A friend and I are going to a doubles tournament this weekend and we've decided to be those idiots with an Ork gunline and Close Combat Tau.

Got 500 points each.

I'm thinking an Ethereal, Kroot and XV-8's with Flamers.

Any better suggestions?

Farsight is the only Tau that is decent in melee IIRC.

Commander Farsight

Ethereal

Crisis x3: Onager Gauntlet, x2 Shield Drones, x2 TL Fusion Blaster, x1 Missile Pod

Kroot x10
Kroot x20, Hound

500p on the button. Kroot outflank; the Ethereal attaches w/ the big blob. Farsight and friends no-scatter deep strike. Farsight ditches any ID-causing wounds to the shield drones, who have a 50/50 chance of shrugging it off on their invul. You've got some AT to grab first blood. Have fun.

3 units of 3 crisis with flamers; 2 with FnP and 1 with Hit & Run
Some have fusion as well, so they can open vehicles and melee their contents

This is the perfect moment to break out Aun'Shi. "Who is he" your probably asking. Well he is the named close combat etherial of cource. What edition of the white dwarf, imperial armor, or suppliment codex does he come from. None of the above he is a hidden "gem" hiding in the tau codex. For just over double the price of a regular etherial you can get an etherial with rending, or rerolling invuln saves. WOW! What a bargain. You cannot miss out on this sweet close combat tau prowess.

FSE

Farsight
Commander - Fusion Blades (+the mandatory TL fusion), Stims and VTR

3x Crisis suits with dual flamers

10 Kroot, 2x Kroot Hounds

=499

Farsight and the Commander put in work in CC, crisis join them for taking wounds and awesome overwatch

wrap them in a kroot bubble and let hilarity ensue!

Just run crisis suits without any guns

Okay so like the others have said Farsight for sure. Emp warriors for vehicles, riptide for smash? Possibly aun'va he gets two ethereals with honor blades for 100 pts. Vespids are I 6. But if you want a unit with no guns at all and will only cc then naked crisis suits and squads of shield drones.

Well Crisis suits without guns is still a decent option. and getting aun'wi would be better since he can actually kill a few things in CC. Kroot obviously should be the core of the army. Riptides are the only thing that an really get ap 2, and good at tarpitting something strong(3++ inv if you ge the nova charge off)

Do try to squeeze in an onager gauntlet...that thing is freaking amazing for 5 points. It's basically a hand of darkness from the Black Legion supplement, except its only a 10th of the cost.

And the commander is actually pretty decent in melee, I've had one survive one round of combat with a juggerlord with blind axe of fury in 1 on 1 combat and almost kill him as he was already close to dieing from taking down a flyrant and a pack of crisis suits.

CC Crisis suits is the only reason for running the over priced sheild generators. You will love the looks on opponents face as you save against power weapons.

Then toss on the flamers for doing damage in overwatch and before you charge.

FSE has solid choices for CC buff options, Warscraper Drone gives the unit move through cover and any enemy unit in 12" treats difficult as dangerous. Paired with a Seismic node you could make things unpleasant for counter charge units or units that try ro run away.

Farsight has AP2 and 4 attacks at I5.

If ever a Riptide is in melee, it's not the one doing the trolling.

Also if you take bodyguards, one can take an Onager Gauntlet or a Puretide chip (and use it to gain counter attack or furious charge or monster hunter).

Actually, looking at it some more...

Far sight + 7 body guards would put out 33 S5 attacks on the charge, but they would be most of your points. (Probably a smaller unit of bodyguards?)
