" Space Wolves army! "

Space Wolves have TWC, but other than that, aren't super duper better than BA. Xenos will never assault you, so counter attack is useless. They will just shoot you like a chump.

Hey All, I'm the friend that he played against! I just wanted to chime in and say that overall, the list wasn't terrible. Largely he ran into trouble by infiltrating at the start while I had first turn. The other main problem was luck for sure. I definitely had all of it that game. He wasn't landing anything he needed, including failing charges multiple times, and I was scoring tons of kills that anyone would have considered lucky.

The purpose of our lists was basically because we both wanted to field our Super Heavy vehicles for the first time, but in the end, the Obelisk didn't really perform that well (kind of expected). It definitely didn't recoup it's 300 points, but did 4 wounds to the Jump infantry to finish that squad, finished his Sicaran's last HP and did 1 HP to Dante. I love the model, but I'm probably not going to field the obelisk unless i run the full 2 monolith formation for shenanigans. The Tesseract Vault might be used at some point, but it's so expensive that I'm not sure i'll be doing that any time soon.

On top of that, my turn one shooting took out 3 models from his deathstar AND did 2 wounds to Dante, which was really big because of their 2+/5+ FNP. I was able to hold them in combat later solely with my destroyer lord because of their lack of attacks by the time we were in combat.

In the end, I think it came down to an unfortunate turn 1 for him and some solid luck on my rolls. We may have a rematch with some slight differences in our lists to see how it plays out without such a disparity on luck.

It takes tremendous luck for BA player to hang in against Necrons. The two codices aren't even on the same planet.

" lot more flyers and Drop Pods to my army"

I don't think these things make BA any better. Drop pod fragnoughts, yes. But dropping actual BA? It turns off our chapter tactic.

Yeah, I was afraid that was going to happen as soon as I saw Destroyer Cult on the list of possible he might bring.
If I know I'm going to be facing MEQ, survivability be dammed, I load up on the murder bots. Have a feeling most 'Cron players would be the same... though, the fact that he was using it AND a Tesseract Vault is a little surprising.

BA can't put enough wounds on Necrons at range to compete. That's the bottom line. Not enough of our units are going to make it to assault to make up the difference. Assault is a joke in 7th.

To your SWs point; they have access to flyers that are, arguably, equal, if not superior, to our own, as Dedicated Transports for their squads. They also have Dreadnoughts with Invulnerable saves, which gives them more than enough survivability to actually survive long enough to get into close combat, which pretty much negates our advantage of sheer number of attacks. Thunderwolf Cavalry are absolute monsters, and, again, actually have the survivabilty to get into combat. I think that is really our disadvantage; we're an army of T4 infantry or Rear AV10 Walkers, who are reliant on making it into combat to make use of any of our strengths, in an edition that makes in nearly impossible for units with those defensive stats (who lack significant speed bonuses) to actually do that.

I have to say, I played my Raven Guard army for the first time yesterday, and was surprised at how much more effective they were, just because of the double jump pack use, than my Blood Angels, even playing a similarly constructed list.

The Drop Pods are so that I can run a Skyhammer Annihilation force as allies, and at least get the ability to assault out of Deppstrike that I crave, one way or another!!!

Yeah, there's no reason to play BA over vanilla at this point. None.

I still think Xenos are still just gonna shoot the SW into ineffectiveness except for the TWC. They're better, but vanilla is so much better than that.

I was pretty worried about the Destroyer Cult myself, but I, admittedly, didn't do my homework, and assumed that they would be a lot easier to kill than they really are.

Oh, and it was an Obelisk, not a Tesseract Vault, which was my mistake; all Necron models look more or less the same to me! He only brought it because I mentioned having a Knight, which he seemed pretty worried about, but the Knight ended up missing with all but one of its attacks with its blast weapons, and the single hit it landed with the Ironstorm Missile Pod only killed a single model, so I don't think he'll be that worried about it in the future!

This. We can't shoot them enough to get close, and that's what we need to do to beat them. Having just started playing about a year and a half ago, with a strong preference for assault, I'm really disappointed with how weak it is in the current ruleset. I realize that it is unrealistic to expect that charging a group of futuristic soldiers, while swinging a giant chainsaw, will somehow be effective, but that's how I want to play, DAMNIT!!!

Assault dominated 3rd ed. But the pendulum has swung too much in the other direction now.
