Seriously, there doesn't seem to be any point to it, aside from saying in the thread "exalted!" it's not like other sites, like B&C, where it says persons x,y, and z exalted person a's post, it's just kind of... there. Am I missing something, here?

Most of my exalts come from the fact it's right next to the reply button and the screen on my phone is quite small. Automatically Appended Next Post: Most of my exalts come from the fact it's right next to the reply button and the screen on my phone is quite small.

Just search for this same thread here... There's been more than a few topics on this subject. To regurgitate the answer: its a feature which will be built upon in future, but currently it serves to rate threads, aside from the number of posts in them. There's a listing of top threads by exalts somewhere abouts. =P

Once a year, there's a big forum post with Top 3 lists posted by legoburner. There's a Top 3 Exalted Posts list, showing the three forum members with the highest amount of exalted posts.

Exalting ranks threads for the 'Top Threads' list under 'Thread Tools' on the menu at the top of the page.
It is also used to populate the blog roll.
The number of exalts aren't displayed in order to prevent it from turning into a popularity contest. We want threads to be exalted because they're awesome, not because someone wants to reach an arbitrary Exalt count.

I find it a useful way of "bookmarking" interesting threads/posts for myself - eg an old but interesting tutorial - which I would otherwise lose amongst my subscribed threads. It also thereby prevents threadomancy whilsg drawing the attention of other users (eg dakka Friends) to topics of particular interest or merit.

What are the future plans for it then, if it is something to be built upon?

Oh, feck. For the last year I thought I'd been exalting individual's comments. Yet the exalt button is there on each individual post -how confusing.

Yes, you can exalt the thread, using the big button beside 'Post Reply' or you can exalt an individual post with the 'Exalt This Post +1' tag at the bottom of each post.
