Please dont bash me if this is already asked, but Im having issues with Tamiya Primer. I never painted anything larger than a Space Marines before and now I am in peril with my whirlwind. Previously I painted my marines using cheap car spray and aplying mister hobby paint and had no problems. But now I decide to buy me a real primer and citadel paint, and apply it on the whirlwind (it has a rhino hull so I will talk about this as a rhino from now on). I primed with tamiya and then made 2 basecoats using citadel paint - Maccrage blue. It's all nice, but before I prepare for a silver drybrush efect on the edges of the rhino I saw that the blue is gone and it's all white. I proceed with drybrush but then another places started to lose not only paint but Primer surface as well... I see edges where I can see the original gray color of the plastic :( :( Please advise what to do or what I am doing wrong.

A photo of the issue might help. Did you wash the plastic before assembling? Possibly some release agent left?

I never used Tamiya primer, so I dont know if this is specific to that.

I washed the marines, but I completely forget to wash the Rhino :(

theory 1: its the primer. wash some spare plastic (sprue perhaps). prime it, and paint it. if it goes wrong its the primer. throw it away.

theory 2: lack of washing.

either way. it sounds like you will have to strip your model and start again.

Could it be that Tamiya primer and citadel paint not bonding well toghether?

I got one tip for you just grab a can of the chaos black primer and you will never go wrong primer doesn't really matter its the paint that does.and also use simple green to strip everything works wonders and wont damage your models.

Im too far into the proces to strip. I applied wash and silver drybrush. It's actually the edges that are losing paint but I dont have pictures to show you :( I think I will try to cover them with paint and hope it will stick.

True, but if the paint wont stay then whats the point of keeping it like that?

Okay there's a couple things that could be the cause.
Not washing the plastic.
Not shaking the primer enough (really do it for as long as it says on the can).
Not giving the primer time to "cure" - some primers need time to harden and will not take paint properly before they have. When in doubt, give it 8-12hrs (sucks I know).
Wizard's curse.

What can you do now? Give it a day to dry all over and then use those areas to your advantage. Paint it as battle damage and scraped areas! Have a search on Dakka tutorials for how to do this. You only need a hand full of paint colours to achieve it.

Also, don't touch the hard edges of models with your fingers Paint/primer will come off.
