You can put 12 fire warriors in a devil fish, drop them off in from of a unit(cover if you can). have an ethereal near by and have 3 shots per warrior within rapid fire. 36 S5 shots at BS3 is not super, but add some marker lights and BS4-5? well the volume of S5 will just do plenty of damage to any infantry. They can be aggressive if you play them right with decent list comp.

And you're within 18" of the enemy. You can put some serious damage on some moderately strong units, but anything stronger will survive and come murder you, unless the enemy really just left some high value target off on its own unsupported by the rest of his guys... I'm not saying it can't happen. I'm saying it's both situational enough and not powerful to justify the expense. That's what like 250ish points? You could just have three broadsides for less or a Riptide.

Ok so for 249 take pathfinders, ethereal, and pulse accelerator plus dpod fish that's 33 pulse at 12" or 22 at 24" plus markerlight if needed

But if my opponent goes first my pathfinders are in a dfish so they get to make it to my turn because just like you said everyone is like pathfinders? Ohmaigawd first blood! So in effect doesn't the fish pay for itself by keeping them safe? If I go first I can move my mobile gun line up -- at least 3squads all within 6" please come charge my 104 overwatch shots. If I pay for the upgrade the fish can overwatch and if they are burst, SMS that's 24 more shots. If they die I still have my back line; riptides, hammerheads, missile suits. Throw a voidshield right at the deployment edge and they are safe for that disembark.

But markerlights are heavy, so you're snapfiring them the turn your pathfinders move, no?

It is not about winning. It is about fielding lists that compete so that games are balanced and fun. A riptide is hardly OP in today's current meta.

Yep. fish is not a good defense for pathfinders, because they can simply ignore it. the pathfinders will be snap shooting when disembarking, making them mostly irrelevant unless they stand out "in the open" for a turn.
Ethier you disembarke, and any anti-infantry gun mows you down while you spend a turn prepping, or you stay in the fish-effectively not in the game due to lack of fire ports.
"Weapon" pathfinders can find a use for it, theoretically, but they are simply too expensive. each ablative wound costs 11 points for mere guard stats (with pulse carbine, but still dies the same.), so despite the guns being great, a single volly is all you are getting with the fish-and its not worth the cost, its better to pack plasma suits over rail rifles, and missile suits over ion rifles.
104 overwatch shots requires you taking no losses before the assault hits, and with pathfinders/fire warriors that's a dream that will never happen. a fish costs alot already, packing it with SMS upgrade and the overwatch upgrade costs so much its not practical at all, and actually outmatched by the LBBC hammerhead, who is dubious by itself.
There is only one use for a devilfish in the current tau codex.
If you know you are playing relic, pack a few fire warriors and darkstrider in one, and do a turn 1 steal of the relic via the scout move+T1move+disembark then flat out the fish to bodyblock LOS to the team, keeping them safe. and if you are lucky and the fish survives, embark back and shuffle away while jinking, and pull enemy units to a chase while your army shoots.
That's a gimmik that will only work once, but will be hilarious when you pull it off (nobody expect tau to do a T1 rush to the center field.

Well, I for one like Fish of Fury. It's not that expensive and really catches the enemy's attention. I ususally put it far from the rest of my forces, forcing my opponent to deviate fire to them. That extra victory Point for the Ethereal sometimes is too much for them to not fall for it.
While they try to kill my jinking ObSec devilfishes, I use my Crisis to win the game

Just leave the ethereal inside the Fish for a bigger bubble.
The problem is the thing is expensive for what basically drops off a guy slightly mid field. for an army that doesn't need to do that really.
No firing points makes it useless as a bunker its not a fast vehicle so you cant move around shooting SMS at things.
If its going to stay expensive then it really should get an upgrade to its fire power. like instead of it being TL the SMS can be two sets for more shots. or individual bursts. or even ability to take marker drones might be nice.

Had the devilfish pack marker drones rather than gun drones, it might have become a good supporting platform for FOF tactics actually. not the most accurate marking out there, but when its spread around like that (and the fish itself can jinx so its not an easy kill), it might actually be useful.
Nice thought. kind of like the old "Mirage" formation. (an old apoc formation from the days the formations cost points)

I'm pretty sure you can't move, disembark then flat out. Disembarking after a move prevents further vehicle movement.
As for expensive bodies for good guns, it's part of the reason I can't see myself using rough riders. (Did you know IG could put 2 plasma guns on a unit that moves 12" and is not impeded by terrain? They can, and it's still not worthwhile.)
