I have been trying to come up with a complete list of Factions/Armies for Middle-earth.

Good Guys

• Noldorim
- Fëanor - Nevrast & Dor-Lómin - only first two battles of the Noldor in Beleriand

- Fingolfin and Fingon - Hithlum - in Hithlum and Barad Eithel from 1 - 456 First Age
- Turgon - in Vinyamar in Nevrast (1 - 126 First Age), and Gondolin (112 - 510 First Age)

• Nandorim (Green elves of Ossiriand) - from 0 - 510 First Age

• Dwarves
- Longbeards (Durin's kin) at Khazad-Dûm - from 0 First Age - 1981 Third Age

And, there are also minor kingdoms and realms, such as Darwinian, which are mentioned in passing in either The Hobbit or The Lord of the Rings.

But. . . . .

Am I missing anyone???

An impressive bit of work putting this all together. What are your plans to do with it? Small forces (a unit or two) from each for display?

Most of them, nothing, myself.

Some of them would really only be small units (The Halethim of Brethil, for instance, could not manage more than a small unit at the Nirnaeth. Whether they could have prior to the Dagor Bragollach is a different story, and one which is up in the air), and would be more for Skirmish encounters (The Men of Brethil fought off Orc raids attempting to find a way into Doriath).

So, for most of them, they are only a study in population.

Eventually, though, if the First Age is expanded to a 2,000 - 3,000 year History, as Tolkien noted it should be in the notes for the Athrabeth Finrod ah Andreth and the essay On Orcs, then the Edain would get their own army for about 300 years, prior to the Nirnaeth (which would then take place roughly around 1772, or 2772, rather than 472 First Age).

But for other forces, I have plans to create Armies for Mass Combat, and then a few smaller forces for small-unit/skirmish games. Doriath is a good example, which was used prior to the arrival of the Noldor twice, and then again late in the First Age, but which primarily fought in small scale actions on the fences of Doriath, using very different warriors than were used in the armies. Gondor would be another (The Army itself did not make use of the "Rangers" in formations for Mass Combat)

Only a few of the armies have figures available for them, though, and then mostly just Third Age, War of the Ring armies.

But, currently, I have figures for A couple of the First Age and most of the Third Age forces.

And, I am working on sorting out what would be IN these different forces.

It would be really interesting to see perhaps even one figure built and painted to represent each of those forces. A "typical" warrior, essentially. Using the variety of metal and plastic kits out there, and even your 3d sculpting and printing, as well as your knowledge and ability to extrapolate uniforms and likely colours chosen. I can see how whole units could be problematic, but single models would be far more achievable, though it would still be a huge project.

It would certainly be a one-of-a-kind set of models that you could proudly display on the internet, and perhaps even consult with your contacts at the Estate. It certainly couldn't hurt your reputation with them.

In that event, that is one of the plans.

I would like to be able to do at least 3D character studies for the different factions.

At present, I am trapped by a monster of a doctor, who is preventing much work from being done (I am looking into how much it will cost to have the Goblins I have done printed - turns out I am just going to do the chainmail on the five or six of them with chainmail by hand). But I am able to do some drawing (which is frustratingly slow) to get some ideas. I need to scan and post some of them that are already done (The Mahûd - which would really just be Far-Haradrim. I am trying to do three separate factions, as they are supposed to be Tribal South Saharan African sorts). And... agonizing over the First Age is driving me nuts. Trying to get enough variation in the FA Dwarves (Firebeards and Broadbeams), Easterlings (Bors and Ulfang), and Edain (Beorings, Haladim, and Halathim) is nerve wracking.

The Easterlings are just Norse (Bors) and Rus/Jomsviking (Ulfang). The Edain are a cross between Saxon and Frank, pre-migration.... But the Dwarves..... What the HELL do I use as a model for odd-man-out Dwarves?
