Looking at the dark vengeance set for my son and I as a
Starter kit for the both of us my son wants to build a da starter army and chaos is fine for me to start (I'm not picky) how ever the da kit lacks a dreadnaught this is a deal breaker for my son here is where my question comes in to add a dread to the da force can we just buy the dread or di also have to now buy codex da and to make that codex work do I also have to codex sm and the full rules set

Question#1 can we just add a dread to that force with the short rules provided in dv?
#2 if not which books do we need to make that dread happen for the da force?
Thanks in advance for help AND time
I suspect I need to buy the following dv, codex sm, codex da, full rules, dreadnaught kit,
Please say I can just buy dv, dread kit and be good
Or please say just dv, codex da, dread kit

You mean in a chaos army if you want an aerial unit with bs of 4 at minimum all you need is 200 free points and 220 dollars American.
( IA XIII + fire raptor) yeah that seems fair

1. I think the rules for units now come with the instructions on how to build then. But I'm not sure 100 percent on this.

2. Just either the DA or the SM codex. Possibly.

Dreads are intuitive enough for an adult to assemble w/o instructions, but you will need the Dark Angels codex, and you will NOT need the Space Marine Codex.

Thank you sir do I need to buy the full rules also or will the rules supplied in dv suffice

I mean that generally either codex has the rules for dreads. If you are dead set on playing DA as DA just pick up the Codex

You won't need the large rulebook as most people I met prefer the smaller one from DV

You will need the Dark Angel codex to use the dread.

You will also need a codex as well for your Chaos Space Marines either Codex Chaos Space Marines or you could go with Khorne Daemonkin and use your Chosen as normal Space marines or Possessed.

If you are picking up codexs off ebay make sure you get the latest one, you can compare the cover with whats on GW's site to work out which one you need.

The rules supplied in Dark Vengeance, specifically the softback mini rulebook, are perfectly fine as far as rules go.

Like others have said. you will need to buy two additional books: the Chaos Space Marines codex and the Dark Angels codex. Not only will these books give you the complete rundown on the army of your choice, but will also give you ideas about how to expand your army to higher points levels.

As an additional step, I would scour the internet for various tactics articles about all the different factions. The 1d4chan wiki has great tactics pages on all the factions in the game, and is at the moment completely up-to-date. Just don't let your 8 year old look on those pages, and don't believe what the Chaos Space Marines page tells you; the advice it gives is terrible.

Hey I have some extra stuff like the chaos book and some minis(should have a dread). Let me know if you might be interested in them(for free).

My dad and I started playing when I was a kid 16 years ago and so if someone will use them I would rather they go to a good home.

The dread is a bit high, I would cancel if you can. Should be able to get it cheaper than that.

DV is solid, however I would double check to make sure it is the current one, not the old one. The old one will have the old rules in it. Codex DA is solid price, same with those marines.

You can use the helbrute stats for a dark angel dread (just doesnt have that berzerk rule) if you give it a multimelta or assault cannon the rules for them are in the dark vengeance starter

You've forgot one side of the hobby: painting and modeling

I would get Army Painter paints if i were you, they're good value for money. Like GW paints in a different bottle, and a little less smooth if you dont thin your paints right.

As for brushes, I would also go Army Painter. If you keep them in good condition they can last long and do a pretty good job.

Tools, you could use cutters from a department store. Pretty cheap and do the same job. Use any glue GW or Army Painter does i beleive they're pretty good brands. After this nothing is really essential, except from a primer. I use GW chaos black, my friend used Army Painter spray once and it didn't dry right. A model drill from GW would be good to drill barrels, and a mould line remover from GW would be good. As for a hobby knife, I'll leave that to the other people. I dont use a knife, but it's sometimes good to have one

I have a dremel and a ridiculous number of bits I was going to use citadel paints but they are pricey I will def look at the army painter paints 25 yrs ago i had a battalion of battlemechs so I've done some mini modeling before
Back then I used a acrylic paints thinned out with alcohol that way if I wasn't happy I could just wash it off by running straight alcohol thru the airbrush Washing the mini with airbrush dry it off then try again once I was happy matte finish clear coat to lock it down
Im hoping a similar strategy will work here

You are off to a great start! So how is your 8 year old taking to it? My son is 7 so I was wondering if mine is old enough yet to have a good grasp on the game yet...

I use a couple of things to strip paint off old models: either a diluted bath of Simple Green overnight (no exact method, I just pour some tap water in with the cleaner into a tub and let the models soak) and a toothbrush gets most of it off. It doesn't damage plastic, and it seems pretty safe for resin as well. I've heard simple DOT 3 brake fluid works as well, though I haven't tried it myself.

Awesome actually he got stared out with the unit types and game concepts by playing first the horus heresy game drop assault and the space wolves game it was all part of my master plan to get him off the tablet and off the wii you for a while he's actually really good at assembling and cutting the models I was impressed I just need to Re-sand some stuff for him and I assist with the actual aplication of glue he has a birthday next weekend (turning 8) and I'm about to be massively out-gunned he got all red and flustered at the end of our first match I asked him why he was upset he just molly wopped me he said yeah but I really wanted my warmaster to kill you with his sword though I knew then he was sold
