So playing a local game last week resulted in a rule dispute a few times over cover saves. I had one of my Leman Russ tanks behind a squad of 30 guardsman and my opponent stated I get no cover save as he landed 2 penetrating hits and one glancing. I'm not sure I'm doing this right, for its how I'm use to playing but I don't wanna cheat. I figured if I put a baneblade behind a squad of guardsman it would get no cover since it is a super heavy but I figure the little tanks would be ok. Please let me know what you guys think. Vehicles get cover saves based on how much is obscured. 25% grants a 5+ cover save.

Though some terrain may modify that. If you you're 25% obscured from an imperial statuary for example, you would gain a 3+, and then there is stealth and shrouded and what have you.

Not for vehicles. Not by default. There must be 25% obscurement.

I see. Makes much more sense then. So would a squad of chaps fully surrounding a tank that's in a crater slightly lowering it, only the turret pops out, be considered 25% or more? I had that argument just recently and I let him have it but I thought that it should have counted. Thank you

3 in front of a Land Raider? Naw, there'd have to be more obstruction, like the whole side with infantry standing there.

Ok, this is clearing up a lot of dispute. So I was correct in assuming a full squad of infantry or terminators surrounding a normal vehicle, not a land raider or bigger, it would count it as 25%+ obstruction? I had a full squad of combined guardsman around a russ about 20+ guys as it was backed into a crevice/crater.

In this case I'd argue the number of equal height guys is irrelevant since the space between any 2 models of the same unit also grants cover.

In other words, gaps between models of the same unit do not negate a cover save. How tall are guardsmen compared to a LRuss?

A Leman Russ with sponsons is about 5 Guardsman base-to-base wide, the Body is about 2 Guardsman High, and another 1 or so horizontally would pretty well obscure the turret area. Giving you about an area of approximately 12 Guardsman for the front of the tank. (I didn't measure side areas) So head on, if there are about 3 guardsman in front of the tank, it is roughly 25% obscured.

Remember to go down to eye level of the shooter and take a look. Getting 25% coverage is really not that hard.

And if you really thought that he got the save and your opponent didn't you guys should rolloff on it.

As long as the model is 25% obscured you get the save.

As long as your arc being fired on is obscured by at least 25%, you have a cover save. Certain cover saves are allowed based on the terrain you are hiding in/behind as long as you follow these rules for vehicles and cover saves.

Now you can measure from any part of the model's body (eyes, arms, tummy, legs). If you have a really tall model, you can circunvene short models in the way.
