I'm on the brink of buying them because I think they look fantstic, but can they be used in 40k? Can I use the rules in the fifth Horus Heresy book - Tempest, or do I have to use them as Honour Guards in 40k?

Officially? No, you can't use them as 30k units. 30k is a different game.

There are no 40k legal rules for them as 30k is a different game(which uses the same system).

You could use the models as "counts as" for something though. Maybe as a command or vanguard veteran squad with Storm Shields. or Assault Terminators perhaps? ask your gaming group.

You should talk to your opponent, but no. Under most circumstances, the 30k stuff is meant to be played against other 30k stuff. The Unit Entry is in Book 5 of the HH series, and is only meant to be played as such.

HOWEVER, in a game of 40k, you could run them as:

1. Vanguard Vets with Storm Shields and Power Axes.
2. Command Squad with Storm Shields and Power Axes.
3. Individually, they could be used as an Assault Marine Sergeant with a Combat Shield and Power Axe, a Captain/Chapter Master with a Storm Shield and Power Axe, a Chaplain with a Shield Eternal (just give him a power maul instead of the axe... and that's about it.

Screw that, I'm going to use them as my Honor Guard. They have decorative shields.

That would work for me.

I'd actually do a little internal eye roll if these models were being used as Ultramarines in a 30k game.

As far as I know, only Emperor's Children were given permission by the Emperor to bear an aquila on their armor during this time period, and these guys are loaded with aquilas. To me, these guys look like 40k Ultramarines with 30k powerpacks. Looks like forgeworld broke its own fluff, but maybe there's something I'm missing here, since I only have HH Books 1-4.

Officially only models with rules for 40k can be used in 40k, but some hobby stores (such as my LGWS) allow such things as having a detachment of 30k. It's terribly op, my Khorne berzerkers can't hope to stand up to the cheese of 30k WEs.

As someone who has played over 10 games (and lost most of them) with a WE HH list:
1. The FAQ outright says you can play 30k armies in 40k games on the grounds you don't use primarchs/LoW.
2. "Terribly OP" and World Eaters are an oxymoron. Khorne berzekers being awful does not make WE Eldar level cheese. I haven't won a game in awhile with my WE and they are not hideously broken by any length.

Yeah, World Eaters legion rules don't seem especially powerful to me. Haven't seen the Ultramarines rules yet, but the only 30k legions to me that ring the OP alarms are Imperial Fists, and maybe Alpha Legion and Iron Hands.

Iron hands have significant drawbacks, IF are completely ridiculous.

Even then playing @ 2000 pts severely limits any legion list, even the mythical "broken" ones.

WE was probably the worst example you can put forward as An "OP" faction, barring EC and DG.

IF, really? They are much like their 40k tactics. Reroll 1's on bolters and Tank Hunters on Heavy Weapons Squads.

What's OP about them?

BS5 with all bolter weapons is better than rerolling 1s, unless mathhammer people can prove me wrong on that., but then you have to also consider Fury of the Legion on tacs squads, and its just viscous.

I never intended to say that 40k IF Chapter Tactics aren't OP either...I never owned a 40k Space Marine codex, so I'm not familiar enough to comment on that.

Oh yeah, BS 5. It's been a while since I played them.

Still, it's with bolters.

Well for 30k IF, its BS 5 for bolters, bolt pistols, heavy bolters, quad bolters, and the bolter portion of combi-weapons, IIRC.

Do 40k IF Chapter Tactics just let you re-roll 1s with boltguns, or is it all weapons that shoot bolts like 30k IF?

That bs5 becomes useless when you roll up with Amy kind of armour, and the very expensive heavy weapons sqauds are very easy to kill and reduce effectiveness quite quickly.

Hh vs 40k is quite one sided in certain match ups, like any other army really.

The problem I have with Tank Hunters on HSS is that its free. Iron Warriors have a nifty special Heavy Support Squad alternative with added rules, as well, but it isnt just handed out for free, and the unit costs a good deal more points than a regular HSS. They should have done the same for IF...given them a HSS w/ Tank Hunters alternative, but for more points.

You can Run them as Command squads with SS and Power axes. Or i think you can run them as vanguard vets without jump packs.

Not necessarily the Strongest OMG Cheese but useable.
