Best value.. probably the Tumbling Dice "Wings of War" series, £10 for the rules and enough models to make a start, though you will need your own bases.
Simple game but not bad, Bag the Hun is not that far behind, probably under £30 for the rules and enough aircraft to keep you busy for a while, assuming you already have a hex mat that is.
Flames of War is pretty cheap to play, but the addition grows

If you already have a bunch of fantasy minis (from a Bones Kickstarter, for example), then Song of Blades and Heroes is a fantastic option. All the rules are available in PDF format, and you can use minis you already have.

Battletech: a good starter box is out there.
I would second, Bolt Action, X-wing, Full Thrust and Batman.
Star Wars Armada, jury is still out, house ruled a few things but works well enough.
Necromunda, not for everyone, read the rules, see if they suit.
I have all the original box sets so should not complain.
Good luck!

I've got all the Mordheim stuff, but where can you pick up Necromunda rules from these days?
I had all that stuff years ago, but sold it or gave it away

Good to know that myself and hundreds of others have been 'missing the point so hard it's not even funny' for so long. I enjoy playing 40k with all kinds of models, GW ones when a) I like them and b) I find the price acceptable and other manufacturer's if one or both of those aren't true.
You're still missing the point. You play with the models you like because you like them. You don't rub your hands together with glee over how you beat GW's "system". Some people will literally buy the rules and play the game using random flea market toys. Meanwhile a million other companies are sending their shills all over the internet to advertise their games as an "alternative" to GW, as if GW is like petroleum and we're all forced to buy it.
If you are not a moderator, NEVER tell other users how to write their posts. It is always your choice whether or not to take offense at a comment.
I enjoy using all kind of non GW stuff for my 40K army so what is your point? It's my party and i cry if i want to, cry if i want to.
Anyone is allowed to fill in the way they use their armies as they see fit, and as there are no more official tournaments, the restrictions are lifted anyway.

Yaktribe has the latest Community edition (in fact, they're the one making it). You can also find all the old scenarios and articles from GW publications in their Vault, as well as an online roster builder and campaign manager which is invaluable.

In a similar vein Pulp Alley and fist Full of Kung Fu let you use 50's type detectives or gangsters and moderns or sci fi models respectively.

Historicals, with the vast selection of rule sets and community support that's available.
Build a Napoleonic British army for example, and you can get a crazy amount of milage out of it.

I completely agree with this.
I wish that it was possible with Fantasy, but the lack of a objective canon for many of the possible forces tends to create too broad a possible domain for miniature appearance.
When you look at a British Grenadier, you have very specific appearance for a given time-place.

destrucifier wrote:People don't really play 40K because they like wargames. 40K barely even qualifies as a wargame. Yes, the writers use terms like "shooting" and "assault" to describe the abstract mechanisms by which a player loses models. But it doesn't represent military strategy or the event of battle in any meaningful capacity. It's more like a weird geometric sport.
People buy GW stuff because they like GW stuff. So there isn't a point in looking for an alternative. If you want to own citadel's models, you pony up and pay the price. You do this because you want the models because you think they're cool. If you like some other company's models better, you go buy those instead.
There are people who buy non-citadel minis and use them to play GW games, but those people are missing the point so hard that it's not even funny. Even GW's fans aren't in love with their rules. It would make more sense to buy Citadel models and use them to play a completely unrelated game. Maybe one that moves a little bit faster and isn't so reliant on arbitrary faction-specific special rules.
If GW's rules were great, lots of people would play their games with proxies. They don't. But many people play the games as an excuse to show off their models, more or less.
I can't even comprehend this view point, it is so incredibly foreign to me. I really don't know what else to say.

Well, that was just an example. If we instead say you get an ancient or medieval army*, then you'll have models to use in a host of different historical games as well as fantasy settings, because at least humans are always humans.
*Though personally I'd have no problem facing a Napoleonic army in a fantasy game, as long as the rules have good support for ranged combat.

Depends upon the settling, I suppose.
The earlier "Steampunk" periods would seem fitting for Napoleonics.

The guys at my local club / indie store are playing Soldiers of God, which looks fun. It was a natural progression for them as most of them had collected armies for The Crescent & The Cross. Seems to be going down well.
I've just got into Dead Man's Hand and that's fun. Two gangs and the rulebook for £60

Live your life that the fear of death can never enter your heart. Trouble no one about his religion. Respect others in their views and demand that they respect yours. Love your life, perfect your life. Beautify all things in your life. Seek to make your life long and of service to your people. When your time comes to die, be not like those whose hearts are filled with fear of death, so that when their time comes they weep and pray for a little more time to live their lives over again in a different way. Sing your death song, and die like a hero going home.
