Me and my friend are about to start a narrative campaign, where Blood Angels are assaulting a Forge World defended by Guardsmen supported by Skitarii. We have already thought up of missions and other cool ideas, but we can't come up with a good idea of why they would be fighting.
Can you suggest any good reasons for the two forces to be fighting?

The Blood Angels discovered a huge Necron incursion welling up in a nearby system and require the Forge World's vast armory to stand a chance at quelling this threat.

The Adeptus Mechanicus denies their request, of course, and not having time to go through the bureaucracy of the Imperium the Blood Angels decide to acquire the Forge World by force, and should the Inquisition come snooping later, they'll just have to hope that the ends justified the means.

Tech-heresy on the Forge World.

there was Tech Heresy on the forge world 5 centuries ago (now long dealt with) but the blood angels only just got the astropathic message to purge the world.

hilarity ensues.

The Mechanicum has discovered the secrets of the Baal predator, the furioso dreadnought and the librarian dreadnought, and the blood angels are like nuh uh bro and they're like ya bro were totally telling the imperium on you and probably also were gonna make like a jillion of these.

And then they fight.

The BA are repoing their damn drop pods from the Skitarii.

Clearly they would be fighting FOR THE EMPEROR!!!
Or perhaps the forgeworld has seceded from Imperium because they have embraced dreaded heresy of thinking for themselves.
Also, another fun idea might be that the adeptus mechanicus of that forgeworld have been engaged forbidden research such as the development of Artificial Intelligence.

A clue to fixing their mutated geneseed, and keeping said secrets secret.

The planetary governor has withheld tithes, is the most commong reason to fight inter-imperiumly.

Perhaps tyranid genestealer cults have infiltrated the planet, and the blood angels arrive to stomp it out. Or word bearers have stopped by and preeached a little too much heresy for the planet to be allowed to keep its indepence.

Perhaps a ship from Blood Angels Chapter was lounging in orbit when the Red Thirst and Black Rage overtook its navigator, they crashed, destroying a munitions factory. The astra militarum thought the blood angels attacked them, the blood angels thought the AM shot at one of their ships.

The Blood Angels have a long history of not getting along splendidly with the Mechanicum. I suppose maybe the Blood Angels deployed on a Forge World or a Hive World with ties to the Mechanicum for some reason (perhaps Corbulo thought there was some evidence of a taint-free blood sample like the one in the Shield of Baal), and the presence of stuff like the Baal Predator/Lucifer Pattern Engines and Furioso Dreadnought set the Mechanicum off and led to them deploying the Skitarii. The IG were not too thrilled about seeing the Blood Angels all up in their business either, so they allied with the Skitarii.

Maybe the IG saw something they shouldnt have, on their last deployment. eg BA slurping on some necks, Rather than let them blab to anyone, they decided to remove the whole problem at once.
Just to let the BA be the bad guys for once.
