to me, not without flaws (but then people complain about DBMM and Field of Glory, two of the most intensively developed sets of modern times) and they are well produced, handy sized books and quite modestly priced.
For me, they are a refreshing change from the typical £30+, A4 hardback that has become fairly standard thanks to GW and FoW, etc.

For reference, here's the series so far:
OWG1 - Dux Bellorum (Sub-Roman Britain)
OWG2 - A World Aflame (1920s/30s)
OWG3 - In Her Majesty's Name (steampunk skirmish; In The Emperor’s Name variant)
OWG3A - IHMN Heroes, Villains and Fiends
OWG3B - IHMN Sleeping Dragon, Rising Sun
OWG4 -Ronin ("cinematic" feudal Japan)
OWG5 - Of God's And Mortals (mytholgical, Song of Blades and Heroes variant)
OWG6 - A Fistful of Kungfu (80s Hong Kong cinema, Song of Blades and Heroes variant)
OWG7 - On the Seven Seas (pirates)
OWG8 - Lion Rampant ("cinematic" Medieval Europe)
OWG9 - Fighting Sail (Napoleonic naval)
I have everything other than OWG3B. I have played IMHN, Ronin, and Lion Rampant. Of these, I really enjoy Ronin. It very neatly captures the feeling of post-war Samurai cinema.
Osprey also published
Field of Glory (multiple eras Ancient through Napoleonic, DBA successor; many supplements)
Force on Force (modern warfare; several supplements)
Tomorrow's War (near-future miltary sci fi)
Across A Deadly Field (American Civil War; two supplements)
Land of the Free (American War for Independence)

By "Duel in the Sun" do they mean the North Africa theatre of WW2? And didn't Warlord say they had planned a great war supplement for BA sometime in 2015?

Duel in the Sun is Africa and more:
As for WWI, I seem to recall WLG putting out an article with their 2015 release plans back in January but cannot find it. I know they also planned to take over distribution of Victory at Sea from Mongoose but there's not been a peep about it since the beginning of the year.

The problem with Victory At Sea is that Mongoose wanted to own WW1 by producing their own range of ship models that was a different scale from everything else already on the market.
If they had stuck to a decent set of rules and good quality modern models in the same scale as already existed, people might have been persuaded to supplement their existing collections.

Mongoose's ability to fail upward is shocking. They've cycled through more half baked games than any other company I can think of.

Keep in mind that Mongoose has been cursed with some unreliable partners.
As far as Victory at Sea goes, I don't think existing naval wargamers are (or at least should be) the ideal target demographic.

There may be something in that, though to look at things the other way, existing gamers could be recruited as evangelists for the new system if it was compatible with what they already owned.
Either the rules or the models might appeal to existing gamers who would then proselytise to new recruits. By making the rules dependant on the models and making the models incompatible, you immediately freeze out all the existing naval gamers who presumably would be the most likely to be interested in the game.
In any event, Mongoose failed. I look forwards to Osprey relaunching the project. They seem to have a lot more staying power.

Here's what I would take away from Bolt Action: First, and most obviously, customers who don't already have what you're selling are more likely to buy it than those who already do. Second, attracting new players means building a new player base. There is a positive correlation between the growth of that base and the likelihood of existing gamers converting to your game/miniatures (because they want to game). Looking at the product line, Victory at Sea is just not that impressive to the "new player" demographic. That leaves the established gamers, who are as likely (or more likely) to critically tear your rule set apart as they are to support it. And that seems to be what happened to Victory at Sea; at least that partly explains what happened. So if I worked for WLG, I would advocate jacking up the production values in the rulebook, streamlining the mechanics as much as possible, and giving the models some eyecatching trade dress.

Manchu speaks the truth. You will not convert existing players off the bat. You need to build your own, new playerbase. You do that with sizzle and glitz!
They should also add proprietary dice too!
