It's actually quite powerful, especially since nobody really designs their armies to deal with a hundred model unit.
I wouldn't consider it fun to play, though. All you'll get to do is roll dice. Not much room for tactics.

Hmmm... So I did some researching and watched tons of ork video battle reports and I feel very secure in deciding to play orks.
So from what I can see I feel like I am going to be needing a few specific pieces that are versatile for sure.
So I am thinking that the following will be great to pick up as they have a good place in most ork armies
(these are what I dont have)
3 mek boyz
1 big mek
1 painboy (should I get 2?)
Just more boyz in general.
Some battle wagons. Thinking around 3 tops.
1 ork flyer jet.
5 deff koptas.
20 gretchin. I really want some of these guys because they seem awesome for holding objectives in the back + the hilarity of them actually killing something.
So what other units do you guys generally consider to be solid and versatile choices for the orks?
Opinions on killa kanz and deff dreads?
I also figure I can roll with reduced models by focusing on upgrading the guys I do have with small bits like boss poles. My local nerd shop is also fine with me doing small level proxying like just saying specific groups of orks are ard boyz which means those guys are a little beefier and increasing my point limit so I wont need to get tons more units.

Great! Now we can get down to business.
What sort of theme would you prefer:
-Da red wunz go fasta! Take nothing but the fastest kit. Getting from one side of the board to the other should not take more than one turn. This involves bikerz, dakkajetz, and wagonz.
-Green Tide! The aim of the game is to get as many ladz onto the field as possible. It's the Sir Spammalot of armies.
-Da Mek'z gon' cray cray! Use lots of wierd and wacky tech, including Stompaz, and Killa Kanz.
-We'z noice and balunced! A variety of things, tailored to preference, kitted to taste.

It is one of the best current strategies available for orks, especially since wave serpant ignores cover s7 spam is out of the picture this green tide would be my core every game if I started playing orks.
Simply because it gives you a ton of boots on the ground and board control early. It could be a bit overwhelming initally due to the complexity of multi charging with that many models but you'll get the hang of it.
The second thing I would want are some heavy hitters which is why I like the bully boys formation, gives them extra ws which can make a difference in combat.
This is why is suggested the BOA list from blood of kittens network(just google them, their website is a super good resource for current competitive GT level lists) if you want comeptitive orks. If you want fun, well just bash together any list that has models and tactics you enjoy. Automatically Appended Next Post: The major downside to green tide I have seen is because it is only one unit it can technically only hold one objective. Other than that it's pretty great having a painboy buff all those boys.

Considering my army is a combination of color schemes (ebay bought) I will opt to avoid specific themes related to specific clans so no speed freaks or evil sunz for me.
Yeah I am thinking green tide as a top contender and I am not too far away from having the models, but still a bit confused on how it works on the table top in a standard game. The apoc version is one giant mega blob of boyz which I get. Seems like it would be hard to win via objectives though unless you can split off boyz. Also how would the charging and piling in work? I have watched the game played and watched "beginner video" guides which handled such questions, but not for huge swarms of boyz there has to be a limit to how many attacks the green tide can get in because 20 ork boyz with 4 attacks each alone is 80 dice rolls. Also how does shooting work in such a formation? If I get charged am i getting every ork boy within 12" inches firing on overwatch? Thats a lot of Dakka!
I would like to such a list relying on wacky stuff and mechanics, but for now I am going to side line it.
The balanced one I dig, but I would like my army to have a gimmick ya know? Something that makes it more interesting to play, but yeah a balanced army is something I want for sure.

Boyz come in mobs of 10-30, if you read the codex. I don't have the codex myself, but it should detail how to put an army together. Word-by-word reading will solve most of it.
But a GT is not just one big mob. It's a theme, whereby you take lots of units of Orkses. Preferably having each unit led by a Nob with Power Klaw. Automatically Appended Next Post: As for wacky tech, read the unit fluff in the codex, it'll detail some of the funnier stuff, and then you can pick and choose.

Alright so my collection continues to grow.
A few more questions
Formations and detachments. So these are straight bonuses you can get by qualifying for them of them by having your army list comprise the required units correct?
So if for instance I go Green tide formation then I claim that. You also only get one formation correct?
And my warboss can have multiple upgrades to make him rite gud at da killy correct? For instance I could kit him out with a boss pole and cybork body on top of giving him a lucky stick relic and slap him in mega armor for re rolls on his 2+ armor and if that fails he has a FNP?
I dont have the rule book just yet and didnt find any answers to this question: Do you get multiple saves associated with mitigating hits or only the highest? Say you are a SM in cover. Ork shoota boy hits you. You have a 3+ armor save. If that fails do you get your cover save of lets say 5+ after that?

When it comes to model upgrades, there are written restrictions but you typically can take as many upgrades as you want. Cybork, Mega Armour, Bosspole and Lucky Stick sounds god to me Formations give you bonuses, but you must take exactly what they ask of you, no more, no less. To take anything else, you'll need an additional detachment. No. You only get the single best save. Example: -Space Marine in cover with an Iron Halo -Has a 3+ Armour, a 5+ Cover and a 4+ Invulnerable save -When wounded, he'll roll 1D6, and on a 3+ will not take a wound -If that wound negated his Armour save (such as from an Ap 3 weapon), he'll use the Invulnerable save, and will only succeed on a 4+.

But FNP is a save that bypasses this right? Think I saw some SM batreps where they failed their armor and then took a FNP

FNP is separate from an armour or an invul save. It can be taken if your first save fails if that model has the special rule.

Welcome to Dakka Dakka, and while I can't say to much about the Orks (my collection of Paper Proxies don't extend that far yet) from what I've heard and watched they seem like a great and fun army, not competitive, but that's pretty much everything that was released before Crons. There are three lists that I have heard are good.
-Green Tide, which everyone has been talking about already on here, is nice because it is good both mechanically and in the fluff.
-The walker legion list. I heard it was good, but I also heard that Ork walkers aren't good anymore, so I can't say for sure. If you like Killa Kans though this is for you.
-Blitz Brigade, which is battlewagons everywhere, usually carrying Boyz and Meganobz.
Other than that I've heard good things said about Mek Gunz, Defrkoptas, Lootas, Tankbustas, and Stormboyz.

Alright thank you all very much for your help so far! I have done a lot of shopping to beef up my army and still looking for more models to round it out, but right now I am sitting at
Books:
7th codex
4th (got it cheap for 6 so what not? Fun to read)
Rule book 7th edition.
Specials:
Ghazy
Warboss
Mekboy x 2
Painboy
Grots: 30 (2 Runtherds for them)
Sluggas: 71
Shootas: 76
Burna boyz: 12
Nobs: 13
Vehicles:
Killa Kan: 2
Trukks: 3
With various war gear available for the nobs such as poles and PKs.
Note: All of these models are painted to a good-high standard are all assembled. Not a single unbased or grey model among them (Vehicles included).
This has cost me right around $520 for the lot of them.
I think this is a pretty good price all things considered. What do you guys think?
I am pretty sure green tide type playing styles is what I am heading towards. xD.
Also I am interested in collecting and playing orks for the long haul so key unit sections I am missing right now dont bother me too much, I will fill them in when I see some good deals.

Alright I have constructed my first army list and I am sure that anyone looking can tell its pretty bad so some feedback on how to change it would be great.
This fits into the Ork Detachment with the boss of da WAAAGH and the Greenskin horde rules. Its the only detachment I found in the entire 7th edition ork codex which confused me because are there not more? Same goes for formations. DIdnt see any of those.
Warboss - 135pts - Mega armour, twin shoota, power klaw, bosspole, cybork body, da lucky stikk
Painboy - 50pts
Gretchin - 12 + 1 Runtherd - 41pts
Gretchin - 12 + 1 Runtherd - 41pts
Gretchin - 12 + 1 Runtherd - 41pts
(The following are 19 boyz and 1 nob per squad)
Boyz - 20 - 154pts - Shootas - Bosspole
Boyz - 20 - 154pts - Shootas - Bosspole
Boyz - 20 - 135pts - Bosspole
Boyz - 20 - 135pts - Bosspole
Boyz - 20 - 135pts - Bosspole
Boyz - 20 - 135pts - Bosspole
Nobs squad 9 - Eavy armor - 198pts
Trukk - 30pts (reinforced ram +5)
Dakkajet - 110pts
Total - 1499
Note: Warboss and his 9 nob 1 painboy guard are in the trukk as a dedicated transport to start.
I know its lacking some good stuff and that is combination of my zero experience playing or building armies and having limited unit choices.
Things I DONT have atm, but can look to buy should you guys suggest I get one:
All unique ork characters othan than Ghazy which I do have.
Dakkajets
Warbikes
Lootas
Any vehicle that is not a killa kan, trukk or 1 deff dread.
Big mek
